Did Grand Admiral Thrawn really purchase Grievous' head/mask to add to his art collection? Or is this just wishful thinking?

It's mentioned in "The Story of General Grievous: Lord of War" that his mask was recovered and later purchased by a high ranking Imperial officer, but nothing further is known.

It was, however, Abel's intent for the officer to be Thrawn, the idea originating in a discussion here and a drawing RF did.

Sounds cool to me. I wonder what insights Thrawn managed to get from analysing Grievous' mask?

I thought the thread title meant something very different, in which case I was going to say, "Yes, in terms of military ability, Thrawn owned Grievous."

Thrawn owning Grievous' mask, however, makes a lot of sense. If Grievous was the tactical genius we're supposed to, for some reason, believe he is, then it stands to reason Thrawn would admire him.

It's a little more pointed towards Thrawn, since it calls him an admiral and mentions him purchasing it "as a Kaleesh work of art".

That's a neat little story point! Makes sense too, Thrawn probably would have admired Grievous' battle abilities.

Would it really be considered "Kaleesh" art? I mean, doesn't it actually resemble what a Kaleesh looks like? Also, seeing as how it was made when Grievous was just about dead by the IBC it would seem to be more of an example of Muun art?

If it were kept around as a token of respect for his tactical genius a la an officer from the U.S. Armed Forces keeping say....Robert E. Lee's saber around it could make sense. My question is, do you think Thrawn even really respected any other strategist or did he have such a high opinion of himself that GG was just another General that lost a war?

Thrawn probably had a high opinion of himself because he learned from the generals who lost wars so as not to repeat their mistakes.

It's either modeled directly after, or is in fact the actual mask Grievous wore before he became a cyborg. It may resemble an actual Kaleesh face (haven't seen a good enough picture of the new action figure to be sure) but it's still Kaleesh art.

Wasn't there a source somewhere that pointed towards it being of Krath origin?

IIRC, Grievous cyborg mask is modeled after the one he was using before his "demise" anyway. It's something of a traditional Kaleesh mask marking him as member of some kind of warrior elite.

Grievous' mask is actually more similar to his real face structure than that of his old mask though...

I think Grievous' overall body shape was similar to the Krath, but the design of the face mask was Kaleesh.

Yeah, it was the cyborg body that had Krath-inspired elements. The mask is Kaleesh, although perhaps not terribly abstract.

His facepiece in the cyborged body is not Kaleesh, just inspired by the Kaleesh. It was built by the Muun's that put together his metal frame.

i just thought this was another case of a fan using Wookie to expand on characters or somthing.

but on a related note: why do some writers feel the need to fill in holes that don't seem to exist? every character doesn't need to be linked to each other

Because this was cool. It's not really a character link.

And it only makes sense that Thrawn, as a master strategist, would be interested in the military leaders of the recent past, and Grievous was one of the most notorious.

    I thought Obi-Wan owned Grievous.
