As a little fella I remember seeing the commercials for Watership Down and thinking, "OH! Bunnies!"

Was I ever in for a shocker.

Guys guys guys...don't talk about the movie. The movie is crap compared to the book! Watership Down has been one of my favorite books since I was eleven. I also read PLague Dogs...that's just a sick sick story, I don't recomend it.

Watership down is a good book. Conne, have you ever read any of the redwall series by Brian Jaques? If you loved Watership Down, i am sure you'd love the redwall books.

They are one of my favorite book series ever. Mattimeo, the 3rd one he wrote is my favorite book. They are more upbeat than Watership down.

I have seen the movie and read the book, btw.

I have read the book but I haven't seen the movie. In fact, I wasn't aware of a Watership Down movie. :( When was it released? Animation or live action?

EDIT: Nevermind. I found about it on IMDb (d'oh!). Now I have to find a copy. :)

I used to read Redwall, actually I was a fan for a while.

My problem with Redwall was it seemed like everything was way to black and white. I mean it was almost charactatured (sp?). You had the stoats, foxes, rats, etc, and they were ALWAYS evil without a shred of decency in them.

Then you had the mice, squirrels, hares, etc, and they were all kind and wonderful and perfectly good all the time.

This started to annoy me to no end. I know every once in a while Jaques would vary his black/white theme, but not nearly often enough.

You know it's funny, so many people say Watership Down was a depressing or dark book. But I have never found it to be either, yet I find 1984, Animal Farm and the PLague Dogs to be unbearable.

Watership down for me, although haven't seen The Plague of Dogs.

But back to Watership down, that film was very distressing when I watched it as a kid but that's what made it different to all the disney animations etc.
Plus John Hurt is brilliant :)

I watched the movie when I was like six. Am I the only one who wasn't scarred by it as a child?

Watership Down... a 500 page book about bunny rabbits.

Loved Bigwig. "They'd never figure out which Mark to put him in- he's got them all!"

^*paraphrased, because I haven't read it in years*

Bigwig is awesome. I liked Blackavar in the book as well. They totally trashed his character in the movie. But I named my rabbit (jet black, by the by), Blackavar, he's prolly my favorite character, though I also liked Holly, Campion, and of course, Bigwig.

Can anyone tell me what Watership Down is about? All I know is that it has rabbits in it. Is it an allegory, like Animal Farm?

I can´t really explain, but maybe this will help:

In the Sandleford warren, Fiver, a young runt rabbit who is a seer, receives a frightening vision of his warren's immenient destruction. When he and his loving brother, Hazel, fail to convince their chief of the need to evacuate; they set out on their own with a small band of others who heeded the warning and barely manage to elude the Warren's military caste. What follows is a perilous journey in which the band faces dangers of all varieties like predators, humans and even their own kind. While they eventually find a peaceful new home at Watership Down, they have new problems that will lead to a deadly conflict with the neighbouring Warren called Efrafa, which is a police state by the powerful and insane General Woundwart.

I saw it at school, can´t remember what year, but i wasn´t very old. Maybe 1982, or what year was it released as animated movie? And i remember it vaguely, but i remember i was scared. But then i read the book several times later on. And it is Brilliant
