No...but Tomb Raider had Angelina Jolie, and Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST) between her and just about every single male in the movie, which is just as good.

Ya, but Deus Ex has JC Denton, which should have the same UST effect for females :p

Found an old press release on the DX Movie:

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Pictures has optioned the rights to develop a science-fiction action-adventure franchise based on the award-winning PC game "Deus Ex," it was announced today by Peter Schlessel, President of Production for Columbia Pictures. The project will be developed and produced by Laura Ziskin, who most recently produced Spider-Man for the studio.

Columbia secured the rights to the title from Eidos Interactive, the successful video gaming company responsible for developing such hit titles as "Tomb Raider." Greg Pruss is currently writing the screenplay.

Like the popular game, the film will be set in the year 2052 as the world confronts the threat of a crippling disease, economic collapse and the threat of global terrorism. JC Denton is a highly-trained, nano-technology enhanced counter-terrorist who is sworn to protect the government. But as he unravels one conspiracy after another, he must decide between continuing to serve the government or overthrowing it.

Corona has a Tomb Raider 2 Script Review

Here you go (Contains some Spoilers, DON'T read if you don't want any spoilers)...

June 26, 2002... They work inside the labrynthine Hollywood movie making machine, and they're here today to present to you the first review for Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life, a.k.a. Tomb Raider 2. We were surprised by their verdict of the screenplay, and they will tell you what they thought of Dean Georgaris' script, its strengths, weaknesses and how it compares to the first film's story in their minor SPOILER-filled review!

"I've read many many scripts over a six year career in Hollywood, most horrible, but Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life by Dean Georgaris (draft date: 10 June 02) is rather impressive, if for no other reason than it contains all of the pieces we've come to expect from the franchise video game. Gone are the clunky, hard-to-swallow 'dramatic' moments that I felt buried the first movie, like Lady Croft desperate to resolve that oh-so-cliched relationship with dear-old-dead-dad. Instead, this puppy focusses on Lara kicking ass and taking names throughout, in a more adventure-oriented quest-type movie that feels closer in tone and action to the video games. The script would feel very much at home on the Playstation -- go to this mysterious place, do this thing, which leads to the next mysterious place, and the mystery deepens. Add pixels and you've got the video game, add Angelina Jolie and you've got the movie.

"I'm going to do my best to be spoiler-free here, but I'll lay out the broad strokes of the plot: Lara's looking for antiquities in a sunken temple, and happens upon a sphere that holds the location of Pandora's Box. Thing is, evil Chen Lo shows up with some thugs and a thrilling, highly visual fight ensues in this air-pocketed temple under water which also just happens to be tilted at a 45 degree angle with thousands of 'damocles-sword-ish' threats from above. It's a fitting opening to the script, and will take your breath away. What follows involves Lara's attempts to get the sphere back from Chen Lo with the help of Terry, an old flame and dangerous snark, before Chen Lo can sell it to Reiss, who's actually the main bad guy of the script. Things get murky here, because the script alludes to Reiss desiring the location of Pandora's Box so he can use it as a biological weapon to destroy the world or hold it hostage -- it's never made clear. His motivations are suspect and rather thin, and there's also a bit about clones that never is explained.

"Indeed, *much* of the script rides solely on the shoulders of the good faith of the reader to roll with the punches -- Chen Lo delays selling the sphere to Reiss to get more money, but when Terry and Lara get to Chen Lo's hideout, the sphere is already on its way to Reiss, even though Reiss hasn't mentioned anything about paying Chen Lo what he believes he's due. There's a script-ending double-cross that makes *no* sense whatsoever; I won't give it away, but then again, I hope it doesn't survive to the production draft. Sometimes it appears as though screenwriters *think* something just should happen, but don't work out exactly *why* it happens. That's frequently the case here.

"All that said, Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life is packed with set piece after set piece, and while motivations and characters are thin, the script makes up for a lot of it through visually arresting fights, chases, and tension. Shanghai streets allow for some Lara-Terry-ninja fighting (hey - it works - whatever), Reiss's lab gives us the stealth mission level that if it were in the video game, we'd just accuse it of being a Metal Gear cop but turns out rather well, and when they do get to the Cradle of Life and Pandora's Box, the threats are reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but with someone holding a gun to Lara's head. It has exactly what we expect, and doesn't get bogged down in exposition. And best of all, she never has to visit a museum to have someone explain to the audience the meaning and purpose of

    Corona's report *Spoilers Warning*

"First of all, the studio people confirmed to us the scene they were shooting in Santorini was the opening scene of the film. It starts with a wide opening shot of the castle where a big wedding reception (100 people were hired for this) is taking place. Then come a large earthquake and a big explosion from the volcano (the studio has build an enormous set, probably the interior of the volcano) and an ancient city emerges from under water. This is where Lara Croft jumps in and the info is? harder to get!

"We sneaked around the location and we were able to see the filming of the jet sky sequence. I must have seen 3-4 stunt men and women doing all kind of dangerous things for 2 days. Those who plays Lara Croft were wearing a silver like uniform with black strips. Angelina had to take a lot of takes on the jest sky for her close ups (she fell a lot). As we learned she doesn?t like the water filming a lot. She told us 'I just swim and that?s all!'

"The studio hired the best diving teams and equipment in the island and worked around the clock for 12-15 hours a day filming action scenes. No dialog scenes were made because no other actors were there. We learned that those scenes will follow in England at Pinewood Studios.

"One day they hired a big and old fishing boat for a scene where I saw Angelina Jolie for the first time in her full costume with those big guns. She was running and jumping around the boat as she was in danger. That?s all I got to see. The next day they were shooting a scene that looked like a boat wreckage. A stunt man was holding underwater a wood board and Angelina was lying on it unconscious.

If you ask me, Michelle Yeoh's "The Touch" is the movie 'Tomb Raider' should have been. Find item, kick butt, do acrobatics. No "Does daddy love me" or "Hear me speak with lousy Brit accent!" stuff.

As for this sequel, I'll see it, but I'm not expecting much. 'Entertaining summer movie' is a good enough standard for me.

    >Video games could make great films, but they always get rubish producers/directors/writers......if only spielberg did one <

Well, perhaps, but Spielberg first needs to have passion in ONE particular Video game.

Paul Anderson directed Mortal Kombat (1 not 2), and Resident Evil cuz this Man loved these games!!!

I find it important if you are helming a Video game movie, you either direct better at Action movies (Cuz Videos games usually are Action movies cuz their nature!). Or, you played a game yourself, and you loved it BIG TIME!

If I AM a director, which I am not skilled, the first Video game movie would be Diablo!!!!! I will make it as Gruesome, terrifying and as R-rated(Bloody, scary) as possible!!! [face_devil]

Tomb Raider sucked. I'd have to hear really good things about it before I see it.
I'm glad I only wasted five bucks on a bootleg copy instead of seeing it in theatres...

Yep. Ebert gave it 3 stars. Here are some excerpts from his review:

*"Lara Croft Tomb Raider" elevates goofiness to an art form. Here is a movie so monumentally silly, yet so wondrous to look at, that only a churl could find fault.

*The plot of "Lara Croft Tomb Raider" exists as a support system for four special effects sequences. Right away you can see that the movie is relatively advanced; "The Mummy Returns" had no plot, and one special effects sequence, which was 121 minutes long.

*...Everyone but Lara, whose light gray designer cape sweeps behind her so that we can admire the tight matching sweater she is wearing, which clings tightly to those parts of her body that can be found a foot below and a little to the front of her great ears.

    And the final wrap-up:
*Did I enjoy the movie? Yes. Is it up there with the Indiana Jones pictures? No, although its art direction and set design are (especially in the tomb with all the dead roots hanging down like tendrils). Was I filled with suspense? No. Since I had no idea what was going to happen, should happen, shouldn't happen or what it meant if it did happen, I could hardly be expected to care. But did I grin with delight at the absurdity it all? You betcha.

If you want to read the entire review, go here.

Was this a glowing, review? Mmmm...No.

    :D

Oh, for those of you not familiar with the term churl:

This is not news. Ebert is on crack by the way. ;)

"It's just a video game based movie, with VERY LOW Budget!!! Story might have sucked, but action ruled!"

Oh yes, I'd better repent, I was wrong to think story is what was important. ;)

Tomb Raider arrived in Hong kong this week, and shooting begins Tomorrow. It will last a week.

Well-known Hong Kong Actor Simon Yam Tat-Wah (John Woo's Bullet in the head) plays a main villian role in this movie.

Also keep in mind, the next Tomb Raider Video game, Angel Of Darkness, also releases this Spring! Should be a good game!

I love the Resident Evil games so much, that I actually thought the first movie was halfway entertaining. Plus, I love zombie flicks, and I've never seen a "good" one, so there. :p Besides, who knows, REII may end up decent because it does have a good story going for it.

Anyway, I'm done defending crap movies for this week.
