I wonder if Grievous would have been depicted differently on film if Oldman had portrayed him. Not that he necessarily would have been a cold killing machine, but hopefully would have been more Zorg/Norman Stansfield/the guy from True Romance than just Snidely Whiplash in Space.

Random thought: Would we all remember the Samurai Jack Clone Wars so fondly if the 3D The Clone Wars didn't exist to make it look so good in comparison? I seem to remember everyone at The Official Site Forums hating the former back in 2005 because it was the mainstream thing and it contradicted Labyrinth of Evil.

To be fair, its kind of hard for live-action to match the whirling buzzsaw of death from the Clone Wars miniseries. Short of going the Matrix route, and that's not really the Star Wars movie style.

The old EU kept Grievous kind of consistent as a very dangerous threat, a match for multiple regular Jedi and a regular Jedi Master as well, requiring a Jedi Council member to really take him on (Windu, Kenobi, Yoda probably would have dismantled him). If I remember right, the last cartoon "season" came out just days before RotS, which is why I don't blame it and Labyrinth of Evil having contradicting details. TCW just meandered here and there with whatever struck their fancy (between Filoni and Lucas, they had some strange ideas like Banking Clan and Trade Federation "neutrality").

Although I've always loved the Samurai Jack combat style, and loved it when it was adapted to Star Wars (jousting clones and droids!), all set to awesome music. Off-topic- and they finally finished Samurai Jack with season five after so many years! Also there was this other cancelled series, Sym-bionic Titan that had kind of had that same kind of animation in one episode (warships conquering a world, desperate hero fighting for time), which I really loved too.

Remember how many major Separatists they captured over the years? I think there was speculation for an eventual big jailbreak, but the series didn't last that long.

Actually, what annoyed me more was Yoda's arc in "season six", that it basically concluded with his realization that the Jedi had probably already the Clone Wars, but still had a chance to win the war against the dark side? It went something like that? Which I just found really stupid, since otherwise you'd think he would have been better prepared for the end rather than being shocked by how quickly things deteriorated.

The final season of Samurai Jack this year was not only really, really good on its own merits, but compared to the original run, I think you can see some clear influences from the Clone Wars cartoon. The opening scene of the final Samurai Jack season was pretty clearly influenced by the Obi-Wan vs. Durge lancer duel.

Tartakovsky also wrote and illustrated a Luke Cage comic for Marvel last year... really made me wish they had gone to him for the current Mace Windu comic.

Me too! What a mistake that was. If he'd lost we would've seen way more of him, like, defending the chancellor.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, democracy simply doesn't work.

The first clone wars project had higher highs, like Quinlan's arc and Gendy's animated stuff, but also lower lows like Anakin confessing his Tusken massacre and the reaction of a Jedi being, "well, dude, you should really take care of that".

The second clone wars series was more consistent, and ultimately I cared about the new cast of Ashoka and Rex more than Alpha or Ventress' stalker crush on Kenobi.

Second clone wars also took a great deal more time to focus on the comradery between Anakin and Obi Wan instead of more whining nonsense like there was in AotC.

I remember seeing that toy campaign waaaay back in the day with Atha Prime, it was one of the first Star Wars magazines I ever owned. And being totally blown away by the "CLONE WARS".

I love the first as a piece of actual art.

I love the second as a piece of Star Wars.

The first is more striking, the second is more consistent with the universe.

Good joke. I laughed. Got me.
In all seriousness what? The first one I can only remember like 1 contradiction. The second one is ridiculous. It threw the EU in a blender and somehow messed up the films at the same time. Anakin is a different character in TCW. And let's not pretend Ahsoka makes the act fit better. CW actually tried to complement the films and flesh out the events. What did TCW do? It glossed over so much.

Think of it like this: Picture me in 2005. I see ROTS. What do I wonder? Maybe how Palpatine was captured? Maybe how Anakin became a Knight? Maybe how he got his scars? NAH. I probably wonder what the MANDALORIANS were doing! THAT'S IMPORTANT. I probably wonder IF ANAKIN HAD A PADAWAN AT SOME POINT. VERY LIKELY. What does TCW do for the universe? How is it more consistent? Having less interesting duels?

How is Anakin a different character? I keep seeing this a lot without regard to the fact that the movies covered literally the worst days of his life in comparison to TCW which covered his "average" day.

This would be like saying raving-lunatic Picard in Star Trek First Contact is a completely different character from TNG Picard ignoring the fact that First Contact Picard was facing one of his biggest fears in the Borg (and in AOTC and ROTS, Anakin was facing those biggest fears in the loss of Padme and Shmi). Or that Ian Holm's Bilbo is completely different from Martin Freeman's, ignoring the effect the Ring has on him.

Grievous's character was still being developed for Episode III and the EU writers just went off his appearance mostly. They wanted Grievous to be a slick badass, while George in the end envisioned Grievous as more of a mustache-twirling villain. I mean this definitely isn't the first time George had creative differences with his cohorts (see also: the OT).

The microseries fits with Labyrinth of Evil although it's messy. Nelvaan takes place before Tythe, and the cruiser scene with Anakin and Obi-Wan takes place after Tythe (we don't necessarily see Anakin make a new arm; he's just making tweaks for all we know). The Coruscant battle is explained as a different/looser account of the events where surface details are similar (the Talz and Ithorian Jedi, Shaak Ti leading the Chancellor's protection, Palpatine being in his apartment instead of his office, etc.) but finer ones are different.

I would've really liked to see the Mace and Kit vs. Grievous train battle done in Genndy's animation style though; not adapting it was a missed opportunity.

I'm apprehensive to see it. Many of the reviews and fan reactions I've read say the first three episodes of season 5 were legendary, but after that it got sloppy.

I think it was just a matter of Lucas changing his mind - he originally did envision Grievous as a Jedi killer. Don't quote me on this, because I can't remember the source, but I think Genndy originally planned to bring back Durge for the 20th episode of the Microseries. But Lucasfilm told them to introduce Grievous instead, to promote the upcoming film. They told Genndy's team that Grievous was this terrifying cyborg killer and so they went with it, followed by the rest of the EU. Then Lucas changed his mind, as it usually happened, and rewrote Grievous as a cackling, cowardly villain.

Grievous totally makes sense to be the way he is in ROTS thanks to the microseries. Because of the microseries we know why he has such a reputation (you don't become a general of the second largest army in the freakin' galaxy if you're an incompetent coward) and why he coughs and acts cowardly in ROTS (because he got his lungs and chest apparatus crushed several hours before we first see him in the movie). Without the microseries his character falls apart. Why does he have the reputation he has? How is he a general of anything? He's done little to nothing to prove his worth (and no, the handful of victories he had like the one over the Nightsisters isn't enough). Also, he's been witnessed to be an incompetent coward multiple times by multiple Jedi and clones, so there's no room left for rumours that he's such a big deal.

When we have only TCW, we are left with a lot of questions and no answers. Why is he a general? Where does he come from? Why is he a cyborg? Why does he cough? Why does anyone take him seriously when Obi-Wan has wiped the floor with him several times (also Ahsoka and a few younglings)?

Microseries Grievous is just sooo gooood! Hence the avatar. As much as I would of love to have seen the original idea of the Republic and Jedi fighting evil clones I do love and prefer the 2002-05 multimedia project to the one that came later. The CIS were actually a menace with strange terrifying commanders and droids in their legions instead of the bumbling fools that would come later, I could understand the Republic and Jedi wanting an army to combat these mechanically evil monstrosities. ROTS is actually my least favorite of the prequels because of the bumbling foolish droids...among other things.

I felt the original project fit with the fantasy aspect of Star Wars more so than the later project. At it's core Star Wars is a fantasy story over a science fiction one and I felt it working with how powerful the heroes and villains could be while tackling the real issues of war (yes, I thought the over-the-top Jedi fit with Star Wars). I do like Filoni's Clone Wars, definitely some great Star Wars moments at times but it will never surpass the original project.
