What Happened to R2?

there might be a post about this already but i couldnt find one so WHat happened to all of R2-D2's little gadgets and gizmos like the jet packs and all those modifications anakin did on him?did he get remodificated by Bail or something cuz all he does in the classics is stick that thing in the wall and hack into the computer systems.

 

My guess is that after 20+ years, his equipment began to short out and most of his equipment didn't function as well. In addition, Anakin was no longer around to "tinker" and modify R2's gadgets. In response to the eventual point that 13 years had passed between EP1 and EP3, you must remember that R2 spent most of those years as Padme's droid, most likely living a simple "life".

 

well after ep3 he went to Alderan, so i guess that they had him modified...which is a shame really, because ROTS r3 totally rules

 

I don't think that he ever had to use them in the OT. In ROTS, he used the jetpacks and lightning only when he was in direct danger. He wasn't really in this situation in the OT. Except on Dagobah when he got eaten (and quickly spit out). Don't forget that he still shot out the lightsaber for Luke on Tatooine. I consider that to be an modification.

I think that's true. And I think that in the story the jawas damaged most of R2's systems...

 

Just watch Lucas add little digital booster jets to TESB when R2 is spit out of the swamp by the swamp monster...

LUCAS: Well, you see...this is how I always envisioned it. I always thought that R2 should have little rockets that help him fly from the swamp. But see, in 1980 that wasn't possible. Now, thanks to digital technology, I am able to go back and make this scene more like the way I always envisioned it. My saga is complete now.

R2 had the stuff in the OT. He just never had to use it.

 

He does have a few of the gadgets. He uses his little periscope in the pile Super battle droids in ROTS, and in the water in ESB. He uses his little lightning shocker in ROTJ and ROTS.

 

Official reason: R2 never had to be in combat or save someone from being burned to death.

Unofficial reason: Technology not available.

He used his internal sump pump to remove mud on degobah.

But let's be real, they couldn't do those tricks when the original trilogy came out. You have to suspend disbelief a little bit when thinking about these movies.

He uses that Electrocuter in the OT and the PT, so there is at least one continued devise. And, if I'm not mistaken, he uses more stuff in the Yuuzhan Vong books when attacked.

 

When in the OT has R2 had to use his rockets, or any of his other gadgets? There's a time and place for everything, and the OT wasn't it.

Consistant with what? Where in the OT are we led to believe that R2 doesn't have this technology?
