OK, I just saw Sith for the 2nd time. One thing I'm a little confused with is why Palpatines voice keeps going from normal, to creepy, to EXTRA creepy, and then back to normal.

Like when he says "I am the Senate", he's not fried yet, so why does he use the creepy "Sith" voice?

Its almost kind of hokey the way he goes back and forth between the voice changes. I was wondering if there was any rhyme or reason to it, or if it was just some arbitrary crap that Ian threw in for the role.

    Any thoughts???

I am not sure. The unpredictability of it and him in general made it freaky though. And the part where he says "Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood. The Force is stroooooooong in you" really made me giggle.

I was a bit confused just after he killed Mace. In talking to Anakin his voice tone changed about 4 times, and he has an almost lizard like hiss about him.

He is beyond the "voice" of the Emperor at this moment.

    This is obviously intentionally done.

I love how his voice changes!!!

When he is naming Vader, it's as if the darkside was speaking through him while he was talking.

You ever notice how vampires sound human until there fangs show? Or Bruce Wayne sounds like a punk until he's in the suit and Batman's sounds like a bad ass?

It was the darkside SWELLING within him. The deepnest and the gravelling(?) in his voice is like something in his throat. The power, the evil - it's speaking through him like the devil.

    Actually he IS the devil.

I wondered that too. I also wondered why Anakin's eyes kept going from Sith to normal. Once you're a Sith, isn't it more or less permanent?

That was the Dark Side talking, dude. The way I see it, he's so far gone that he has become the Dark Side incarnate. He IS the Dark Side.

What's the significance of Palpatine's Voice Change

Simple. Anakin has committed himself to the Sith and is now under the full manipulation of the dark side. He is now not only seduced by it, but also hypnotised by it.

This is why the Emperor said to Luke in RotJ "strike him(Vader) down and take your father's place at my side ". Would Luke have CONSCIOUSLY chose to be Sidious's apprentice even AFTER he killed Vader? NO WAY!! Luke would not have consciously joined Palpatine but Palpatine knew that there was a line and once it was crossed, Luke, just like Anakin, would be enslaved, hypnotized and powerless to fight the control of the dark side. This is why Anakin goes from saying "Just tell me how to save Padme" to "*monotone* Yes, master, the Jedi are all traitors and we must kill them all."

The voice was a way of saying that once Anakin had pledged himself to Sidous, he was under the control of Sidious. ie. "I MUST obey my master". Even if he doesn't agree with something (crying after the Seperatists slaughter), he is "useless to resist". Once I realized WHY the voice is strangely pitch shifted and echoed, I LOVED it.

To me it seemed as though he had 3 voices, one for Senator Palpatine, one for Darth Sidious, and one for the Emperor. But then in ROTS after the death of Mace, he has a weird weird weird voice that is disturbing, seems to be an amalgam of the last two voices.

After Anakin "pledges himself," he starts using the Sidious voice until he puts on the hood, and then he starts talkin like the Emperor.

Confusing, I know. But this is what I have gathered after several viewings.

I laughed when Sidous was being electrcuted by his own lightning and says Anakin im weak help me. And after Mace takes the short way down to the ground instad of using the elevater. Sidous jumps right up and starts talking.

It was the lightning or the Darkside coming out.

The first time I saw it I wasn't sure about it, but now after three viewings I think it's great.

He is totally empowered by the Force so his voice keeps changing. Kinda like when sucking on a helium ballon...it only lasts for a little bit but it makes a big change.

That's good question. The changes are extreme and almost diffrent everyone he speaks at the end of his duel with Mace. I took it to mean that he was stretched and was losing control of his being focusing on the dark side for guideance. I guess we need to know for sure that he faked his defeat which frankly I don't buy. I think his voice changes were evidence that he was losing control and didn't get any back until Mace told him he had lost. When Mace confined truth to one side (his) Palpatine again gained power from the force.

Edit: The Force does this in an attempt to create balance at the moment. The Force sees no good/evil, right/wrong.

When he first stands up after blasting Mace he says 'You are fulfilling your destiny' in the Emperor voice, but then after Anakin pledges himself to Sidious he says 'gooooooood' and 'the Force is strong with you' in a weird voice that has effects added to it that we've never heard before and we never hear again after he raises his hood. At first I just thought it was a little ridiculous and unneeded, but if you think of it as the Dark Side overwhelming him at that point because Anakin is becoming his apprentice then it kinda makes sense.

I love Ian's delivery in the proper Emperor voice, especially the 'do what must be done' part and his dialogue with Yoda.

I think basically he was on a high from the Darkside because his eyes had an extra glow to them as well so he got jacked up by killing Mace and turning Anakin to the Darkside.

It's suppose to signify how evil Sidious is. The deeper the voice, the more evil he is. I like all of the voices he had and his real voice is menacing. But it was stupid that it would change randomly after awhile. But I would imagine it's because its the effect from the Force Lighting. Still I think he did a great job in the movie and I hope we see him more in the TV series.
