Man WB really loves Frank Miller, it's very annoying.

You maybe right. There's been some set photos leaked online showing Leto in full suit, minus the face tattoos from the publicity photo.

It could be the cover to his next Thirty Seconds To Mars album.

For what it's worth I love the new look. Might be in the minority, but I think he looks awesome.

Stick around then. We need numbers to balance the "omg dc so grimdark" crowd.

The tattoos are admittedly stupid, as is an emo aesthetic in general. However, I had assumed this was a character for the upcoming Batman/Superman film. It's for "Suicide Squad?" As with the idea of a "Sinister Six" Spiderman movie, I have to ask who these films are intended for. Most of these characters aren't that interesting without someone to play off of, nor do I see the appeal in a film where they must ultimately fail in order for the status quo of the fictional universe to remain intact. Finally, as with the Batman/Superman film itself, is there any reason at all for these team-ups? The whole project seems dumb. I would much rather tell a contained story about a few characters that flows naturally, rather than trying to jam together a bunch of improbable elements for the sake of something "cool."

As others have said, the pose itself reflects "The Killing Joke" one. Almost everything else about that photo leaves me cold. Practically the opposite of the impression of the first photo of Affleck as Batman left me.

Wocky - I am not sure if animated films are your thing or not. If not, no worries. However, if you get a chance, check out the DC Animated Universe film "Assault on Arkham," which was released last year and is largely a film revolving around the Suicide Squad, not so much Batman.

I understand that a live action film is a different beast, but it's a good representation of how a story largely about villains can offer good quality.

Yeah, Ostrander's Suicide Squad was quality. It's weird that they are leading with it but hey, so was Iron Man being the first MCU film.

Yes, take, for example, Man of Steel -- a coming of age tale for one of the most violent psychopaths in history!

    I mean, uh...

    (I kid, because I love...)

I really liked the DCAU under Bruce Timm. I've been more ambivalent about the new line of animated films, as they've had some hits and misses. Suicide Squad, though, seemed like one of their weaker entries to my mind. Part of the problem is that there was really only one character in the whole thing--the anti-hero guy whom you either did or didn't like. The rest just seemed like extras with too much screen time.

I can understand that - there have certainly been some huge whiffs in what used to be a reliably high quality series.

Yeah, the reason is called "The New 52". It seems WB Animation has been mandated to adapt as much of that garbage as possible for the foreseeable future.

I seem to remember that Ledger's Joker was kept hidden until the first theatrical trailer.

The first "official" images we saw were Ledger's joker were the unpainted "scars" makeup

and the teaser photo that Nolan put a piece of frosted glass between him and the cameraman.

I hope that after all of the typical hyperbolic rancor... that all of the tattoos end up being shown to be fake because the Joker is in prison in the film and, as soon as he is free, he wipes them off. It would not be out of character for him to amuse himself by mimicking the other prisoners. So, let all of the usual suspects have a fit and then in the film he just wipes them off once they've lost their entertainment value to himself.

I doubt Joker will look the same in future movies. He has such a diverse amount of looks it's a marketing goldmine. Suicide Squad appears to be a prison movie so Joker will look like a prisoner. Given Joker has an army of goons who keep wanting to work for him it'd be understandable if he immerses himself in the prison culture to lure more followers to him.

Next movie he might be in a tux with no tattoos. Movie after that he might be in a purple suit with a gun that shoots a boxing glove.

Precisely. And that transformation could easily take place sometime after the opening scene. We have zero context.

No, you're absolutely correct -- but officially-released photos by the production team generally indicate what they want us to see and what the character's traits/looks will be in the film they are making.

    Keep in mind that this:

... is also an officially released image, straight from the director and there is not a single tattoo in sight. Be a bit odd to have him put on some clothes for a random photo op and then undress to finish applying makeup.

I fail to see what was hyperbolic. No one was said that the whole movie was doomed or that the character couldn't be interesting. They said the tattoos looked stupid. Because, guess what? They look stupid. If they turn out to be an illusion he uses for a few scenes, they will still have looked stupid during that one short stint. I don't see what sort of vindication you think you're getting, let alone what unfair criticism you feel the need to be vindicated from.
