In TPM he was Bail Antilles and not played by Jimmy Smits. Now they bring in Jimmy and make him Bail Organa. What's the deal?

well, they arent the same person, bail antilles was senator from alderaan during TPM, and turned over authority to viceroy bail organa before aotc, so theyre not the same, however i did get confused like you are now, when i was reading the book cloak of deception, which is awesome!

i think bail antilles and bail organa are two different ppl, maybe "bail" is a type of title, such as "prince" or "king", plus, i think i read somewhere that bail antilles is the man on the tantive iv in anh("...our last master was cpt. antilles...")

Bail Antilles and Bail Organa are definitely two different people, the starwars.com database confirms that indisputably.

Antilles was the guy who lost the election as Supreme Chancellor in TPM, I am assuming he was a little dissapointed about that thus Organa taking his place.

Well for one Antilles and Organa are two different people. And Bail Antilles never appeared on screen anyway.

We didn't need to see Bail Antilles, but the name of the planet he represented. Alderaan you could say is a planet that had their senator a chance of being Chancellor. But instead of a good guy (atleast I look at it that way) taking over the Senate you have a scheming senator to eventually gets his way.

With Bail Organa showing up in AOTC, we finally see a likely "thorn" on Palpatine's side who we know in the future, gets his "daughter" to be part of the Rebellion while acting as member of the so called Imperial Senate.

I don't think Palpatine knew during the TPM era, that an Alderaan connection, finally would bring him down. Touche.

Q: Are Bail Antilles and Bail Organa supposed to be the same character?

A: With the recent announcement that Jimmy Smits will play Bail Organa in Episode II, this previously unseen character is getting a lot of attention. Bail Organa is Princess Leia's adoptive father, and a representative from Alderaan. He perishes when the Death Star destroys that peaceful world in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

Bail Antilles is also an Alderaanian politician. When Chancellor Valorum was ousted from office by a vote of no confidence, three nominees lined up to take his place: Ainlee Teem from Malastare, Palpatine from Naboo, and Bail Antilles from Alderaan. Although the scene was ultimately left out of the finished film, the script to Episode I shows that these two men were conceived of as separate characters. Both are mentioned. Bail Organa seconds the vote of no confidence; Bail Antilles is nominated to succeed Valorum.

Two Bails, two different characters. It should be noted that "Antilles" is sort of the Star Wars equivalent of "Jones," and "Smith." There have been numerous characters throughout the films, books, and expanded universe material named Antilles, but almost none of them are directly related. For instance, Corellian hotshot starfighter pilot Wedge Antilles is not related to Bail Antilles. Nor is he related to C-3PO and R2-D2's former master, Captain Antilles, the Rebel officer whom Vader chokes to death in the opening moments of A New Hope.

It can be confusing to the average person but the first reply to this question was the correct answer.
