Usually at my school when a guy asks you out, it's equivalent to: do you want to be my girlfriend?
It's not like...do you want to go out to a movie sometime or whatever.
But what does it mean to you?

Anyway, a boy "asked me out" on Wednesday. Yay me!

    Going out-boyfriend gf
out to the movies-date..and if you want to go on more then you're dating each other. This should be done before 'going out'

One date, no commitments. If anything grows out of that fine, but going from zero to bf/gf is unrealistic.

It means that you two are an item.

If someone were to ask you on a date, they'd be like "hey wanna go do something.." with a hint of a hopefullness or something.

I consider it a date, but it doesn't mean you're "going steady" or even seeing each other. You just went out. However, if you continue to "see eadch other", then you're just "seeing each other", or "talking".

Going out is just a bit more than friendship but is still open.

Dating is further than that and is generally exclusive. It also includes the sexual favors.

I find that the phrase "going out" changes with age. In middle and high school "going out" is being someone's girlfriend/Boyfriend. When you hit college and older, "going out" is like yeah were seeing each other but not exculsively. I find that "seeing each other" is synonomism with "we're sleeping together" but not in dating relationship. It's weird how words change with your age. [face_thinking]

Yay, Jen! I am so happy for you. :)

In high school it did seem like "going out" meant that people were boyfriend/girlfriend. In college it seems like people aren't really bf/gf until they have been going out for a while and have had some conversations about it.

Well, if everytime I heard "Want to go see a movie?" from a boy meant I was dating him, I've have a ton of boyfriends. I think it depends on the context.

It means opening the door to get a whiff of fresh air once the smell inside the room becomes unbearable.

    Congrats, Yane.

To me, it means you are now in a relationship, and I think that is the popular view. But not everyone thinks the same, I know.

    Congrats!

And to me, it means going out. I guess there are a few cases when 'do you want to go to a movie/get a bite to eat' means simply as friends, but rarely does it mean that. Like... a friend asked me if I wanted to 'go out and get something to eat' in Jan, and he meant it like he said. He has a girlfriend, I live an entire continent and an ocean away from him (he's in CA, I'm in Germany) and we don't really have any interest in each other. So it was obvious how he meant it. Had it been someone different, who I didn't know as well, then the words would have had a different meaning- ie, he would have been asking me on a date.

Complicated, I know. *grins* But basically, go with the definition of dating, in a relationship, whatever. Just be aware that there are occasionally times when it means something different- but you can usually be pretty sure of those.
