I'm the sort of bloke who appreciates a good knob twisting.

If I have to close a door quietly then I turn the knob. Otherwise give me the kerthunk.

I try to avoid a kerthunk when closing a door, otherwise my cat will become aware that there might be food for her and then run around the house meowing sweetly for roughly 20 minutes

I do this often when exiting a car when using Uber/Lyft, because I’m paranoid in slamming and/or closing the door too firmly.

I'm old enough that I don't have to try to sneak quietly through doors after curfew. But I have enough mechanic and handyman experience that I want to be gentle with the equipment and make it last longer. OTOH, sometimes I want to announce my entrance without actually announcing my entrance.

I don't know, just latch it casual.

-When I lived in WI I don't think I cared how I closed the door, but I lived alone. In fact, it takes a good kerthunk to know the door closed properly behind you.

Since moving in with the daughter and SIL I'm more aware. I've become downright sneaky with feeding Missy (the cat that sleeps with them) her 6am breakfast. I stealthily open the door, cross the room, put her dish down, pet her, then retrieve her dinner dish and leave without walking them.

We have door handles. I've only seen a door knob once, when I was in spain some time in the late 90s.

I want to hear the latch.

Also a big fan of pneumatic door closers. Why should I have to turn around and close it behind me?

If it is fast enough, I will hear the latch before I am out of earshot. Reassurance achieved.

    ---------------------

Honestly, when I was a kid...I figured all doors would be automatic (like Star Trek) by now.

I mean, they had them at the grocery store already...I just figured the tech would be simplified/mass produced/made cheaply, and everyone would have them.

    Oh well.

My brother is two years younger than me. When I was about seven-years-old I went to open the back door and instead of a KERLICK there was just searing pain. Baby bro had affixed a razor blade to the door handle. If you’re wondering, yes it cut through to the bone. Fortunately it was the late Seventies. He got his five-year-old arse kicked.

Not only do my kids apparently not understand the concept of being quiet by preventing the door kerthunk, they also don’t understand gently closing bathroom drawers or kitchen cabinet doors.
