Yeah, but these are comic book properties. Wonder Woman has comic book origins that are based on Greek mythology, not literal ones. Paradise Island/ Themyscira is a fictional place originally based on part Mount Olympus, part Atlantis. The rebooted Themyscira is hidden in the Bermuda Triangle (unless that's changed) and can teleport if threatened. It's not really classical Greek per se. It's doubtful that things like a teleporting island will be mentioned at all for the Wonder Woman of the movies, but her backstory is certainly more fantasical and not limited to actual history. Wonder Woman had an invisible jet for Hera's sake, although in later versions, she can fly on her own. She's not going to worry about wearing flowing cotton robes because they are traditionally Greek.

I think that, (although I don't know for sure, but it also seemed to come up in the MOS thread) you expect more realistic explanations for your fantastical movies in general?

However, I think you'd definitely prefer Isis, which was a different DC comics property, and was a tv show back in the 70's ( it has been released on DVD) although it's probably dated these days.

    Isis:

Isis, of sorts, did make an appearance on Smallville though.

Well, if those Chicago pictures with Gal Gadot were the real thing, we've already seen her in civilian gear --which comprises of a regular old little black blue cocktail dress. To me that suggests they're not making Diana Prince a public figure from another culture as such. i.e. "Diana Prince" is just Wonder Woman's secret identity and "Diana Prince" is not a public figure in the nature of an ambassador from another culture. In that case, probably we wouldn't see "traditional" Amazonian dress unless she's on Amazonian soil or some such. The Wonder Woman identity therefore goes one of two ways: traditional-ish battle garb, or more utilitarian garb along the lines of pants/jacket, just as her civilian gear is utilitarian for blending in with Western civilisation.

I suppose the Chicago dress could be Diana-Prince-the-public-figure disguising herself as a secretary or something, i.e. she gets back to her apartment and it's back into flowing Amazonian dresses, but I don't really see it as likely. At the moment I'd bet on a closer parallel with Batman/Bruce Wayne than them trying to explain how she's an ambassador from Themyscira in the Western world.

Just upping to discuss the paper thin Talia in The Dark Knight Rises.

Can I get some background on what this beef is before I do this?

Why don't you just explain your opinion? You say you undertstood Talia's character? What is it?

So with respect of your defence of The Dark Knight Rises in general, and its interpretation of Talia al Ghul specifically, are we to interpret your persistent silence as an admission you have no salient points?

At this point, you literally spent years dodging this question Arwen. Is this really easier than just putting one paragraph together about your opinion?

So, using qui tacet consentit as our guiding principle, your silence admits you have literally nothing?

Good. Knew it anyway, but good.

I am glad that we can put this to rest, and that Jabba-wocky and I can find common ground on this issue.

Come on, you're supposed to say "I wasn't using the American spelling!"

We really just want to know what you think Talia's character was. Are you ever going to say?

I'm sorry your parents didn't care enough to invest in your education Arwen.

Jabba-wocky, I think your critique of the Joker's omniscience in The Dark Knight, whilst technically valid, is too unfair given examples like Skyfall show just how terrifyingly silly it can be. But, regardless, we agree that The Dark Knight Returns was a terrible entry in the DCU and gives Batfleck a leg up in terms of the hurdle he has to surmount.

I'll agree that in light of Skyfall, you really do have to be more charitable to the Joker. Likewise, in light Returns, and the non-character that was Talia (unless Arawn_Fenn finally wants to explain?) this new Affleck reboot will probably have an easier time of things.

That's weird, you used to sing the praises of it around here. Your opinion seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Either that or you've mistaken the title of a Nolan film for the title of a seminal comic book - but what kind of self-appointed Bat expert would make that kind of rookie mistake?

[face_laugh] Oh, right. That kind. Well, birds of a feather, and all that...

Don't forget, I'm the one who can spell things like "principle" and "its". The holes in your theory are showing.

Audiences sadly seem to expect these convoluted plots (I base this on the commercial successes of Overly Complex Plot films like Skyfall, Dark Knight, Dark Knight Crashes) and so if it's a thing in modern cinema we have to assess it relative to other complicated plots.

Looking forward to the trend dying off, along with steadycam.

Eh...that was a typo and you meant Rises, right? I'm not going crazy and you're not lambasting Miller's TDKR, right?

Seriously though, Rises won't get any better nor will Talia's arc make any more sense two years since nor 20 years from now. The story failed the movie right from the start, making a complete hash of the potential possibilities that TDK's ending offered. I mean, I thought that right after climbing on the Batpod, he'd go on being the silent guardian, enduring whatever was to come. But nooooo, that Batman went home that night to sulk and abandon the good fight for the better part of a decade mourning over ******** Cabbage Patch Face!? Ugh!

No, we agree with you. Arwen told us we were wrong. We asked Arwen to explain, Arwen fell into antagonistic troll mode. We got tired of that but reminded about it by the EpVII thread. Turns out, time hasn't changed Amren_Fett.
