Victory-class star destroyers are cool, as are some of the early sketches for speeder bikes that look sort of like jetskis.

That gorax painting is actually from The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, one of my favorite books. Mostly it's filled with used and unused McQuarrie (and others) artwork, but a few images were painted specifically for the book - and I think that's one of them. However, the subject of it appears in one of the ewok movies.

Likewise, I think maybe that Coruscant scene was specifically done for the book (though there are some images that originated as Had Abaddon designs for RotJ).

Well it was designed for that movie... The McQuarrie piece appears to be just a way to have a more finished looking image and bring it into the look of everything else in the book.

By the way, the film was Caravan of Courage.

ugh, I was going to say ''Which'' instead of ''Why'' however you already answeared my question so I guess that it is alright. I have seen pics of the Gorax from said films how ever they are not nearly as terrifying as the one in the pic. Kinda ironic how the scariest concept art is not for an actual star wars film but a straight to vhs spin of.

Ah, I recognize that. Beautiful artwork by Ralph McQuarrie. A magnificently talented man and a class act.

This is amazing, but I'm not sure where is this spider from. Dagobah or Jabba's Palace, and is that Luke?

Lava in a spaceship? Uh, makes sense.

the planet was dagobah i believe and the lava throne room was not on a ship obviously it was on a planet. Had Abbadon - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki

Had Abbadon was actually a proposed name for the Imperial capital—later identified as Coruscant—which appeared in early drafts of Return of the Jedi. It was meant to be a city-planet orbited by two Death Stars under construction, and the Green Moon, later renamed Jus-Endor (which would later becomeEndor). Its lowest levels were meant to be home to Emperor Palpatine's throne room, surrounded by a lake of lava, around which Luke Skywalker would duelDarth Vader. These concepts were ultimately separated into the Emperor's throne room aboard Death Star II and Mustafar.
Abbadon is similar to the Hebrew word abaddon, meaning "destruction."

Anyone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think this concept was made back when the Emperor confrontation was supposed to take place at (the than) Imperial Capital of Abaddon.

    thejeditraitor beat me to it!

Ralph McQuarrie made the Look of Star Wars, for sure.

But you gotta like a bit of Ron Cobb too.
He had a larger influence on Alien (apart from nightmarish Gieger stuff), but he put his 2 cents into Star Wars.

    This is a tusken, right?
If so, I much prefer this lizard than that furry animal we got.

Perhaps, but maybe just general Desert Life.
I expect the big lizard got knocked back as just not being practical to put on film.

Aren't those in an episode of "ewoks" and featured in the star wars wild life book? (The one with the textured green scales.)
