weezer I'm only querying the amount of Exits/Doors because in the BTS Celebration reel it did not look as though there was a door on the starboard side. I'm pretty sure that the front ramp has been discarded for good as well.
You might be right. I thought we had seen it with both doors open, but I couldn't find any pictures to back that up.
FWIW, I hated it as well. It reminded me of an amusement park ride, that one where everyone climbs aboard in multiple rows and are all facing forward, and it goes up and does some spins and such. I love the notion of modular starship design, it just makes good fiscal sense for a rebellion/resistance (and for the Empire/FO, for that matter). And if this were to be a retrofitted B-Wing, that's cool, it's just an unappealing version of it. Logistically, the troop compartment seemed too small, for one thing. A lot of armament and engine for a handful of troops. When it landed, it looked like a toy instead of something that was seemingly looking to project an "industrial" vibe. Funny part is, the B-Wing seems to have a lot of diehard fans, at least among the modelers (I am not one of them), but this design, while cool in concept, seemed to have been phoned in a bit in terms of execution. As always, IMHO.
Keycube "Logistically, the troop compartment seemed too small, for one thing. A lot of armament and engine for a handful of troops. " Looking at it I would wager that it could hold as many troops (standing) as the First Order Troop Transport. That's about three times as many troops as the U-Wing.
I think of the U-wing being like a Blackhawk. It's a tactiical transport intended for fire support and insertion of a squad of troops. The First Order transport and the B-Wing-like transport are more platoon sized transports and not really intended to provide any fire support
Both carry 1 pilot and 20 passengers/stormtroopers, but the Resistance transport makes a far bigger target when attacked from behind making it far more vulnerable.
Wow, so that was how my online persona looked previously? She will look kind of weird, with her cockpit jutting out like that together with a "bulky rocket" type of rear... Now this makes me appreciate George Lucas for having that burger-with-olive-at-side and somehow getting the idea to design the Millennium Falcon with that iconic "fat and round" shape that is her most recognizable feature! And as for the U-Wing, it's definitely a favorite ship of mine now and let's hope an update version is made available in Episode 8... The one we saw in TFA is really ugly and kind of unsafe for the soldiers too - because several rounds of accurate blaster fire and probably a good long-range missile (like the one Baze used against the AT-ACT, in a Rogue One trailer) will ensure that all of them go BOOM together!
Yeah maybe a U-Wing that is larger and while it cannot become a snubfighter it still is more maneuverable and has more fire power compared to say a Lambda shuttle.
I think it would be great if the U-Wong was a true multi-role vehicle, may be they could re-jig the troop compartment so it could be used as a bomber. In it's Starfighter role the door gunner is surplus to requirements, so would the troop compartment be stripped down?
At least the U-Wing does not have such a big and long opening, which is an easy target to be shot at - although knowing how poor the Stormtroopers' aim is, they will miss such an easy place to shoot! The U-Wing and FO Troop Transporter have their openings facing the other side, and are also narrower... Thus limiting the chances of the enemy getting a good shot at those coming out! The Resistance Troop Carrier has a huge gun or two for suppressing fire though and it's pointing towards the enemy, unlike the U-wing. And the FO Troop Transport has it's ramp facing forwards not on the side BTW. All swings and roundabouts at the end of the day, they all have their good and bad points.
I'm surprised that we're not seeing the Mon Calamari Cruisers or The A or B wings appear in Rogue One. I mean We're seeing The X-wing, Y-wing, Corellian Corvette, Nebulan-B Frigate, the Hammerhead corvettes and the UT-60D gunship make an appearance so i guess i shouldn't be complaining.
Funny, actually I'm rather relieved. Perhaps Gareth Edwards looked up some of the original production materials like the ROJ Sketchbook and the Portfolio according to both of which the B-Wing fighter was "a new rebel combat vehicle" (Sketchbook) and "a new type of ship with pilot and copilot enclosed in a command pod on one wing" (Portfolio). Alternately he's is showing respect to George Lucas by not diminishing the impact the introduction of these new designs had for Return of the Jedi.
I thought I caught a glimpse of a Mon Cal cruiser, I could be wrong and it may just be a GR-75 Medium Transport.
The best I can make out from the best still I could find. Looks like three Nubulon B's, two Hammerhead Corvettes, a few CR-90 Corvettes, a load of GR-75 Medium Transports and what appears to be three Mon Cal Cruisers.
Do we get to see the classic AT-AT alongside the AT-ACT? I'm sure I've seen an image of the two separate types together in Scarif during the battle! Hope I'm not dreaming that haha
