I'm new & not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere.
My question concerns a possible "loose end" at the end of episode 6. During the attack on the Death Star the Imperial Star Destroyers were not engaged with rebel forces. "Only the fighters are attacking" (Lando).
The rebel fleet engaged the Star Destroyers but disengaged once Lando & (was it Wedge?) set the Death Star on it's way to destruction. I'm assuming the bulk of the Star Destroyers were intact even after the Death Star's demise. Yet, the story suggests the Death Star's destruction was the end of the conflict.
Therefore, my question is, what happened to the Imperial Fleet?

It became scattered because their leader was lost. Various high ranking officers attempted to take over the remnants, and engaged the Rebellion in combat. However, without a leader they were defeated over the years. Various people took charge for a while (most notably Thrawn), but they were always defeated. For a more in-depth answer, see the Lit Forum. :)

Yeah, I always wondered about that too, as it seems like by the time Wedge and Lando exit the DSII, the a sizeable portion of the Rebel fleet is already creating a perimeter. I assume the rest of the Star Destroyers probably fled ot were just plain confused after the death of Palpatine, just like Sauron's minions after his demise.

We are talking about the portion of the imperial fleet that was present at the Battle of Endor right?

I assume the remaining star destroyers fled. Lets recap. The Death Star was destroyed, along with the Executor. That's enough to lower a navy's morale. We also saw one star destroyer completely blow up. We can also imagine a few other star destroyers were destroyed off camera. After all this the Rebel fleet was pretty strong still so I am guessing they fled. The most logical place to go would be Coruscant right? Did they go there?

If memory serves, on the approach to Endor, when Luke senses Vader is on one of the Superstar Destroyers, Solo makes the statement "Relax, there are a lot of command ships". I always assumed he was referring to the huge Superstar Destroyers, as if there were several of them. Again, I'm assuming here and perhaps you guys & gals who are far more versed in this stuff than I am would know; but if there were several Superstar Destroyers present, that would mean there must have been numerous of the "regular" star destroyers (I think they are referred to as "local bulk cruisers" in ANH). My point in all this is, there is no way (it appears to me) the rebel fleet could have dealt with a force that large, even with the resulting confusion with the demise of DSII.
For twenty years now I've always thought it was an oversight on the part of Lucas so I asked to question to see if there was something I missed.

Whatever you want. If you believe the fleet was destroyed at Endor than it was, but if not it wasn't. The answer you seek is ultimatly what you want it to be. ;)

If you just want to extrapolate from the films, you could assume that what was left of the fleet fell under the control of the Alliance/New Republic.

All in all, 8 of the Star Destroyers at Endor were destroyed in that battle. Two were captured by the Alliance. The remaining 17 ships fled to fight another day.

Such a question inevitably points to the EU. If you're not an EU fan then its all pure speculation.

Ultimatly, the rebels win in RoTJ. So either the Imperials bounce or get destroyed.

All of the Star Destroyers were blown up by the rebels. They didn't attack because the emperor ordered them not to. And they didn't flee because they were ordered to keep the rebels from escaping. But when the emperor was killed and the Death Star was destroyed there was no one to order them to do anything else,so they were sitting ducks.

Didn't Pellaeon assume command and order the remainder of the Imperial Fleet to regroup at Annaj?
