Is there a way to burn a video onto a cd that you can play on a DVD player without using a DVD burner?

Yes, if you have VCD capability on your DVD player.

You convert the movie into a certain type of file that your CD Burner can put into VCD format and there you go.
I know EZCDCreator premium can do it.
I haven't done it. I just have the basic version that came with my burner.

it just has to be in a certain format. I am not positive on the details, but it has to be in AVI format or somwhat.

You can do a search on the net for programs that will convert one type to the other.

I wish my video card would take input from my VCR. I would burn my home movies onto VCD. But I just haven't decided to spend the money on the video card. I don't know enough about them yet.

here's a link to a page about them...
    this is the link

    this one looks better

You might also want to try here, VB. They cover just about any scenario.

Yep, you can even get the software you need for free from VCDhelp.

Granted though, the quality is going to suck, so don't expect a DVD. But it's free.

I haven't found anything on there that's free. At least, nothing good, lol. I dont' have Nero, my burner doesn't work with DVDs, and the demo just isn't gonna cut it, is it? There's a lot of info on that site, and I understand little. :p All I know is it requires stuff I don't have.

EDIT: I know there have been threads on purchasing VCDs of the Star Wars movies, but I never paid attention then. Are they worth it? I realize the quality isn't DVD level, but even VHS quality I'd be happy with, just so long as I can watch them on my DVD player. I think we all know what movie I was most focused on putting on a VCD, but I can't mention it here. :p

    Might I suggest a new iMac? 8-}

EDIT: I hear ya VB. I'm just lucky to have access to a Mac with a DVD burner, because I'm not sure how much longer my 1995 THXer's were gonna last.

First of all, do you have a capture card to capture the video from the VCR? Also, do you have the necessary disk space (It will be huge if captured uncompressed (best quality) )?

If you answered "yes" to both of those, suggest downloading the following software:

    • dvd2svcd (freeware) - A fairly easy to use proggy capable of converting AVI, DVD, or DVB input to MPEG1 (VCD) or MPEG2 (SVCD). The only piece not included is the video encoder.

    • Next choose an encoder. You can download either of two excellent encoder demo versions (CCE or TMPG) here if you click on "Downloads" on the left hand side and look near the top of the page under "Rippacks".

    • Once you've installed the previous software and figured out how to encode (it's really pretty user friendly, so it shouldn't take you long), dvd2svcd will leave you with image files (.cue, .bin), ready to be burned to CDs. These can be burned by a combo of XDuplicator GUI and the win32 version of CDRDAO, which can be downloaded here. Both are freeware.

I know that this combo works because I use it myself all the time.

Personally, I hate VCDs. They're pretty much VHS quality, and it's not worth the effort to record something then put it on VCD. Animation looks horrid on VCDs too. sVCDs aren't as bad, and if done right can lood pretty good, but I don't have the patience for it.

Also, whenever I encode something to MPEG1 format, I always had a problem with the sound being out of synch.
