Chapter 4


?M?m?Master?? Anakin blinked in disbelief. ?What?how -,?

?Senator.? Obi-Wan?s bowed his head in respect. ?I?m sorry to disturb you,? he paused, his eyes flickering from a shocked Anakin to a bewildered Padmé. ?It appears my former padawan got lost on his way to the Chancellor?s office.?

?The Chancellor?? Padmé repeated in confusion, turning to face Anakin. ?You were supposed to be meeting with Palpatine??

Anakin looked away, his cheeks flushing a bright red. ?Well?I?uh?doubt it was very important,? he replied weakly.

?Not important?? Padmé frowned. ?How can a meeting with the Chancellor not be important??

Anakin clenched his jaw, refusing to answer.

?Ani,? Padmé lightly touched his arm. ?What is going on??

?That is what I would like to know,? Obi-Wan said, walking up to the couple, staring pointedly at Anakin.

?I?you needed me here,? Anakin finally answered, ignoring him.

?But I?m fine -,?

?I couldn?t stand not knowing what had happened,? Anakin continued. ?Or if you were all right. There were all these rumors and no one seemed to know anything.?

?I?m sorry you worried,? Padmé replied softly. ?I couldn?t get word to you. I wanted to but -,?

?I understand.? Anakin smiled, taking her hands in his and squeezing. ?I?m just glad you and the -,? he froze, suddenly remembering Obi-Wan?s presence, ?the?ah?your family are all right.?

He shot a quick glance at Obi-Wan, receiving a reproving look in response.

?Now that you know everyone is fine,? Obi-Wan began in a tight voice. ?We really need to be returning to Coruscant. I believe the Chancellor is still waiting for you -,?

?I?m not going back,? Anakin announced firmly.?

?Excuse me??

?Anakin!?

Padmé pulled her hands free, her eyes narrowing. ?You have to go back.?

?No I don?t,? he replied, gently caressing her cheek. Turning to Obi-Wan, he said, ?Master, I?m sorry. My place is with Padmé -,?

?Anakin,? Obi-Wan began in a tight voice, holing up his hand to halt any interruption. ?I am well aware of your feelings for Padmé but you can?t let them get in the way of your duty.?

?This isn?t just me or my feelings,? Anakin argued. Placing his arm around Padmé?s shoulders, he continued, ?We don?t just love each other -,?

?Anakin -,? Padmé tried to interject.

?We?re married.?

Obi-Wan felt all the air leave his body as Anakin?s words echoed in his mind. Married? How could Anakin have betrayed him ? his commitment to the Order ? that way?
?Wha?what?? he gasped?

?I?m sorry you had to hear it like this, Obi-Wan,? Padmé began in a sad tone. ?I?we had hoped to be able to tell you?,? her words trailed off as she looked to Anakin for help.

?At the right time,? he finished.

?Th..the right time?? Obi-Wan repeated, anger lacing his tone. ?When exactly is ?the right time? to tell someone you have been lying to them for?how long exactly??

?Three years,? Padmé whispered.

All the color drained from Obi-Wan?s face as his mouth dropped open in shock. Three years. Anakin had been living with him, fighting with him, looking him in the eyes for three years and lying. How was that possible?

?I..I don?t know you at all,? he breathed, staggering backwards.

?Master, I?m sorry.? Anakin took a tentative step forward, freezing at the betrayal in Obi-Wan?s eyes.

?How could you??

Anakin sighed, his shoulders slumping. ?I never meant to hurt you -,?

?You betrayed me, the Order!?

?I?m sorry.?

Obi-Wan gazed at him silently for several awkward minutes, struggling to keep his emotions in check, realizing this was not the time or place to deal the situation. ?We need to leave for Coruscant immediately,? he finally said.

?Master, I?ve already decided I?m not -,?

?You?re in enough trouble as it is, Anakin,? Obi-Wan warned. ?Don?t push it. The Chancellor is expecting -,?

?You don?t understand,? Anakin interrupted. ?I can?t go back. I don?t have a choice.?

Obi-Wan exhaled heavily. ?I?m willing to keep your secret. For now,? he quickly

 

POOR Obi-Wan!

He has a point!

 

Oh, I'm not going to lie, but I had hoped that this would keep Anakin away from Palpatine...

But Obi-Wan is more understanding then I would have expected.

Anakin walked away from Palps himself and Obi takes him right back! Oh Force!!

 

owww... poor Obi-Wan. I am sure that hurt. And to think that even now he is willing to protect Anakin.
That is the Obi-Wan I know and love.
