I dont know how many people know this secret, as it wasnt even on Uthar's wookiepedia page before I added it a while back, but when I first played KOTOR, I played as a darksider - making the revelation that I was the former Sith Lord Revan even more potent - as from being an aspiring Sith, I was the Dark Lord himself. But I had also saved the mission on planet Korriban for last, in anticipation that as part of an RPG for the first time, there would be lots of cool Sith lore there - and I would now be playing it knowing I was Revan. During my stay at the Sith Academy, when the coup attempt by Yuthura Ban against Uthar Wynn was initiated, I warned Uthar of her plot straight away, finding his charecter more appealing than someone who mearly craved advancement, and believing (rightly) that she would have turned on me anyway. When the time came in Naga Sadow's 'tomb' for the coup to occur, Yuthura was killed after being led to believe I was on her side when my loyalties lay with Uthar, and Uthar then recognised me as the Dark Lord Revan himself, master of Malak - dedicating the entire Sith Adademy to me, who he saw as the true Dark Lord, and allowing me to blissfully walk out the front door without being attacked by the practicing students, and knowing that the Sith Academy, and therefore the planet Korriban itself, was now loyally mine, under the command of Uthar ;) Very rewarding, and a testament to Bioware's excelence.

One of the great things about KOTOR was that Uthar, a minor charecter, technically a 'boss' of the Korriban level, was so well charecterised. Throughout the trilogies and books, we have always encountered those Sith who desired to change the galaxy and rule, and who sometimes thought they were doing the right thing like Anakin - it was refreshing to encounter in KOTOR the essence of the Sith Order - actual force-sensetive diciples and their devoted and contemplative master, a quiet and restrained powerfull Sith covered in his Sith tatoos and meditating in the main chamber, dedicated to passing on the Sith system. Uthar was perhaps the best secondary charecter in KOTOR in my opinion - greater than Calo Nord, etc - second only to Malak in terms of bad guys in the game. I hope to see more of this, rather than the usual megelomaniac types in the Legacy era - someone must be training all those Sith afterall ;)

Well, from what we have said this point of view is more common among Legacy era Sith than in any other era. Especially Darth Wyrrlok is characterized in pretty much the same fashion.

    Coward!

You bring shame and dishonour to the Literature community. Good golly gosh, I didn't know what saving throws were, thought the fist-icons looked silly. My word, my gluttony for limited experience points and what treasure I could scavange off them had me facing both boobies at once.

Thank Hutt girth for Force Waves. I Force Waved for my miserable life. Existence. My hide! That Bruce bald Willis could choke me to death just twice; with Ban flying at my face it was touch and go. I could take one out through sabering with the other dazed, but not both at once. Last world in the game, I was getting powerful but defensive prowess was low.

Nord's armour did the job. I prayed the rest.

And you took the easy route?

Not really the easy route - I could have easily slaughtered them all seeing as Korriban is very easy as a last level - but I took the far more satisfying route, not wanting to destroy my Sith brothers and sisters needlessly ;)

Uthar Wynn was awesome. A badass baddie who could think for himself. Pragmatic and reasonable. With more Sith like him, their order might stand a chance to run the galaxy for a few thousand years.

    His is not true Sith.

A disciple of the Dark Side, perhaps. But to truly be Sith is to have that bloodlust and powercrazed gleam of the eye. He may be a good teacher to the pragmatic aspects of the darkside, but the true teachings of the Sith are not practiced in him.

Now you get him to build a powerbase of students to send out to the Sith fleet who then stage a mutiny, kill Malak, and decare Wynn Dark Lord of the Sith. Then I'll grant him title.

No "satisfied" toady can truly be Sith.

I dont agree with that whatsoever - else no Sith would ever take an apprentice or follow another Sith.

Uthar was a manifestation of the true Sith Order - not everyone must use the Sith Code for meglomania despite which Sith get all the attention.

If Revan was the 'king' of the Sith Order, Uthar was a monk and teacher in a monestary/academy of this 'kingdom'.

This is a case of warrior syndrome - just like some people assume Klingons must all be warriors (when they quite obiously need infrastructure and science to run an interstallar empire), in Star Wars, I guess some people think all Sith are melomaniacs when they run an order which quite obiously must incorporate philosophers, scientists, teachers, etc.

If Revan and Malak were 'Alexander', then Uthar would be like 'Socrates', or Chanakya to Chandragupta.

It comes back to the nature of the dark side, this argument does.

The dark side corrupts. It warps your reasoning. It seeks to dominate and destroy. Thus, there's something very odd about a Sith Lord with no ambition beyond being an instructor.

Then again, we don't know he DIDN'T have ambition, just that he wasn't consumed enough to let it interfere with his job.

    1. Maybe, or maybe power currupts.

    2. No evidence.

    3. No evidence.

    4. I didnt find it odd at all.

So people's feelings about the nature of the dark side are generally made up by them - often amounting to fanon. In actual fact, the Sith Code mearly facilitates how to get somewhere in life, not where to go - or, even if it did encourage maximisation of potential, of which there is no evidence, do you think an intellectual member of the Sith Order neccecarily sees being ruler as the greatest achievement in life anyway? So it is not suprising at all that some people mearly want to be the best damn Sith philosopher or teacher they can be - and it actually makes a lot of sense.

Perhaps this all arose because of Bane's thousand year reforms? Afterall there were only two Sith to fullfill the roles of an entire order at this point. If this is the case, then these assumptions must die in eras at which the Sith Order is at its full power, such as KOTOR and Legacy - being a full order, they will no doubt have their shares of Jocasta Nu types.

The proof is in the pudding. The dark side has consistently been shown as a corrupting influence that thrives on and is empowered by negativity, often pushing its users to perpetuate violence, anger, sadness, lust for power.

My favorite example is Anakin Skywalker on the Mustafar landing platform. Sure, Anakin had a ton of issues, but his rationalization, his real drive to betray the Jedi was to save Padme. Once he's killed all the Separatist leaders, he suddenly wants to take over the galaxy, and at the drop of a hat makes accusations of betrayal by the woman he loves and is willing to choke her to death. The power of the dark side has corrupted him such that he's lost sight of his reasons for embracing the dark side at all.

There do seem to be some, however, that are able to fight the worst of this influence. Uthar is one of them. Krayt seems to be another.

Youve picked perhaps the most ignorant and exploited of all Sith as an example - plus he is from the Bane era. Also I wouldnt assume anything about the nature of the Dark Side since we are not even sure if the force has a Dark and Light side or if it is mearly the individual use that defines it.

Yeah we do. OOU sources, G canon, and Luke Skywalker's NJO agree. 9 out of 10 choosy moms reject the Potentium.

I agree, to some extent. I would say that he is true Sith, if "true Sith" doesn't necessarily mean "utterly corrupted by the dark side".

"Legacy" seems to be indicating that mastery of the Sith teachings is about more than just mindless slavery to the unlimited powah of the dark side. The thing is that the maniacs like Exar Kun, Malak, Nihilus, Maul, Vader, and Palpatine fall into that latter group - and they were the ones (with the exception of Maul) who got ahead and made themselves well-known and feared. Dooku alias Tyranus was not one of these, but he rode along on the coattails of Palpatine's insidious (pun intended) plot to take over, and he was just a pawn anyway. Nihl and Maul are quite comparable, I think, and they're also comparable to monsters like Desann. They're powerful, but they just use raw, brute force to try to win, and against a clever adversary, they will usually come up short.

Now, I find Darth Krayt and Darth Wyrrlok III to be interesting. There's a bit of Bane, a lot of Uthar Wynn...they're just not typical, savage, vicious, ruthless Sith. Krayt clearly has the plotting capacity of Exar Kun, Traya, Palpatine, Kueller, and other brilliant, deranged dark-siders, yet he seems refined despite his massive vonduun crab armor. He and Wyrrlok don't act like bloodthirsty, murderous Sith. They're almost just like Grey Jedi in the vein of Quinlan Vos, Kyp Durron, Vergere, and others with a huge amount of power and almost limitless assets. Yet, with all that power, they don't commit to an act of pure evil. Exar Kun and Palpatine both seem to have had grand designs to enslave the whole galaxy and bind it to their wills; Traya planned to annihilate the Force completely; Kueller wanted to kill huge numbers of people to somehow avenge his personal losses. All that Krayt is trying to do is create a new order for the galaxy in his image...apparently. Maybe he has a Palpatinian plan, maybe not. And Wyrrlok appears to be...satisfied.

Just because Luke's NJO rejects it dosent mean he is right.

Darth Wyrrlok - I rest my case - and I dont think he is any less a Sith than Krayt - I think he might even know the Sith ways better.

He had ambition. Else he wouldn't have made it to headmaster of the Sith Academy. Which, I would assume, is a pretty high position in the Sith theocracy. But ambition is tempered by ability. Is he powerful enough and have enough charisma to overthrow Malak and assume the mantle of the Sith Empire? Probibly not now, maybe in the future. For now he makes the most of his station in life and hitches his support to a 'winner' who he also feels is the best leader for the Sith Empire at this time.
