James Gunn continues to be the voice of reason.

I don't think this was your intention, but I feel like this is the "May you live in interesting times" of Hollywood projects. :p

Eh, the Gunn statement didn't do much for me - to me, it's more "fighting with the fanbase" stuff, which has become all too common.

Exactly whose "outcry" is "disrespectful" (Weird choice of words, suggests Gunn and company are what, to be treated respectfully, versus with basic civility? And since when has James Gunn been the voice of high minded, polite discourse?)? What does "certain minority" mean, versus "minority" (read that sentence with the word 'certain' removed and tell me it doesn't play better!)? To me, this comes off as snotty and "polite trolling" (feigning taking the high ground, but not really taking the high ground).

Also, to me, the tone of this is very much "I I I, Me Me Me". It would be so flippin' easy to throw in a reference to wanting to give the FANS something great, wouldn't it? Instead its about his vision, his artistic integrity, doing right "for DC".

As I've said before - I understand the desire to reboot the DCEU. I understand that will entail moves some of the fanbase won't like. It's a tough propositon. I am simply, thus far, very much underwhelmed at the optics of how they are going about it.

It’s absolutely trolling and fighting with the fan base. Words like ‘certain’ is the sprinkles on top. Gunn is setting the tone of his tenure at DC.

Can you imagine Rian Johnson talking like this to Star Wars fans?

If only, although then I’d have to read a bunch of tedious special pleading all over the forum rather than just this thread.

Well, there are fans who have sent him death threats, told him to kill himself, and actively told him they hope the movies fail because they're so distraught over the Snyderverse ending. Maybe those? Just a thought.

And you know what? That kind of stuff, awful as it is, happens to every major media figure involved in social media, especially those where people are passionate. I don't think Gunn can possibly find that surprising.

Maybe I'm a bit snarky today, sorry. But, to me, here's what happens, again and again. Some fans don't like the direction a franchise takes. They express themselves. A percentage of people who are either truly angry or who are just trolls post some vile stuff. Those in charge of the franchise address the vile fringe, or claim to be, but in a way that at least leaves the door open that they're talking about everyone who disagrees with them -- although usually they leave enough wiggle room to deny that is what they are doing, so they can feign surprise when they get push back. They say things like "Some people out there just can't accept change, and think they can intimidate us, well...blah blah blah". They then use that "some" to dance around it if they get enough negative push-back -- "Hey, I never said that EVERYONE who is critical was out of line".

I think that's tiresome and divisive and bad business. I just wish those running these franchises would count to 100 and stop fighting with the fans - although again, they'd argue they are "just fighting with the awful people". I especiall ywish that was the case here. Rebooting the DCEU was always going to be tricky; no reason to add to the drama by squabbling with what you claim is a "certain minority" of those who disagree with you.

Fisher's complaint isn't even really coherent or rooted in reality. He's claiming that James Gunn deleted Tweets where he was acting as an apologist for Joss Whedon's conduct on the set of Justice League. First, that's just plum not what happened - Gunn liked a Tweet by Alan Tudyk where Tudyk said he couldn't imagine the reports are true, and later apologized for liking the Tweet when he lacked a full understanding of what happened. The Tweet where he apologized has since been deleted because... Gunn sets his Tweets to autodelete after a set period of time, and this was several years ago.

Telling someone to kill yourself because you're just oh-so-mad at the direction of *checks notes* a franchise about characters who put on colourful costumes and punch people in other colourful costumes doesn't make you a passionate fan, it makes you a piece of ****. Full stop, end of sentence. There's no excusing that by saying they're "passionate". I frankly think Gunn's statement was incredibly measured and respectful, and no, I don't really see his as leaving wiggle room open to dismiss anyone who's skeptical, upset or just plain disinterested. If that's the way it's coming across, I'd chalk that up to projection.

The funny thing is, you could make the argument that he shouldn't respond because it's just some people. Not worth the effort. But those reading his response are also just some people.

Now if websites can stop selling what people tweet as news, then we'd be getting somewhere.

I've seen people online saying that Snyder should've gotten one more attempt to get the DCEU right, but I feel like the Snyder-verse has been given a zillion chances to right the ship over the years. These movies have been going on since 2013 and every movie was an attempt/hope that the Snyder-verse would improve but with the exception of the first Wonder Woman, every entry in the Snyder-verse was just as crappy as the last one. It actually got WORSE after Man of Steel. Man of Steel was as good as it got, (which wasn't that great) and it just went downhill after that, aside from the aforementioned WW.

How many more Snyder-verse movies would've been enough before Snyder-verse fans would've been okay with a reboot? These movies were like the movie version of energy drinks and I've had my fill.

I'm someone who still thinks MoS is the best Superman movie (what can I say? I hate Charlatan Clark, Real Estate Mogul Lex, Turning Back Time, and Lois the flighty damsel in distress, and love Cavill as Clark, Shannon as Zod and some of Goyer's takes on Post-Crisis Superman.)

...But I also think that yeah, more Snyder was the issue on a storytelling level. I think he was a perfectly acceptable directing choice *if someone else is overseeing and editing the scripts and stories,* and that the first thing that probably was a red flag in hindsight was dropping Goyer's script for BvS - not because Goyer himself is a guarantee of quality, since Blade: Trinity is still very much a thing, but because it wound up resulting in Snyder being the storyteller for the films... aaaaand Snyder's one of the many, many, many directors who's sort of a good argument for ignoring auteur theory.

    In RL, no.
I love aspects. The first WW and Shazam are some of my favorite CBMs. But I don't know anyone whose voice I've ever actually heard who is a fan of the universe as a whole.

    This is the way.

It has some fantastic sequences alongside moments of total arse.
