There was the episode were they all took a bus trip to NYC and Homer said he had to go through NYC to get to Reading, PA I believe.

I have tried to figure this very thing out for years and then they actually built the Simpson house in Las Vegas for the Simpsons Con a couple of years ago.

Actually, you can't pinpoint it. In the episode where the town gets 2 different area codes, the codes 636 and 939 would put one half of the city in Missouri and the other half in Puerto Rico. The creators intentionally made it so that you can't pick out the state.

Also, in another episode, the family shows a map of states where they're not welcome and it shows that they can only go to two states: Arizona and North Dakota. And they didn't live there. So go figure.

Matt Groening is from Oregon, and the Springfield in Oregon has a nuclear power plant nearby, is driving distance from the ocean, and is near a river.

Clearly the Springfield in the Simpsons is based on Springfield, Oregon.

No one knows what state they live in. not even the directors, they never gave them a state. They just drop random useless hints every now and then.

Pope is correct. Springfield is set in Oregon...thus the tall mountains...the winters, the powerplant for sure, and that Groening was born there.

Plus, he did say always that he modeled the simpsons after his childhood.

someone said Scorpio was based on Bill Gates, and that's probably right......but another thing......"Bill Gates" himself actually was "on" the show when Homer had his internet business. Gates' goons basically robbed Homer of his net businss, whatever it was. :p

Well, I would think Iowa, because Iowa has always been taking some heat over certain animal rights laws. When you look at the many animals employed by Springfield Nucleur Power Plant, you would imagine the animal rights activists would be all over SpringField Nucleur.

I went to a seminar with Mike Reiss, who is one of the main producers/righters for the Simpsons. During a Q&A session, this qeuestion arose. Everyone was dying to hear the answer once and for all.

His answer was simple. We aren't supposed to know. The point of using the name "Springfield" is because that city exists in many states. He even made fun of the people who analyze each episode and try to pinpoint which state they really live in.

As for the point about the "Beyond the Laughter" episode, during the first few airings they said the family was from a certain state (though the name escapes me now), but in later airings they changed it to Kentucky. He didn't really explain why they did this.

I think Springfield is a county by itself, not belonging to a state. At least I say that so I don't hurt my brain.

Someone wrote a book about Star Trek's screwed up physics, and I was hoping he'd do one on Springfield's Geography.

Lawrence M. Krauss is a physicist not a geographer.
