If a person is on fire as Anakin was, the fire should continue until it is put out or until there is nothing left to burn. As it was, there was nothing to stop Anakin from burning after the burning had begun. Reasonably, he should have burned until there was nothing left of him. His skin and hair were burned off, but internal flesh and organs were intact. This was necessary for the story, of course, because Darth Vader had an important role to play in the original STAR WARS Trilogy, but what stopped Anakin from burning up completely (perhaps the Dark Side of the Force?) is a curiosity.

In my estimation, the physics of Star Wars were never meant to be understood. I'd just let it go. :p

Seriously, I think Anakin unwittingly stopped it with the Force.

I'd like to know how the burning caused him to need a breathing machine?

I could see if he had his chest caved in or something, but just because he was on fire I dont think that would have caused him to need new lungs.

Well, he was right at the edge of the lava, so I'm assuming he inhaled really bad fumes and whatnot. Those fumes from the smoke probably burned his lungs.

I actually wondered about that the very first time I saw the movie. The best I could guess is that he managed to flop around a bit, rolling it out.

Man, what a way to go. [face_plain]
Hope nothing like that ever happens to me (already a pyrophobe).

Flesh isn't flamable, hair is though, as well as clothing. So the answer is quite simple. His hair and clothes all burned away until there was nothing left to actualy hold the flame.

As for his metallic lung...I'd have to say that being on fire wouldn't cause it, but the smoke and fumes he inhaled would. Now Obi-Wan was down there too, but not for as long as Anakin was and not as far down. Anakin was face down, breathing in dirt as well as those fumes and crap I'm sure that did something.

His clothes burned away, as did his hair, so there was nothing flammable left on his body.

He may have rolled. Like the part when the emperor comes, you see him land his ship, then anakin rolls over on his back.
