I just watched an episode of Family Matters on Nick at Nite. During this episode Steve Urkel constructed a robotic duplicate of himself that displayed signs of very advanced artificial intelligence. In the end of the episode he also unveiled a robotic copy of Laura Winslow, which for some reason neither she nor her parents were creeped out by. This is not the issue at hand though.

Steve Urkel is a high school student living in a middle class suburb of Chicago. These robots would require a great deal of research and development before construction could even begin. There is also the cost of supplies that have to be considered. Remember also that this is in the early 1990's, and that artificial intelligence was still in very primitive stages of development. Indeed, the robots featured in this episode would be advanced even by today's standards.

Where does Steve get the money to pull something like this off? Let's not forget some other inventions that Steve creates during the run of the series. Off the top of my brain, I can remember at least the following: a teleportation device, a time machine, a mechanism that duplicates objects, and a machine that creates instantaneous clones of people, but which generates an alternate personality within that clone.

The leading scientists of the world with unlimited government funding have been unable to duplicate these results. The inventions of Steve Urkel would have changed the entire world in unimaginable ways. However, we can make a reasonable estimate that the costs for these inventions much have cost Steve, at least, several billion dollars. Where did he get the funds?

I am disappointed the writers of Family Matters didn't explore the obvious storyline here. The set up was perfect. Steve Urkel is getting billions of dollars from a mysterious source. His next door neighbor, his friend, father of the woman he loves, is a police officer. The perfect story arc for the final season or two could have been Carl Winslow investigating the sinister methods in which Steve acquired his funding and deciding whether or not to have him criminally prosecuted.

Discuss your theories and opinions here and possible alternate conclusions to the Family Matters saga.

Yep. Steve Urkel got his funding by doing a few things in West Hollywood he wasn't exactly proud of.

See, I heard he was tight with the Chicago Outfit. The recent investigation into their activities by the Feds was even called "Operation Family Secrets;" clearly a reference to the show.

Clearly, you did not consider that there were other advanced robots running around at the time. [image=http://www.aptirrelevance.com/images/stuff/t2swear.jpg]

Are you saying that a genius like Steve Urkel was incapable of thinking up ways to fund his projects? I mean, seriously, if my IQ was 200 I could probably think up ways to fund cancer research or put an end to poverty. Or, you know, create crazy machines to annoy the hell out of my girlfriend's father.

This is obviously why the show was canceled. I mean, nothing could compete with NYPD Blue back in the day. ;)

Andalite Bandit, you are confused! The show Family Matters is actually not a documentary but a fictional show! Steve Urkel did not exist and the robot was not really artificially intelligent! It was just a fake robot, or as the professionals call it "fauxbot."

Having grown up in a middle class suburb of Chicago, I can assure you, people throw out advanced electronics all the time. Why, I used to walk along the road on garbage day and scavenge all sorts of things, its where I got the parts for my first Sonic Extrapolator.

How It's Made narrator Brooks Moore (canadian) pronounced it like that. I think that's why they sacked him and gave us the terrible new narrator.

urkel constructed a time machine and traveled back to 1872 and invested in several soon-to-be major companies. when he got back to the 90's he had millions of dollars just waiting for him. duh.

A-B, Stefan was not a clone. It just created an alternate personality, not "clones with alternate personality."

Also, which "true story" did you think American Gangster was based on, huh?

You are a speaker of falsehood and a Neo-Pilgrim. I distinctly recall several storylines centered around Stefan and Steve existing at the same time. Initially, I believe you are correct. However in the later seasons, Stefan is his own character.

From his character page on Wiki: At the end of the seventh season[1], Steve creates a cloning machine, which he uses on himself, briefly duplicating himself. It is suggested by Laura that the clone be permanently transformed into Stefan, allowing him to become a real person separate from Steve. Throughout the rest of the series, Stefan became Laura's boyfriend.

In one episode, the Winslows go to Paris. Stefan decides to stay there to work as a fashion model, and the two begin a strained long distance relationship. A few episodes after, Stefan couldn't resist the fact of leaving Laura, and decides to move back to Chicago, where he sees her from the stage at a New Edition concert. The two are together again until one of Laura's former boyfriends, Curtis, returns to the show. Eddie tells Curtis that Laura still loves him as a prank to get back at Laura. Curtis tries to get her to come back to him, but when he realizes Stefan is her boyfriend, he gives him a warning that if he ever breaks Laura's heart, he'll get what he deserves. Stefan, unfortunately, believes that will never happen. Near the series finale, Stefan proposes to Laura, but at the same time, so does Steve. In the end, Laura chooses Steve over Stefan, finally ending their long-distance relationship (that went on until Stefan was finally a real person). To that, Stefan leaves, and the rest of the series goes on without him.

Behold, JC. Not only do the neo-pilgrims seek to distort the truth on politics, society, religion, and mothman, but also on the plotlines of Family Matters, the smash hit ABC family sitcom that aired weekly on TGIF.

Well, first Stephan Urkelle was just an alternate personality of Steve, but then he did the cloning machine thing, which IIRC first Carl used to duplicate money. Then he put himself in it, put his clone in the... [crap? what was the name of the personality changing machine with the little lever on the side?] and then there were two.

Secondly, why does that guy always play a cop?

    Thirdly, Family Matters is racist.

Fourth, did anyone else see the two time travel episodes, the Bruce Lee one, and the one where they shrink themselves and sleep on a sandwich?

EDIT: Also, the last season where they switched networks and got a fake Harriet (who btw, was actually the one character that made F.M. officially a spin-off from Perfect Strangers) was a complete and total abomination and disaster. Between the fake Harriet, Steve in space, and worst of all, Laura falling in love with Steve  I refuse to even acknowledge the existence of the last season.

All of these things can be accomplished with a smiple cardboard box. Obviously Urkel just dressed up the box so you couldn't tell.

    Several sources:

    1. If you've read "Fight Club" or seen the movie, then you'll know that Stefan is Tyler Durden to Steve's Jack and he sells soap using stolen fat from liposuction clinics in the Chicago area.

    2. You don't think he uses all of that lab and chemistry equipment for experiments, do you? I'm sure the Winslows noticed that nasty smell coming from the Urkel's basement, they just chose to ignore the fact that Steve was making crack and meth. Why else would Waldo just "hang out" at the Winslow's home all the time? He was too dumb for Eddie, he was really over there so he could get a fix from the latest batch of narcotics that Steve had cooked up. This also offered Steve plenty of plausible deniability, whenever Waldo was wanting to get high, he'd do it in the Urkel's basement and Steve would be at the Winslow's home and this would be his alibi while the police would be none the wiser.

    3. He sold black market stem cells, usually taken from fetal tissue or umbilical cords - why do you think he was so hung up on hooking up with Laura?

    4. He dabbled in some black projects for the US Gov't. Who in their right mind would believe that a suburban teenage nerd was working on secret projects for the feds? It was the perfect cover story and there was probably an episode in the works where Agents Mulder and Scully came knocking on his door wanting to know about some project or alien coverup.

    5. He returned pop bottles and cans for the refund money.
