Was the Artist that made the statue of liberty mocking us?

This is kind of a weird theory I have... but I have always wondered if the artist that designed the statue of liberty was giving us crap in a way.

From what I understand France sent us the Statue of liberty as a gift... but I wonder if the artist made the huge statue out of copper like American pennies and knowing that it would tarnish green.

Now American pennies are copper.. and they also tarnish green.. so my theory is that the artist was doing that as somekind of knock because we are a capatalist country.

Isn't France more of a socialist country? Were they a socialist country at the time they sent us the Statue of liberty?

Were our pennies copper at that time even? I don't know.

Just something I have always wondered about.

I know its an odd theory... but artists do that kind of thing. It's part of what makes art fun.

I mean it doesn't even have to be a mocking thing. I am just curious if he chose copper because we are a capatalist country and because our pennies were copper at the time.

Actually, that green color is generally considered beautiful. That's why people still make things out of untreated copper even though methods exist to keep it from oxidizing.

 

America wasn't the only capitalist country at the time, so.. I dunno. I think you're clutching at straws.

 

They were. They hate us, and since they are too cowardly to do anything, they just mock us with copper gifts.

 

They gave a 100 foot copper statue of a rabbit to the Nazis in 1938 as an appeasement gift. That mockingly went yellow.

Not many people know that.

I think the statue of liberty is really a nuclear bomb that the artist got from the future and it is set to go off probably any day now, and the copper turning green activated the timer.

 

That is exactly what I was saying... the Statue of liberty is a nuclear bomb. Because the french hate America so much.

I just hought it would be an interesting gag by an artist.

I am an artist myself and I have seen a lot of little inside jokes by artists before.

Think of it like Lucas putting little inside jokes inside the Star Wars films.

Good theory, but I think the only reason they made it out of copper is because it was cheap.

That's why copper is our metal of choice to make electrical wiring and pennies with!

 

As someone just said, I'm fairly sure the reason for copper was because it's cheap. I mean what did you expect them to make it out of, gold?

 

So it wasn't an inside joke... the French are just cheap bastards... I knew it! lol I kid...

There are a lot of cheap metals though.

We don't make our wiring out of copper because it is cheap though. We use it because it is a great conductor of electricity. But we don't use gold because it is so expensive.

I had another genius revelation! Not only is the statue made of copper... and turns an ugly green... but that ugly green is the same color as our dollar bill! Ah ha!

Were our dollar bills green then as well? lol
