I remember hearing Paul Dini being interviewed on Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman podcast and Dini talking about watching that clip of Arleen Sorkin doing that harlequin performance. It was so serendipitous. I love the character of Harley Quinn and gave my dog that name. I also heard the interview Smith did with Sorkin on his podcast and Sorkin said something profound that I tried a bit, which was that Sorkin's father didn't want his kids to watch a movie more than once because life is short and they should see something new rather than waste time in seeing something again. I think I practiced that for about nine months, which was kind of easy because I was working so many hours.

I'd figured the trailer would drop some time soon as I'm sure it would be attached to the Joker film. And I'm not surprised about the reshoots being limited to action sequences since it was reported awhile back that they bought John Wick director Chad Stahelski to design and work on additional action scenes for the film alongside director Cathy Yan. Which was music to my ears because I want to see Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain kick ass! I mean, the Arrowverse set a pretty good bar in action/fight choreography, and Birds of Prey should be able to leap over that bar. So, I'm hoping the action is close to any of the action sequences in the John Wick films.

Sadly, this shouldn't be taken lightly but a serious threat. Moreover, I'm reminded of the theater shooting in Colorado during The Dark Knight screening.

why would a Joker fan shoot up a theatre of people watching a Joker movie of which the presumed shooter would be a fan of? The rhetoric about this movie being "dangerous" is getting kind of out there.

Well because Joker is the first violent movie since The Dark Knight Rises when the Aurora shooting happened, they figured they'd get the warning out now (sarcasm).

    It’s not that:
So it seems like kind of a routine thing getting drummed up by the geek press because it’s a geek movie.

How the "dark web" is still a forum for anarchists to plan attacks like these in the first place just boggles the mind; but that's a topic for another thread.

There are like four separate moments in that paragraph that make me want to bang my head on my desk. These Internet "critics/pundits/influencers" who think they know better about a movie before it even comes out than the people who made the movie themselves need to go away. It's unbelievable to me that the "critic" culture on YouTube has gotten so toxic that it actually has me coming to the defense of the studios. But it has and I am. No studio has ever changed a movie for the better based on what some idiot said on YouTube. The studios are not brilliant; I grant you that (though, you know, they seem to be mostly making billions of dollars, while most of these YouTube pundits are, you know, not). Sure, they make stupid mistakes. But the rescue mission to save studios from themselves is not coming from YouTube.

And anyway knowing a plot point has nothing to do with whether a movie is going to be good or bad; any plot point can be done well or poorly. It's all in the execution and that is precisely the thing that you cannot know until you've actually seen the movie. The spoiler?/scoop in question sounded ridiculous, I grant you, but I could totally see it working if it was done right. I could see it being downright brilliant if done right. It's not just what a movie's about; it's how it's about it*. And that's what this spoiler/scoop culture on YouTube doesn't understand. It's like some plot points and/or themes are just good or bad on their face and you can make a qualitative judgment based purely on the facts about a movie - here's a scoop: movies are art, so you can't.

*This is a quote from some brilliant critic or other, but my break is over and I don't have time to look up and see who it is. Regardless, if it sounds more brilliant than the kinds of things I usually say, that's because I'm stealing it from someone who is much more brilliant than I am. :p

Yeah I tend to think that if YouTube pundits in general were as brilliant as many of them consider themselves, they either would have or still would be working in the industry on even a small, more indy film level instead of making their bones cultivating a following on social media. Kevin Smith being the prime example of one who swears up and down he doesn't have a great deal of talent, shares what he knows born out of his experience actually making movies and TV shows, and yet still manages to put that on hold every once in a while to go out and make more of 'em.

I think it was a wise move by the studio. Too much risk and really no rewards to answering questions for a film that doesn't really need any additional promotion. I got my tickets to see the film on Saturday evening. I'm so looking forward to it.

This morning, my social media feed was blowing up with the different version of the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey movie. And once again, they don't do anything to increase my excitement or anticipation for the film. If anything, it subdues them. Hopefully the trailer that drops tomorrow will do something about that.

It's going to take a little for me to come to grips with such a wildly off-the-books take on Black Mask, a villain I've wanted to see adapted for a while, I do like the look of this. Visually it looks great, and it looks exactly like the "badass women kicking ass" movie they've been pitching from the start, built around a plot revolving around the idea of rediscovering who you are after leaving a toxic, controlling relationship, using the OTT action movie angle to turn it into an empowerment narrative. I'm all for that, and for the creative choices showcased here, even if it looks like a very loose adaptation of nearly every character save for Quinn, kind of.

it felt like the joker movie trailer, a bit? that's the vibe i got.

it was interesting. i'm not a huge fan of any of these characters, but mcgregor as black mask could turn out to be a nice casting choice.

It's not how I care to see some of these characters, namely Montoya, but it looks like fun.

Yeah, I got the Joker movie trailer vibes too. I think it because the score of both trailers sound similar. And I don't think that was a coincident, since this trailer will be attached to Joker.

As for the trailer, well, it did increase my interest in the film, but not all that much. Harley cutting her hair does bother me a bit as it has that season two of the TV series Felicity effect on me (where the main character cut her hair and the show's rating sank like the Titanic). I probably would be fine with the promo materials if it was titled Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey rather than the other way around. I kind of feel like the title and the actual content of the film is somewhat a "bait and switch" thing. It's a fanboy thing I suppose as I read Gail Simone's run of Birds of Prey and feel like they're getting slighted here.

Big Harley fan, as you may already know. I will probably see the new movie in the theater; but aren't necessarily as enthusiastic about it as others are. Looks like they're retconning some stuff; for instance when she acquires the hyenas (she definitely had them early on while she was still with The Joker in the Animated Series). So I assume the timeline goes Birds of Prey -> Suicide Squad, correct? Otherwise it wouldn't make any sense that SS left with her reuniting with The Joker at the end of SS only to cut all ties with him at the beginning of BOP. I don't even know who the other characters she's uniting with are. At least from what I can tell it's not Catwoman or Poison Ivy.

Ok, another version of Batgirl (I'm kind of used to Barbara Gordon; but I guess this follows some alternate universe).

I never thought about the timeline in where this film, Birds of Prey, falls into. I just assumed it was set after Suicide Squad. To me, that line about breaking up with the Joker is enough to move on from the Suicide Squad and the Joker.

I'm not holding the DCEU or Worlds of DC, or whatever it's called to any source material. It's it own thing and I'm find with that. I mean, the Harley solo comic book it wacky and jumps all over the place. At least, the last time I read it.

I couldn't really determine the plot of the film by the trailer, but it would appear that Cassandra Cain would be the McGuffin in the story and that's how everyone is connected.

If it’s before, would t the emancipation thing and getting out of a toxic relationship thing be thoroughly undermined?

Good point. Although there have been instances where Harley and Joker would break up and then get back together again.

Among my favorite Animated Series episodes. She sort of befriends (or at least respects) Wayne; albeit unwittingly of his alternate identity and there's that scene in end where she kisses Batman who bought her the dress she coveted before she had gone off the rails again.

Yeah, it one of my favorite episodes as well. I think it's probably the episode my Harley so endearing with the fans, as well as give her sort of a "hallway pass" on her crimes as Batman does. If Batman sees the good and potential in her, so does the audience. Additionally, referenced in the video clip above, Batman mentions about having a bad day. Wonderfully crafted episode.

And hearing that reference about "one bad day," that gets me hyped for the Joker film. That reference and refreshing my memory of a pseudo Joker origin story in Under the Red Hood and The Killing Joke.
