Keep in mind Black Adam basically came out right at the time Zaslav was having all of the DC movie production unit reorganized and put under him, so it is literally entirely possible they had that cameo left in or added as a “just in case” option if the movie was some runaway success and they wanted to reverse course in some fashion. Which it wasn’t. Big Z doesn’t believe in anything other than the stock price so it’s not hard to imagine him doing a lazy hedge like that in a film he essentially inherited.

Enjoyed the SUPERMAN teaser/trailer a lot. I'm optimistic. Personally, I would not have opened it with Superman "in a bad way" - I have no problem with that being a part of the movie, I just think that if you want to "turn the page" (and I say that as someone who enjoyed the Snyder movies, sue me!) you want to emphasize the upbeat and the hopeful and the positive. That's there in the teaser, but that opening set the tone a bit more towards the "somber".

    A few random thoughts...

    (1) I am going to make sure nothing bad happens to Krypto before I see this. That's a deal-breaker for me.
    (2) Krypto. Amazing. Yeah, I foresee buying a lot of Krypto-merch.
    (3) Okay, Guy Gardner's haircut was always weird. Always. But... man. There's weird and there's whatever this is. Will that have any impact on me seeing the movie or not? No. Not at all. Just saying.
    (4) Yeah, I wish they had gone with the classic Williams' score.
    (5) I like the bright look of the movie. Sunshine, bright colors. Hollywood tends to be all or nothing - I say that because I have no problem with "dark and gritty" but not everything has to be, or should be, dark and gritty.
    (6) Did I mention Krypto?
    (7) I liked Superman's costume. Want to see more of it, before any final judgment, but so far, I like it.

Solid and appealing. That's not damning with faint praise, BTW. A definite thumbs up for me. With a couple of tonal and musical tweaks I would have been solidly geeking out. But as is? Definitely happy with it!

Do we think Clarke and Louise already together? Will she know his identity? I hope we see Superman as the loving everyday man i got from this teaser. I always hated the dark broody Snyder version. Let me see him being silly Superman

Seems like it (from the teaser) She kisses Clark and hugs Superman later on.

That's really where I'm at. It didn't have to be Snyder, but the tease in Black Adam left me so excited for a familiar, yet new take, and then they took it away from us less than a month after. That left me with zero trust for anything DC puts out.

I dunno. That shot at the office could be misleading. Maybe she's playing along w Clark's secret. She might know who he is already though. She almost looks at him like "Time for Superman?", and he looks up.

Yeah, I'm hearing buzz from a lot of media outlets that they're worried the writers are cramming too much in. They might be, but if you're cutting out the origin story with all the Krypton stuff and Clark growing up and Pa Kent dying and the Fortress being built etc etc then the movie could be just a day (or a week) in the life of Superman and his super friends.

Superman (1978) is 2 hr 23 min. It takes 48 minutes to get to Metropolis and then at 1hr 8min is when we see Superman in all his glory saving Lois. So if the movie starts with Superman getting his butt kicked and then we learn what's going on in his world, then it could work.

I had to remind myself that Gunn's first chapter in the DCU is called "God and Monsters" so this trailer is definitely on theme with his plan so far.

It's amazing to me that you can run an IP into the ground with low quality product, and then just start it back up from scratch again a year later. And the fans accept that that's how it goes every time; they'll even go "gosh I wonder if the love interest knows his secret identity?'. Every single time.

How many times has Superman been rebooted? Between the comics, cartoons, tv series and movies, it's gotta be over 10 times. To me that's the definition of creative dearth, but apparantly it's good business and that's what it's all about.

I'd add that Gunn's first MCU movie and its successors show that he has a record of successfully dropping the audience into a fantastical world of diverse science fiction factions and settings, with the Ravagers, Kree, Nova Corps, and civilization of Xandar - and that there *have* been multiple Superman adaptations that have successfully made "Clark lives in a crazy, over-the-top world in the first place" work as their eventual or immediate status quo (Superman: The Animated Series, Smallville, Superman and Lois).

I'm not shocked over trepidation of doing that with Superman in the movies, though, even if I don't really think the trepidation is warranted; an odd similarity between almost all the solo Superman films thus far has been a emphasizing him as a singular extraordinary person and event for much of the films, and putting the focus on a world astounded by his very existence, rather than making him the most prominent but by no means rare example of a crazy world where humans look up and down at various extraordinary individuals surrounding them.

As you pointed out, the "Gods and Monsters" thing is an important distinction to almost all his previous movie appearances; in both Donner and Snyder's stuff, humans never really got a chance to acclimate to a superhero world, while the comics had Metropolis citizens already being a bit jaded about superheroes at times even back in the 1950s.

Never happen but they ought to have Joseph Fares cameo as a Metropolite:

In addition to whatever else they may have done, WB and DC just handled the public relations of their transition very badly. I know some will argue that Henry Cavill as only of interest to/liked by "Snyder fan boys" but I don't think that's true and I think they handled his situation in very clumsy, awkward, sloppy manner. IMHO, it's quite possible to understand why WB/DC wanted to move on from him, but to find the way they went about it off-putting.

‘Superman’: James Gunn On Superhero’s “Complicated” Relationship With Krypto; “He’s Not Nearly The Best Dog”

“His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.”

“It was a way of saying we’re embracing all of the Superman mythology,” Gunn continued, “These superhero movies have taken characters and said ‘Okay, yeah, it’s Batman, but it’s not any of the other stuff. It’s Superman, but it’s not any of the other stuff.”

“He lives in a world of superheroes. This is an alternative history world where superheroes exist but it’s also incredibly grounded. It’s about real people having real lives, there just happens to be metahumans there. Superman has friends who are other superheroes.”

“He’s got a flying dog, he’s got a giant fortress,” adds Gunn. “He has a lot of the things we love from the Superman comics and mythology that we haven’t been able to see as much of in a film and definitely haven’t been able to in a grounded way.”

comics krypto is fiercely loyal to kal-el, but often does not get along well with others - especially kara, at first. if she arrives on earth during the film, maybe that's what gunn is referring to.

it's been shown in dcau, too:

I've read exactly one Superman comic and it was The Death of Superman part 4 back in the 90s. I am aware of Krypto as a character but I have no idea what his comic origin is. I assume the movie won't explain it; he'll just be there.

Question for the group -- how much knowledge will be expected of the audience before going into this film? I assume everyone knows Superman's basic powers and weaknesses, but, for example, will a "Green Lantern" be explained or do you need to know the basics like it's a person with a ring that is tasked with protecting an area of space?

I think it'll be mostly unexplained. I think the idea here is 'welcome to a crazy comic universe, just sit back and go with it'.

    This is some
I have to give Gunn credit here, expect it to be easy to follow - he's proven, regardless of what he does with the film, the setup will be made clear in the first 10 minutes and the audience will get all the essential info from the characters. He's a very competent filmmaker in that regard.

Peacemaker referenced some suicide squad movie I've never seen, and I did fine without whatever back story, so credit to Gunn for not expecting me to be certified as some kind of extended universe fanatic before I'm qualified to be entertained. What in the sector we refer to as the Filoni Fallacy.

Well its nothing new , they've been doing it with characters older than Superman; Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Jesus. etc.

Gunn excells at using familiar, "real" archetypes to make extraordinary heroes and villains feel familiar enough that we know *them*, if not neccessarily their origins.

Yondu is a great example of this, since Michael Roker basically plays him more like a redneck trucker or motorcycle gang leader, so even though he's a blue skinned, tech-mohawked space pirate, you pretty much know exactly what his personality and leadership style is, and just sort of role with it.

This film's using Nathan Fillion to play Guy Gardner, a notoriously smug and at times infuriating superhero with a deeply hidden heart of gold and questionable fashion sense; Gunn probably went with the character and cast Fillion in the role to make sure that Superman's coworkers include an all-too relatable "that one otherwise reliable guy who needs to shut up sometimes" example.

They have one of the most famous and lucrative IPs in existence. They will reboot this until Jesus literally reboots/returns.

I think the best example is the first scene with Ronan in GOTG. The scene successfully establishes motivations and personality quirks for Ronan, Gamora, Nebula, and Thanos, and Thanos doesn’t even show up. To be fair Kevin Feige was also pretty involved in that production so credit to the whole team. It’s a great “scene setting” sequence.

Didn't realise that was Fillion, funny 'cos I thought the guy playing Supes looks rather like Nathan Fillion.
