It's basically a remake of "The Quiet Man"...

Well, it's similar. But much of the appeal of The Quiet Man is that it's set in Ireland. Even though McLintock! doesn't have that, I still find it enjoyable.

Oddly enough, I know quite a few folks who don't like it, even though they like other Wayne movies.

Well, they're missing Hoosiers and The French Connection. And it would have been epically funny to broadcast Enemy of the State right behind The Conversation since Hackman plays the same kind of character. Mississippi Burning ain't bad, but it ain't great either.

A Bridge Too Far is a great film, but Hackman, assuming a clunky Polish accent, is one of the worst things in it (the only things worse? Ryan O'Neal's performance and Robert Redford's cameo).

You will absolutely love it, I think. I definitely think it's a great flick. Mercedes McCambridge is brilliant in it.

It's a shame they're not showing Suddenly, where Hayden is the sheriff in a small town that the President's train will pass through. Sinatra gives a golden performance in it as a sociopathic killer, hired to kill the president. It's a very good little thriller.

Only 19 when she made "Gaslight", Lansbury landed at the wrong studio--MGM, where she was generally cast in unsympathetic supporting roles. She's the best thing about "Dorian Gray" and very good as the impudent maid in "Gaslight". Her role in "The Reluctant Debutante" is small, but the movie is entertaining. The best role of all? The obsessed mother of Laurence Harvey in the original "The Manchurian Candidate". Scary--all the rage comes pouring out.

But like Lucille Ball, an actress who got more play on TV.

I actually don't remember her in Reluctant Debutante, but you're right, that's a very funn movie. Rex Harrison is brilliant. But I agree with your assessment of her; Gaslight, Dorian Gray and Manchurian Candidate are all great work by her, Candidate the best. She was also pretty funny in National Velvet, which I'm sure I will blow all my street cred by admitting I like. :p

It's amazing to look at her in The Manchurian Candidate where she's so icy and psychologically brutal and then see her in Bedknobs and Broomsticks where she's so charmingly naive. Which btw I actually prefer Bedknobs and Broomsticks to Mary Poppins.

They pointed out on TCM that she played far older than she was...she was the mother of a teenaged debutante in "The Reluctant Debutante" (she was 33) and she was the mother of the 33 year old Laurence Harvey in "The Manchurian Candidate" (she was 36).

Yul Brenner was one great actor. I know some people are against "The Ten Commandments" (and it's not on the list) but I think Brenner's great in it and had a great presence all around whatever movie he was in.

That doesn't mean he was exactly a virtuoso actor. But what he did, he did well.
