Star Wars (Been a fan since 77 but you'd never know from my not even 7 year old account here) Italian genre movies Apple tech Old school Death Metal American exploitation & genre films from the 60s - 80s Vegetables Graphic & Industrial Design & Illustration British Humor
Mine are somewhat more recurring mini-obsessions, as I never seem to be able to get around to doing an actual "deep dive" into any of them but instead just periodically have a period of several days to several weeks' worth of revisiting mostly the same stuff I'm already familiar with about the obsession (case in point: for a self-described near-life-long Beatles lover, it's ridiculous how much I don't know about them) That said, the main ones are: the Beatles/John Lennon, the Cure/Robert Smith, U2, Blade Runner, Nolan's Batman films, Sex and the City, and Seinfeld. oh, and the Senate thread on US Politics
Great Scott, where to begin? There's always an ongoing maelstrom of perennial obsessions with me. A few have fallen away, while others have continued on and off for decades. Cultish cultural media and detailed worlds are the biggest draws for me. Star Wars (natch), although that's been rather low-key since the Disney buyout. The new RPG was keeping me going, but I've lost interest in it. Marvel Comics, specifically the X-Men. I'm currently going through a catalog of my collection, despite the futility of it Interactive fiction and adventure games, from Zork to Monkey Island. I've been working on my own for years now. Writing - I've been working on writing for decades, which becomes inextricably linked together Cthulhu Mythos - the stories of Lovecraft and his literary descendants, plus the Call of Cthulhu RPG, which has been around almost as long as I have Classic Dungeons and Dragons, specifically the campaign settings of Greyhawk and Planescape. Not much is coming out to support them in recent years, although WOTC did put on the Saltmarsh campaign book this year with new Greyhawk information. Discworld - Even with Terry Pratchett's death, there's a ton of material, including very detailed sourcebooks - plus, the new Discworld TV show coming up. Sherlock Holmes - The granddaddy of obsessions. I take a deep-dive into the stories every once in a while, having two complete sets of annotated editions. Dune - Ignoring the new material, having the super-rare Dune Encyclopedia keeps me returning again and again. MST3K - Was greatly excited by the revival. Currently watching all the episodes in order, in the middle of Season 10 Twin Peaks - Obsessed with the show and movie back in the day, the revival of the series brought me back into it again Shadowrun - One of the oldest continuing RPGs, with a hyper-detailed setting. Game of Thrones - Books only, not the show. Twilight: 2000 - Obscure late 80s RPG with a detailed setting of a WW III. TORG - Obscure early 90s RPG that had a recent revival, where different realities invade Earth. Star Trek - Much lesser extent than Star Wars, although recently they've been on about the same level. Excited by the recent releases of the new Star Trek Encyclopedia and the latest rendition of the maps of the Star Trek universe, plus Picard. Deadlands - RPG, mostly about the Wild West with ghosts, mad scientists, demons, magic, etc. That's probably the tip of the iceberg, really. I didn't get into the movies I watch again and again, or musical obsessions.
Hunting. I don't want to boast but let's just say there are a lot of dead cows in greater London. (Synthesizers - I have owned over 40 this past couple of decades).
I revisit shows every once in a while usually alternating between classic 'Simpsons' and 'Seinfeld'. Generally though I cycle through various eras of horror films. Sometimes I go on a big Hammer kick and sometimes I'll revisit some of the 80's cheese but most of the time I stick to the tried and true Golden Age of the 30's/40's
And ... Gatchaman, Asian cinema especially Shaw Brothers and Kaiju things, Comics, Cats, Birds, Pizza, and Shrimp.
Pokemon (the video games, never got into TCG or the manga/anime) If I'm researching a bit of history or science for my lesson planning, I'll usually get sucked into a hole. My most recent one was researching Queen Victoria's childhood, although I also did a ton of research into the domestication of the dog as part of my class' stone age topic back in November. Pirates (of the Caribbean)- the first 3 are up there in my go to feel good movies. Simpsons- was into that before Star Wars, now I have Disney+ I'm rewatching all of them. The Goon Show- a strange BBC comedy radio show that influenced the members of Monty Python. You can only really appreciate it though if you have a very particular sense of humour. One that appreciates really stupid gags. (Star Wars- near constant)
Have to add 2001: A Space Odyssey to my list of recurring obsessions. Hadn't watched it in several years until a couple of weeks ago and if anything, the power of its impact on me only seems to increase with every rewatch. Been keeping the feeling going by listening to 2001 related YT videos and old BBC podcasts while doing chores around the house. Also in scanning some earlier posts in this thread, an item on Ken's August 2019 list stood out: Ahead of the curve as always!
Star Wars Baseball Football Movies Travel History & Geography (Give me a good map and I'm happy for hours) Television (Rerun Junky - Classic Trek, Stargate, Sitcoms, PBS) Books (Modern Scifi / Classic Anything) Vintage Video Games (Hasn't been a good new game in a decade) Boardgames Role-Playing Games ------------ Obsessions ebb and flow...most of these have ebbed at present...spent too much time with my obsessions during lockdown...except travel...and I need money for that...and/or cheaper gas.
