August 6, 1995: Cal Ripken, Jr breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak. I have that game on video cassette.

Im surprised it wasnt mentioned, it was the most signifacnt moment in baseball since Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth's homerun record.

You're absolutely right. After the strike, fans were still pretty bitter and Cal brought them all back single-handedly. An outstanding moment from an outstanding athlete and human being.

I actually think Jack Buck had the better call for that game:

"This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable!"

I must respectfully disagree. For one, Vin is part of the Dodgers. Jack Buck was announcing for a national audience but Vin knew (knows) how to talk to a Dodgers fan.

Next, "this is gonna be a home run" is not all that original. Vin's unrehearsed call was much more poetic, eloquent and creative.

    Vin is the man.

    December 21, 2000:

The Mariners give up Alex Rodrigez as a free agent to the Texas Rangers who pay him 252 million dollars. "Alex is the player we believe will allow this franchise to fulfill its dream of continuing on its path to becoming a World Series champion," Rangers owner Tom Hicks

    Mariner's Record since losing A-Rod: 217-121

    Ranger's Record since signing A-Rod: 151-187

Anytime A-Rod gets booed at Safeco Feild, it goes on my greatest moments list.

I always thought that Wade Boggs hitting a home run to get his 3,000th hit was a great moment. What a great way to hit 3,000.

Well, I don't know how much rehearsing Jack Buck had either :). Vin Scully is always synonymous with Dodger baseball, and that alone makes his call memorable.

I just found Buck's call to be a bit more emotional, but that's just me, and I realize that's definitely not the predominant feeling among fans. The complete call was, I think, "Fly ball to right field... This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! The Dodgers have won the game 5-4; I don't believe what I just saw!"

But, I have to bow to the Dodgers fan(s) here and agree that Scully's call is the better known and perhaps more memorable of the two :).

for me, there are 2 moments that are my absolute favorites:

    1) Kirk Gibson homerun in 1988 World Series: it happend right on my birthday! sure it was my 2nd birthday, but according to my parents, after Gibson hit the home run, i was jumping up & down in front of the TV. anyway, the fact that it happend on my birthday is just so damn cool! i have the offical '88 series video, & whenever i see that Gibson home run, i always get chills.

    2) Robert Horry's game winning 3 pointer in game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals: that 3 pointer saved the Lakers from being eliminated from the playoffs last year! if Horry hadn't made that shot, the Lakers would have been down 3-1 going into Arco for game 5, there was no way they would have been able to win in that situation. Horry's 3 almost is as awesome as Kirk Gisbon's homerun, i say almost because the '88 Dodgers didn't have 2 championships in the 2 years before like the Lakers did last year.

KW, watching the yankmees lose is always a great moment.

    I agree wholeheartedly. :)

My most memorable moment is, without a doubt, October 28, 1995. It was my 12th birthday, but it was spent in front of the television as my Atlanta Braves beat the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series. :D :D :D

"1989 MLB ALCS game 3: Earth Quake just before the start of the game"

    That was the World Series.

1989 - Mitch Williams striking out the last batter to have the Cubs clinch the division title.

1987 - at the gramps' house, my great aunt and uncle visit asked if we'd heard what had happened in the Cubs' game that day. A big fight broke out when Andre Dawson was pegged in the face by a wild pitch.

We were taking a long car ride and listening to Cubs' game on the radio. My dad was becoming a bit excited at the events during the game. Looking back, I'm thinking it was June 23, 1984.

What I'd do to get my hands on video footage of the Chicago Cubs from the 1984 season! I was just becoming a fan at the end of the season.

I've heard both calls, but im a bit biassed, Vin's call was better. I grew up listening to vin call games and am listening to him call a game right now. It was bad when LA lost chick and its gonna be alot worse when we lose vin.

Game 7 of the 2001 World Series is the most memorable sporting moment of my life, and really one of the best moments of my life. After so many years of heartbreak for Arizona sports teams, the Diamondbacks captured the World Series in a scintillating 3-2 Game 7 win over the Yankees. Aside from being a memorable game in itself, finally experiencing a hometown championship was unforgettable in all the best ways.

That was a great moment in sports indeed!

A great moment for me personally was only sports related. My mother used to sing at the NFL Pro Bowl cocktail party after the game (years ago) It was for players and officials only. My brothers and I were the only kids there so we always got a bunch of autographs.
While signing my book, the great Joe Montana lost hold of his drink and spilled it over my head. It was awesome! :)

    --- Richard Petty's 200th victory
Back when racing at Daytona was truely racing. Door-handle to door-handle with Cale Yarborough the last 1000 feet to the finish line, beating him by less than half a foot.

--- Kurt Gibson's game winning home run
A lot has already been said, but being a Dodger fan growing up in the South (aka Braves country) that one was especially sweet. Sadly, I no longer follow baseball. It's not the same game it once was.

--- The Tennessee Volunteers winning the 1998 National Champioship
Finishing the season a perfect 13-0, it was best summed up as time expired in the game by Vols play-by-play announcer John Ward, "Ladies and gentlemen, the 1998 National Champion is clad in BIG ORANGE."

--- Emmitt Smith breaking Walter Payton's all time NFL rushing record
Another great football play-by-play man, The Dallas Cowboys radio network's Brad Sham, "Move over Sweetness, and make a place for Emmitt."

--- Richard Petty taking the lead at Talladega, July 1992
At almost 200 mph, the Famous 43 was out front one last time, alone in front of a pack of 42 other cars, in his final race at Talladega.

--- The Dallas Cowboys win Super Bowl XXVII
Perhaps the most dominating performance by one team in Super Bowl history. Again, Brad Sham, "And the Buffalo Bills have been buried in an avalanche of Blue and Silver."

--- Lance Armstrong wins the Tour de France, then again, then again, and yet again
And he'll go for 5 in a row this summer. And to think at one time doctors just gave him only months to live.

--- Richard Petty wins his 7th Daytona 500
Petty ran far behind the leaders in 6th place before the final series of green flag pit stops. The King took fuel only after leaders Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt, Buddy Baker, and Ricky Rudd all stopped for fuel and 2 right side tires. Petty left the pits with a 10 second lead, but the other drivers thought for sure they would run him down on the older tires. Allison's Pontiac had appeared unbeatable all week at Daytona. "Everybody was accusing me of sandbagging all week," Allison said. "Well, they better look for somebody else now ... the No. 1 sandbagger of all time ... that man in the No. 43. Maybe I didn't figure on him, either."

--- The North Carolina Tarheels win the 1982 NCAA basketball championship
In probably the greatest NCAA championship game ever played, Dean Smith's Tarheels oulasted John Thompson's Georgetown Hoyas in a match up of 2 college powerhouses of phenomenal proportions. It was also the first time America was introduced to a basketball player named Michael Jordan; who hit the winning shot to put the 'Heels up with only seconds left to play.

Not really a single moment, but..

June 19, 1988. Lakers vs Pistons. Game 6. NBA championship.

Isaiah Thomas scores 25 points in the third quarter with a badly sprained ankle. One of the single best and most inspiring performances in NBA history.

Kirk Gibson's homerun in the 1988 World Series, not just because it was a memorable moment, but I was actually at the game and even just thinking about now, it feels as if it just happened.

Mine'll probably sound limited since it's just from my favorite teams/players, but they are what's most memorable to me personally.

-49ers Super Bowl in '94 - Have that whole season on tape. Great offense (Young, Rice, Watters, et al), great defense (Stubblefield, Young, Deion, Hanks), "the monkey off my back" and passing/scoring records for Young, more records for Rice, a score in the opening minutes ... just a great game.

-Steve Young's last great play with the 49ers vs. Green Bay - The only time Young beat the Pack, after Favre had made one of his patented comeback scores, Young almost fell down on his drop back after taking the snap, looked around, rifled one in 25 yards to Owens who held on when hit by three defenders at once. Game winner.

-Bryant Young's broken leg - Happened on Monday night several years back, just about as bad as it gets (like Theismann). Ouch.

-Pete Sampras winning his last (out of 14 or so) Grand Slam against Agassi - You just knew you were watching history, two of the greats but Pete staking his last claims to the tennis legend he is.

-Notre Dame over Florida State, 1993 ... and 2002 - The first time I remember pretty well, hoping for that national championship (before we ran into BC), and this past year the defensive effort was so outstanding, breaking the game open in the third quarter, it made me proud to see my team back again in such exciting, decisive fashion (before we killed ourselves against BC again).

While signing my book, the great Joe Montana lost hold of his drink and spilled it over my head.

    Très cool.

Thank you for reminding me of a moment that I completely forgot, but definitely deserves to be mentioned.

I'll always remember Andre Agassi's 1999 French Open win against Andrei Medvednev, after being down two sets to none. Unforgettable, and it staked Agassi's own claim as one of the greatest players ever by winning a career Grand Slam.

I would have to say watching Mark Mcgwire's 70th homerun. That was awsome just to be there, and feel the roars and cheers of the crowd... watching Mcgwire salute the fans, flashbolts blazing... it felt like the place was about to explode! There's just no words to describe my feelings and what I felt that day; it was magic... it's a feeling I'll never forget.
