This is the first good news this year... :)

When I first read this, I was like, uh, okay, please do this right... but it's Zahn, so the chance of it being not good is < 1%, I'd say!

I heard a rumor this is happening because George told Dave Filoni to learn about art.

Even though I have only read 2 books that feature Thrawn I am still super excited to have him back.

Well, he definitely still uses Rukh in The Last Command to intimidate Ferrier and for other odd jobs without question, if I remember correctly.

But yeah, Zahn actually does a pretty good job setting up Thrawn's blind spots and hubris in The Thrawn Trilogy. Dark Force Rising is a probably the starkest example of this; in relation to the Noghri, he draws the wrong conclusion at literally every step of the way, basically because it's clear he has little or no respect for the Noghri's culture, their intelligence, and their competency to deceive him or oppose him in any real way. They're tools, slaves, primitives, and on some basic level beneath his notice.

In retrospect, Outbound Flight actually makes Thrawn's whole arc a little better, and a lot sadder. The guy who started his career rescuing slaves ends it as basically a slavemaster. The guy who was the "alien" in Imperial society gets killed because of his contemptous treatment of aliens. It's quite well done, actually.

    They're already recanonized.

"It's quite well done"? Really? In a thread ... about Thrawn ... and in a post about the artistry in his life arc and particularly its ending ... you're going to say "It's quite well done"? [face_waiting]

    But was it *artistically* done?

Do we know whether Noghri have art? If so, it's possibly not very good art and Thrawn could never stand to look at it.

If done really quite well or noticeably better than just quite well, this would demonstrate that for all his delusions of superiority over Palpatine and Vader, the dark side climate cultivated by them ends up corrupting everyone, thus making the Sith so much more than just a simple set of military dictators. Something Thrawn, for all his military genius, could never achieve.

I don't know if this has been mentioned but a Q&A was done with Timothy Zahn about the book

Zahn said that it will span from when Thrawn became familiar with the Empire, to BEFORE the appearance in rebels. So obviously it will be some sort of an origin story I guess, and not taking place after rebels.

Even better, thanks to Darth Maul's precedentl we could easily have a Grievous Reborn vs. NEU-Thrawn fight in the OT era. :p

Cool. Those designers have other Star Wars book covers that are really good. Some of them weren't used it seems.

It's weird how...shiny?...he looks, but I like that he's a little more overtly alien now.

Looks like the rank plaque's wrong. Wouldn't be the first time - Daala's was wrong on the Jedi Search cover compared to its description in the text.

Hmm, there's something off to me. Always got the sense Thrawn was tall, but not as broad as he's depicted here.

I'm also suspecting there'll be a large explosion of outrage over his story here and in Rebels S3.

Well, I already decided he is Thrawn, but not my Thrawn. More like his doppleganger from Csilla-2.

I think an alternate title for the Hand of Thrawn duology could be: A Game of Thrawns. :D
