    I stand corrected.

But, still wasn't the name Emperor Palpatine then on the Collectible figure that came out for ROTJ?

I agree that Palpatine should remain just that.

Wasn't the name "Palpatine" used in the A New Hope novelization. I think it was in the prologue way back in 77.

I've heard the name Cos used. I think it was in the Star Wars trivial pursuit game.

That name definitely originates in the Star Wars novelization which was written by a ghostwriter (Alan Dean Foster) under close direction by George Lucas. He was simply called Senator Palpatine, even then. By the way, that short introduction (written by Princess Leia) is a great, but basic outline of Palpatine's rise to power.

Here's the entire Prologue from the novelization of Star Wars for anyone who's interested:

    Prologue

    Another Galaxy, another time.
The Old Republic was the Republic of legend, greater than distance or time. No need to note where it was or whence it came, only to know that...it was the Republic.
Once, under the wise rule of the Senate and the protection of the Jedi Knights, the Republic throve and grew. But as often happens when wealth and power pass beyond the admirable and attain the awesome, then appear those evil ones who have greed to match.
So it was with the Republic at its height. Like the greatest of trees, able to withstand any external attack, the Republic rotted from within though the danger was not visible from the outside.
Aided and abetted by restless, power-hungry individuals within the government, and the massive organs of commerce, the ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected President of the Republic. He promised to reunite the disaffected among people and to restore the remembered glory of the Republic.
Once secure in office he declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears.
Having exterminated through treachery and deception the Jedi Knights, guardians of justice in the galaxy, the Imperial governors and bureaucrats prepared to institute a reign of terror among the disheartened worlds of the galaxy. Many used the Imperial forces and the name of the increasingly isolated Emperor to further their own personal ambitions.
But a small number of systems rebelled at these new outrages. Declaring themselves opposed to the New Order they began the great battle to restore the Old Republic.
From the beginning they were vastly outnumbered by the systems held in thrall by the Emperor. In those first dark days it seemed certain the bright flame of resistance would be extinguished before it could cast the light of new truth across a galaxy of oppressed and beaten peoples...

    Kabalarian Philosophy:Baby names :D

And another interesting quote I found..."In one of his first rough draft incarnations, he was known as "Cos Da****." Obviously, Lucas named him this because he's the one who causes all the $#!+ for all the other characters in the saga." [face_laugh]

I keep hearing the name Frank. Frank Palpatine sounds like it would work well. Knowing Lucas, it would a name we've never heard of before if he decided to give him a first name.

Some years ago, I was browsing through a book store and I saw some Star Wars refence book. It might have been an encyclopedia or illustrated guide or something like that, it was too long ago to remember. Anywho, I opened it up just to flip through, and I saw an entry about Mara Jade. In the three or four seconds that i looked at it, I saw the name "Dantius Palpatine" come up. It didn't hit me until later that Dantius must have been the first name for Palpy.

When I first posted here and said "Dantius Palpatine", I was instantly rebuked from at least half a dozen people claiming that I had made the name up or had been "duped by a a fan-fiction"

Seeing Dantius used by someone other than me has now put that name at the top of my list of Palpy's first names.

Oh, and if Cos has some meaning to it implying the word Emperor, then I doubt that that would be Palpy's given name, and more likely a title which someone bestowed upon him (seriously, how many parents from a peasant family on a backwater world would name their son "Emperor Palpatine?")

'Dantius' was made up. It's on SuperShadow's site, which is all the proof you need that it's fake.

I'm not sure he has got a first name. He's too evil for that ;)

Gilrod: Which edition of the ANH novel do you own? I have the Special Edition, which features the prologue that you posted. I think GL has changed it a bit since the original release and I suspect that the name Palpatine is one of the changes/additions made, to make it tie in better with the PT films.

Lars_Muul: I have a 1976 hard cover edition. It is definitely from the late 1970s. It has a series of production photos from the movie and is fully titled: Star Wars From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker. It is a Del Rey Book. The edition I have was part of a book club edition. I'll try to find a picture of it.

Then it´s official: Palpatine was his name from start!

It´s too bad that Dantius is not his first name, because it sounds really good IMO.
Dantius Palpatine.... there´s an evil ring to it, don´t you think? [face_devil]

The source of "Ethril" is deleted information from the Episode I visual dictionary, which was cut out before publication. It was seen by some editors before hand though. Why it was cut, along with the real name for Darth Maul, I do not know.
