Lucas kind of connected the beginning and end of their relationship with the pendant little Anakin gave her during the funeral scene...

It does seem a little, hmmm, hard to believe. In the OT, you have very natural looking people getting into great adventures, it's easier to relate to. You could see someone who looked like Mark Hamill on the street, he was a good looking guy, but he had a simplicity to him and that was focused on. Same goes for Carrie and Harrison, they all had a natural sense of looks about themselves. In the Prequels, you have some extremely attractive people made even MORE attractive. Face it, there's a rare chance we'll ever see a Natalie Portman out on the street, so it's even a slimmer chance we'd see a Padme Amidala type. These people are too beautiful to relate to; it's not something Lucas is guilty of, it's the times we live in. The original Star Wars was made in a different time, when there was a distinct effort to separate a film from the typical glamour that was Hollywood. The Prequels show that the line has been blurred, if not erased, and glamour has been embraced. I always found these latest installments to be very much a Hollywood project.

    Hollywood project

    [face_thinking]

I think you must be joking.

First and foremost the dialogue was nothing like Hollywood. Secondly, there was more artistry than the basic Hollywood movie, without having the typical "getting into bed after the first look" sort of thing.

I can agree glamour to a certain extent, but that was also used in the old 50's movies, with Grace Kelly, Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, etc and their leading men. Therefore not exclusively to the times we live in.

um...i dont think he was referring to the movie as a whole being Hollywood, especially since Lucas has pretty much burned his bridges there. He was referring to the casting of more outrageously attractive people as opposed to the OT

    more outrageously attractive people

Maybe I speak for myself, but I didn't find them such. O:) Unless sex gets in the way of that opinion ;)

they're all kind of generic hollywood movies, sorry, but it isn't any more 'artsy' than any dime a dozen minority report type film,

even the origionals, having relatable characters, complete with personalities, was just something they did back in the 70s and 80s, you know, back when computer graphics were so primative it would take a year to render a single wavey/blurry line[face_laugh]

...movies in the late 90s/00s have just been a little too lack luster, there's nothing that impressive about them, and they're far to bland/generic.. the new star wars unfortunaly fall into this category, as they're about as anti-hollywood as every other summer blockbuster..

A major reason of why Natalie, Jake and Hayden were cast is to do with their look.

They wanted actors who had appearances similar to Luke and Leia.

in the end i feel that natalie and hayden were chosen more for thier looks than acting ability. lucas said in an interview before aotc that they had to find a 'hunk' to play an older anakin.

OMG OMG I totally agree with you.... I still can't get over how positively HOT hayden looks in ROTS. I mean, I still liked hayden in AOTC cos he's sort of the hero in the movie and I tend to root for the hero. BUT..... after ROTS, I've gone insane over Anakin Skywalker. I've seen other pics of hayden with short hair and it all sucks. lol it just shows how important HAIR is....

Anyhow, why is it all of you think Luke and Leia aren't attractive?? Weren't they considered attractive back then?

Anyhow, I don't care if you guys think Hayden and Natalie are too attractive. I personally can't imagine anyone else playing Anakin and Padme. They are my fave PT characters and I think they look very good together....

I really don't see what you mean.
NP is pretty cute but not too attractive.
Hayden is ummmmmm well, I don't know what to say about Hayden. He did a nice job with Anakin, that's all I can say.

Having been a teenager when the OT came out, I don't remember what the guys thought about Leia, but certainly Luke was considered very attractive by the girls.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think Luke is still considered attractive by today's standards. I remember a friend asking me who I thought was more attractive and when I said Anakin, he was like "ARE YOU KIDDING?? Luke is wayyyyyyyy better looking"

As I said, I'm surprised there is even this discussion. I always thought that the whole Skywalker family (with maybe the exception of Shmi ) was good looking...

Well, concerning Shmi, I think age and the hard life took their toll. I can imagine her as a quite attraktive women at a younger age.

actually if you read the TPM novelization book they had a deeper connection and they talked a lot more and anakin did say he was going to marry her when he met her that would have been great to put in the movie but they didn't and + would you rather have it be to ugly people i thought it was great casting

you cant count the novelization or deleted scenes, because it isnt the film. I think if they made their relationship more like in the book than in the movie, it definetly would have been easier for some the audience to see it as more than an intense infatuation. But alas, they chose to keep it like they did. So even if you say 'well I dont see it as based on looks because I read the book...' thats the book, this is the movie.

in the movie, its even hard to see Anakin in AOTC saying I dreamt about you every night, Ive thought about you every day, etc. I mean seriously! In TPM, anakin did NOT act like he was in love with her, and besides the angel comments, that he even that he had a crush on her! He just acted like he thought she was a cool chick. They SHOULD have put some dialogue in it that was more like the book.

well, since you rarely see anyone who is unattractive on screen in a major role these days, i would say no.

this doesnt excuse poor acting and not having onscreen chemistry. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman had good chemisty and they are as attractive than the SW couple. actually, i can only speak about the women. Kidman is hotter than portman

I don't think they were necessarily too attractive, but i do think Anakin should have looked a little more weathered in ROTS a la Luke in ESB and ROTJ. Up until his date with the lava, he looked too much like a pretty boy. After 3 years of intense fighting, i thought he would be portrayed as an older, weathered, more mature person.

It was only three years later. The reason Luke looked that way is because he was in his thirties probably. He looked much older to me than his age. Hayden looks like that beacuse he was 23 when they started filming. But he did have that scar above his eye. That is something.

Luke was in his early 20s during ROTJ.
