Well there is some good news! :)

It does seem that China has alot of mining accidents though. They need to work on that. I mean they can learn from ours and russias mistakes in space travel but fully overlook mining standards?

Come on! Get with the program!

It is a dangerous job and always will be. Now in the coming weeks, we will see who goes to jail over this. [face_plain] American way new millenium! :)

Reports are that the dead miner is the Fireboss, Terry Helms.

I'm so glad to hear that 12 of them are alive. Hearing that carbon monoxide levels were too high to support life, I figured that they were dead. So glad to be proven wrong, but sadden that one died.

My papa was a coal miner when I was little (don't remember much of it, through, company went out of business). He's staying up much later than normal to watch this.

So glad to hear this. :)

That is wonderful news. :) I honestly wasn't optimistic they would get out alive. Thank gods that twelve of the thirteen are safe.

Call it a foolish job if you will, but at least wait until you've been in a position where you've had to put food on the table for your family. These people are hardly volunteering to go miles underground every day for their own entertainment (which should answer the question of whether they have anything "better" to do).

Couldn't they still die from an over exposure to the carbon monoxide?

Long-term complications sometimes result from severe cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, but in the majority of cases, the people begin to recover as soon as they're removed to fresh air. Hopefully all of the miners here will make a full recovery.

Stories seem to be conflicting at the moment... I'm going to hope that it isn't true. :(

ABC News is reporting that all but one of them are confirmed dead now. This is terrible. Their families were told that most of them had survived. Somebody goofed really bad.

Somehow the family members at the Church were given the impression that most of the miners had survived. The Governor even raised his thumbs up and said "miracles do happen." So they were all pretty cheerful. Then the guys in charge of the rescue operation learned about 20 minutes later that an error had occurred and that not as many survived as had been told to the families. But the worst part was that the coal mining leaders and rescue officials didn't tell the families that something was wrong with that report for another 3 hours. That's a major problem. If the initial report that got everyone so excited was not an official statement, then they weren't at fault and they should have told everyone what they had learned 20 minutes later. But they didn't.

I hope the guy who survived makes it.

^Yeah. I like how the news says 12 survived . . . but they don't mention the one that died. Guess he's not important.

Yeah. He was mentioned at the beginning of the report, but the story focused on telling how 12 survived. And now I think they learned that only one survived. It's so sad.

Dear lord, 12 died. Can't imagine what the families are going through, especially since they were initially told that they had survived. [face_plain] :(

The false news about survivors spread quickly after people overheard cell phone calls, Hatfield said. In reality, rescuers had only confirmed finding 12 miners and were checking their vital signs. But what began to leak out to anxious family members was that 12 miners had been discovered alive.

    Just read that on Yahoo.

But even still, within 20 minutes of that false news spreading, the officials knew that data was wrong. They just didn't know how wrong. But they didn't tell anyone for another 3 hours. That was a mistake.

I keep thinking about the families. To hear that 12/13 made it, and then to hear that it's more like 1/13. To be emotionally brought up like that and then to learn the truth is just...not good psychologically.
