Taco Bell is one of the healthier fast food joints.

I eat there quite a bit, even on a diet.

I've never been to Mexico, but the times I've gone to California, the Mexican food made at Mexican-owned restaurants has always been superior.

Next time you're in San Francisco, got to Zona Rosa on Haight Street, order a burrito (doesn't matter which kind) and thank me later.

Real Mexican food> Fast food American attempt at Mexican food

Nothing like it, you just went to a restaurant where the chef just sucked. You can't judge every Mexican restaurant based on one place.

I love Chuy Arzola's! If there's anyone else here who lives in or near St. Louis, go there and try it. It's really great!

Yeah, real Tex-Mex cuisine is fantastic.

EDIT: It should be noted I live in Texas, and thus go to restaurants for Tex-Mex, not Taco Bell.

Even though I know this wasn't directed at me, that's true. I kind of based my liking of the food off of one restaurant too. Maybe I'll try a better one sometime, and see how I like it. :)

Well, I'll be honest, I do go to Taco Bell on occasion. But by no means to I consider it to be anything close to authentic. It's not even anything close to authentic Tex-Mex. And Tex-Mex really isn't authentic Mexican food.

Well, it's pretty obvious that Tex-Mex isn't Mexican food, which is why it's called "Tex-Mex." :p Nachos rule!

    I hate Tex-Mex. [face_sick]

Honestly though, I haven't found any taco shops in LA that I like. The closer you are to the border, the better the food, I find. :D

I think I will stop by my campus Taco Bell tomorrow. All this talk of Pseudo-Mexican food has made me hungry.

If any of you can tell me what epazote or cuitlacoche is, then you can start talking to me about "authentic" Mexican. Fricking philistines. Burrito. Jeez!

QFT. And to have real mexican food, you have to have a real mexican cook it, like my mom. The best type of mexican food comes from her, not some fake like taco bell or del taco.

That's the whole point of going to Taco Bell or the like. I'm not looking for authentic Mexican food at Taco Bell. I'm expecting Mexican food-as-processed-and-executed-by-Americans. In other words:
Something familiar, not the unknown or the x-factor. I'm looking for something reasonably safe made by people that are paid more than at the average Mexican restaurant.

I mean the Santa Fe Gordita, when it was still available at Taco Bell, was one of the best tasting things I ever ate. I don't know why they eliminated it, maybe it turned out to be a leading cause of erectile dysfunction, I dunno, but it tasted good! And it didn't feel like you just ate a battleship.
Exactly! They bring you a plate that's too hot to handle with all this melted stuff all over it and you're supposed to discern what the hell it is you're about to eat amongst the 3 inches of grease, hopefully you can remember the name. It's not always as simple as 'burrito'.
Food from a taco van. I rest my case! I can't believe people feed themselves that roach coach crap every day. It's like damn do you know what you're doing to yourself? Not what you're eating; do you know what you're doing to yourself.
I've been to Diego plenty of times, my family lives down there and I've lived there off and on. I will grant you that San Diego probably does Mexican food better than L.A., then again you've got me craving rolled tacos now and there are rolled taco joints on just about every corner in San Diego. Ok more towards downtown at least. :)
Well excuse me for wanting to eat food that tastes good and is somewhat in the same sphere of being good for me too! :p

You're right I am picky because I'm used to eating good. But just to clarify that doesn't mean eating a lot of Taco Bell though, I haven't been there in ages actually.

However, (and this is the part w

Yeah. The same reason I like Brisk Ice'd Tea. It's neither "ice'd", nor "tea". I won't dispute the "Brisk" identifier, however. But I still like the taste :)

I'd love to go to Rick Bayless' restaurant Frontera Grill in Chicago, which offers authentic Mexican cuisine.

He's famous in the culinary world for his authentic and superb Mexican and Central American cuisine.

If you're interested, you can see his current menu offerings:

I happen to work at a not-so-well-known Mexican fast-food place, and apparently it's not like all the rest. If you work where I work, you still are actually not grossed-out by the though of eating the food we make!

From what I've heard, it has to do with the way they make their food. One of my coworkers said that between her and her siblings, they'd worked at all four of the fast-food taco places in our town (which include Bell and Bueno), and learned from that that at Taco Bell they cook their meat in boiling water. I don't know what else contributes to it's supposed grossness though.

This is true... when I was really young, I worked at a taco bell for about two days. [face_sick]

They serve grade E meat... and the reason they can get away with it, is it's dehydrated.... it's instant meat. [face_sick]

At my place we use real ground beef. Like the kind you can buy at the grocery store.

Edit to harpuah: Is the chicken there okay though? And what about the other items, is the beef the only thing ya don't want to eat?

I already knew this. However, I thought it was D grade meat.

But technically, according to the instructions on the taco seasoning package, you boil the meat as well - after you brown it.

I'm sure it's semi prep'd meat that you hydrate in a similar fashion.

Edit: Now I'm hungry for tacos. :(
