In I, Jedi doesn't Corran say that he considers Tycho a cut above him? I don't remember for sure; I do think it was while he was reflecting on the natural gifts of pilots like Wedge and Tycho, that place them so close to folks like Luke even without having the Force at their command.

a pilots ability differs a lot from the craft they fly. In real life the ability of a fighter pilot is measured in their ability to outwit opponents and defeat them. in commercial flights ability is measured by their ability to take off and land safely plot the quickest and safest courses and make intense mathmatical equations in the event of bad weather or malufunctions.

I would assume that star wars acts in a similar way, therefore:

    Best pilot of fighters:

    Anakin (skywalker)
    Luke
    Plo Koon
    Wedge
    Fel (tie with wedge)
    Jaina
    Anakin Solo
    Obi Wan
    Kyp
Han (Was a fair pilot for the empire but said fel was better pilot than him, at least in a fighter)

    Best "other" pilots:

    Han Solo
    Lando (taught by han)
    Chewwy
    Roa
    Mara

I'm sure ive missed loads out!

I think the best overall pilot, the one who would win most fights in any vessell would be Anakin Skywalker, but I think Han's wit would kepp him close.

I reckon Wedge and Fel are than Koon, and that should be Saesee Tiin anyway (who is widely regarded as the best Prequel Jedi pilot, with Anakin).

As good as Luke is, he never took down a squadron of enemy fighters and a space platform through not only tactical brillance, but manuvering as well. Aside from the Death Star run, we never really see Luke do piloting beyond traditional dogfighting and dune hopping. Anakin has more experience in adverse situations, and was the ONLY human ever to be able to podrace, so I'd give him the edge.

That's not even counting Vader... ;)

Obi Wan didn't call him the best for nothing.

    1. Darth Vader/ Anakin Skywalker
-They're the best pilot in the galaxy. Period.
    2. Luke Skywalker
-He doesn't have the hours of the other elites, but he still deserves this spot.
    3. Wedge Antilles
-He lead the elite Republic Squadron for years and years, longer than Fel lead the 181st and survived. He survived BOTH Death Stars. And to top that all off, as an old man he took out a squadron of skips in a droid-less fighter.
    4. Baron Fel
-No Shields, poor weapons, no problem. This man reeks talent.
    5. Tycho Celchu
-Insanely talented also. Wedge always comments on how his kills are so surgical- a single shot into the cockpit or whatever.
    6. Saesee Tiin
-His species are normally incredible pilots, and with his force sensitivity he kicks it to another level. He pulls some insane moves in the Clone Wars Cartoons
    7. Maarek Stele
-Though I hate video game characters, he's pretty good, and has ridiculous expierence to boot
    8. Han Solo
-He was better than Fel at academy. Now...not so much, be he is still one of the best pilots in the galaxy
    9. Gavin Darklighter
-One of four people to command Rogue Squadron, and he lead them through the brutal Vong war. Not a bad chap at all.
    10. Pash Cracken
-You don't get the moniker "invincible" for nothing.

Honourable mentions: Turr Phennir, Jaina Solo

Not in any particular order, just some thoughts:

Anakin Skywalker is on his own tier. He is, beyond doubt, the best star pilot in the galaxy. First we are told that, then we are shown that. It's impossible to say where his natural and Force abilities begin and end.

As big a fan of Rogue Squadron as I am, I have to say that all Jedi who flew in the Wars are better than any non-Jedi. They fly deathtraps into raging battles and usually come out alive, using the Force to its fullest extent. More to the point, even Obi-Wan, who hates flying, actually keeps up with Anakin even when he's going balls-out crazy in that fighter. While EU evidence may put Saesee Tiin and others above Obi-Wan, he's probably still the second-best pilot we see on screen at the time of Episode III.

Luke, of course, is the man. He survives an encounter with his father in a ship he's never flown before, and takes the impossible precision shot that blows the DS. I'd put him on about the level of Obi-Wan circa Episode II...terrific at evasion but possible to overwhelm. But this is with NO experience...like his father, he's got amazing natural skill and it's small wonder he's leading his own squadron a few years later. He doesn't have as much experience as most of these (choosing not to focus on his flying in later life) but as late as Spectre of the Past he's still incredibly scary in an X-Wing.

I'd also like to give a shout-out to the underappreciated team of Lando Calrissian and Nien Nunb. Think about it. Would YOU have liked to fly the Falcon through there?

Han Solo has pulled off similar feats in the novels, and with an even more strangely shaped ship Jango Fett pulled off some crazy stuff in the Geonosis asteroid field.

Tycho Celchu was shown to be utterly amazing in I, Jedi, and along with two other craft he pulled off a CRAZY turn in RotJ.

Wedge is also quite a good pilot of course, and there's a ton of evidence behind me for that. I think his leadership sklls are at least as important to his overall success though. Soontir Fel is probably a little better.

I also have to give special mention to the tri-fighters. Scary little bastards. One just about made Obi-Wan piss himself in the RotS novelization. Show me a tri-fighter that's survived a few battles and I'll show you a dangerous little force indeed.
