Link to the fanfiction read by me, as an audiobook of sorts (with sound effects):

Those closest to you are capable of hurting you the most.

This fan fiction was not easy to get right, first i had to settle on the specific timeline in which it occurs.

I couldn't place it between episode 3 and rebels simply because in rebels, ahsoka is not aware that Vader is Anakin.

I mean she suspects it eventually and sure, she is in denial but Rex surely would have told her this so if Rex met Vader before rebels

And found out that it was Anakin, it just would not make logical sense.

I did really want rex to find out about what happened to anakin in this narrative for emotional impact. So i setteled on the timeline

Between rebels and episode 4. Enough with my ramblings tho, i hope you enjoy.

    --------------

The very moment Rex saw Zzra's expression, he knew what has happened. Noone said a word, there was nothing to say. Not a first.

With his eyes narrowed, holding back tears, rex turned around and started walking at a quickened pace. He wasn't thinking at this point.

He just needed to get away from everyone.

    "Rex! Wait!" - Ezra shouted.

He did not have it in him to face anyone right now, luckly laast garazeb orrelos interrupted young ezra bridger.

    "let him be kid."

    Rex kept on walking.

Chopper base wasn't very big so it didn't take him long to reach his private quarters. He closed the doors and sat on his bunk bed.

He wanted to cry but he would not. Not because he was ashamed. He was a solider and lost so many brothers in the clone war,

His present emotions were all to familar.

Tears were beyond him at this point.

He sat, alone with his thoughts, entrapped. So many memories passed through. He remembered.

An hour or so passed, time mattered little to him now, though these last few moments felt like an eternity.

The room's buzzer hummed and he quickly got up, only saying: "Enter". The words barely came out of his mouth, soft and hallow.

Ezra entered the room and sat next to Rex. After a short pause he added.

"I am sorry. It was my fault".

"No it wasn't." - Rex interrupted the kid. If anyone was to blame it was him. He had a bad feeling about Malachor from the get-go.

He spoke to Ahsoka shortly before they departed and she seemed... off. He knew her well and rarely seen her in such a distressed state.

He should never have let her go alone.

They sat in silence for a little while. Ezra finally proclaimed:

"She made it count, you know."

"She... always did." "Tell me how." - Rex sounded more determined than ever, his voice much harsher.

"We found Maul on Malachor.. Hes a...."

Before Ezra could continue, Rex interrupted him, surprise in his voice.

    "You found who?"

    "You know Maul"?

"I do. We captured him with Ahsoka during the Siege of Mandalore." Ezra looked confused.

"It was a battle druing the Clone Wars. At the end of war." - Rex clarified.

"Well, I think he's dead, for what its worth."

Rex looked at him and sighed. "Maybe. It doesn't really matter does it."

Ezra didn't respond. After a while he added. "I think Vader is dead too."

Rex's eyes opened wide and he asked Ezra "What?! That Sith Lord you and Ahsoka spoke of? He was there?!"

"Yeah...". Ezra continued. "Ahsoka...". He started sobbing but kept on going. "She... sacrificed herself. So we could escape."

Once again they sat in silence for a while and finally Rex said: "Thank you." "For telling me."

    --------------

Rex knew that his mission was folly and that by now Malachor was probably crawling with imperials. He had no choice though. Noone was with him and noone knew what he was about to do, they would have tried to stop him if he told them.

As he entered the Chorlan sector, he braced himself for the ship's comm to buzz. He was prepared. He knew the all the imperial protocols. Heck, he invented some of them.

Nothing though, the comms remained silent. Strange, he thought. No matter, he began the descent into Malachor's atmosphere.

The planet was barren and lifeless, with nothing of significance in sight. Rex entered the coordinates that he obtained from the Phantom and quickly noticed something. A TIE figther was soaring above, on an auto pilot from the looks of it. The imperials were here after all.

Just below the ship, there seemed to be an opening in the ground. He steered the ship into it and saw an enormous structure below. With no sunlight coming through, he could barely see anything. He had no choice, he had to settle the ship down.

    --------------

Rex approached the structure on foot, corpses seemed to be everywhere, most of them ancient but not all. He saw a carcass of an unknown creature. He carefully approached it, inspecting the dismanteled body. He'd recognize it anywhere. A lightsaber cut.

Could it be? Could Ahsoka be alive? He dared not to hope but kept on walking towards the massive structure. Ezra told Rex that upon their escape, a massive explosion engulfed the entire temple. Now, he could make out massive chunks of the temple scattered everywhere.

Suddenly he felt an enormous pain in his left arm, something gnawing at his armor. He pulled his already unholstered blaster pistol as quickly as he could, firing a deadly volley at the attacker. The creature let out a howl that sent shivers down his spine and shortly thereafter gasped falling where it stood.

A few seconds latter, Rex could see at least a dozen such creatures rushing at him. He braced himself, there was no way he could take them all down.

This is it - he thought.

Something unimaginable happend though. All the creatures got lifted off the ground. Without thinking he kept on blasting, using the situation to his advantage.

    Smoldering corpses laid everywhere.

    And then, he froze.

A dark figure stood in front of him, clad in a black suit. The figure's helmet seemed to have been damaged, slicled in half.

Rex could not believe his eyes.

I love the idea of this kind of fic. Rex is an interesting character, and him meeting Vader would be pretty fascinating to see. Unfortunately I haven't seen Rebels so I'm not sure I have any feedback in terms of the timeline. I think my main piece of advice is the fic gets stronger as it goes along - the longer paragraphs which give us more focus into the mind and thoughts of the characters we're looking at are better than the shorter, sentence-long paragraphs which end up reading as pretty choppy.

    Looking forward to more!

Excellent POV of Rex. Fascinating idea, him encountering Vader. [face_thinking] If there is any chance that Ahsoka survived and they meet up again, [face_dancing]
