12 oz. Mouse: Invictus- Recorded this the other month when it aired on Adult Swim but had been saving it for the right time to watch it. Loved the original show- but it’s such a specific, acquired, taste that I could never really recommend it to others. It’s just kinda one of those “if you like this show you’ve probably already watched it” type shows (because how else does one experience snail-paced surrealistic stoner psychological thrillers about a mouse doing jobs to buy beer amongst a conspiracy?). But, still, I was thrilled to hear it was getting a special episode after all these years (12 years!). Probably a little disappointed in the special itself- it has a long side tangent before the finale that makes it feel like only half of itself- but that was probably the point of the story, so it’s also hard to complain about that (afterall, it is a show that, if anything, is about super bizarre and random side tangents). I was also waiting for the original title theme to kick in at some point and was left disappointed... ...until the new theme played over the end credits: That is so freaking epic and simultaneously not the feel or spirit of the show and yet perfectly matched for what the show is and is not. And they’ve apparently ordered a new third season of 10 episodes to air in 2020 so I’ll no doubt get to hear it again. Reminds me that I need to track down the DVD version of the show that combines the entire series into an uninterrupted movie. Need to refresh myself on the plot because some of those details in the special were lost on me due to how long it’s been. Shatner was also doing Rescue 911 in that era. He had a lot going on that decade. Funny coincidence but I hadn’t seen an episode of TJ Hooker for decades yet while working a night shift whatever channel they had on in the break room ran reruns during my break period and the first one I saw was an episode with Nimoy in it.
"Lords of the Deep", the third episode of the new MST3K season. It's a cheap 1989 "Abyss" rip-off from Roger Corman. Not as stupid as the previous movies this season, but low grade. Stars Bradford Dillman, who's positively Shatnerian, at times.
I watched The Little Drummer Girl. That's some good John Le Carre. Inject that **** directly into my veins!
Good call. Forgot about that one. It's actually one of the stronger episodes, w/Nimoy giving a good performance as a grieving Father who wants revenge for his daughter's rape. And it's fun to see Shatner and Nimoy together as characters other than Kirk/Spock. T.J. Hooker is uniquely 80s in that the main plot is approached w/reasonable seriousness and is occasionally dark (see above), but there's always a running gag woven in and they never miss an opportunity to have Shatner tumbling over, or hanging off of, a moving car.

Shatner did a good spoof of that on SNL (can't find a video of it though that's not region restricted).
Finally finished S2 of The X-Files "Soft Light" features Tony Shaloub who has an unusual power. Good acting, the episode was ok. Episode 24 of S2 is a Monster Of The Week episode called "Our Town." It's not based on the Thornton Wilder play. This involves a sinister group of cultists who work in a chicken processing plant who also engage in murder and cannibalism on the side. It's a creepy episode, but it feels like a retread story wise; haven't Mulder and Scully already investigated mysterious cults on previous episodes? Still, I feel nervous whenever Dana is in danger and she faces a terrible threat in this adequate episode. S2 finale is called "Anasazi, " David Duchovny recieves a writing credit in this high quality episode that returns to the mythology aspect of the X-Files series. I won't spoil it, but Skinner is here, Mulder makes some bold actions with repercussions, there are Navajo Indians, the Smoking Man, and importantly, Mulder's father, Bill. Krycek is here too, unfortunately. Scully finds information about her and Duane Barry in an encrypted file that Mulder acquired. "Anasazi" is a great episode and an intense cliffhanger for S3...

I did the free signup thing for YouTube Premium and binged Origin. Origin is pretty much The Thing meets Lost. A bunch of would-be interplanetary colonists in Earth's near future wake up to find that disaster has befallen their spacecraft and that one or more of the survivors may have an extra-terrestrial lifeform in the driving seat. The show uses the format Lost so successfully pioneered, with characters individual back-stories being filled-in by flashbacks interwoven with the present-day struggle of the group to stay alive. All the colonists have been promised a clean start on the colony, which is the excuse used to explain why all these guys are a bunch of screw-ups and criminals with tons of emotional baggage which will cause them to make very stupid decisions. I found it stupid but watchable. Partly because the season only stretches to ten episodes, partly because the characters are actually quite fun. The cast are largely fresh faces, with the best known being Tom "Draco Malfoy" Felton, but the two stand-outs for me are two actors whom I've never heard of: Sen Mitsuji, who's IMDb page is blank save for Origin, but who exudes an edgy cool as former yakuza thug "Shun"; and Siobhan Cullen, who's very good looking and has a hypnotic Irish accent. They're not necessarily the best actors, but I thought they had the greatest amount of star quality. Anyway, it is a story about crazy stupid people and an alien/s trapped on a spaceship. You don't have to go for the free sign-up to watch the first two episodes as they're not behind any pay-wall, so trying it will only cost you time... however, if your time is precious and you've got something actually good to watch, I wouldn't give this priority.

Rome S1, Ep.1 "The Stolen Eagle" (2005) - Plot; Onetime allies Pompey and Caesar find themselves on opposite sides for control of the Roman Republic. There's about 10lbs. of story stuffed into this 52 minute 5lb. bag of ancient Roman goodness, but I was more than happy to indulge. The production values are so exquisite that you almost forget that it's essentially just a soap opera w/togas. Almost. - 8/10

Tony Shalhoub is so good, he makes me wish the episode wasn't so awful. Plus, as a bonus, it's got X at his most merciless and badass. That final shot . . . wow. That's truly chilling. But the script is awful.
