When Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Jar-Jar were in the sea vessel on their way through the core on Naboo, Jar-Jar started to freak out right after Obi-Wan got power back to the vessel. Qui-Gon put his hand on Jar-Jar's shoulder and used the force to subdue Jar-Jar. At the same time the vessel accelerates quite quickly out of the creatures reach and almost jumps as if Obi-Wan gave it too much power. Now Jar-Jar's reaction to Qui-Gon's subdueing seemed to almost make him go unconscious. Obi-Wan makes his comment at this time, and all of this happened kind of simultaniously.

Given all of this, I have a few questions:

    1. Did Obi-Wan say "I think I over-did it" or "I think you over-did it"?

    2. In light of question #1, was Obi-Wan referring to the fact that he over compensated for the speed required to get away from the creature, or was he referring to Qui-Gon sending Jar-Jar more power than he required for subdueing?

    Either way makes sence.

    Your thoughts?

I always thought he was referring to the fact that Qui- Gonn brought Jar Jar along at all. Sort of like when he says later the line about picking up another "pathetic life form>" But I've never been 100% sure. Your guesses are as good as mine.

I didn't notice that Qui-Gon subdued Jar-Jar for quite some time. I always thought that Obi-Wan said, "He overdid it", meaning that Jar-Jar freaked out and passed out.

it's "You overdid it" because QG zapped Jar Jar too much. You can see Jar Jar's tongue come out and his head goes limp.

From the Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace screenplay...

    -----------------------------------

    QUI-GON : Relax.

QUI-GON puts his hand on JAR JAR's shoulder. JAR JAR relaxes into a coma.

    OBI-WAN : You overdid it.

    Obi-Wan was talking to Qui-Gon.

The large COLO CLAW FISH is surprised and rears back. The sub turns around
    and speeds away.

JAR JAR : (cont'd) Wesa in trouble now??
    QUI-GON : Relax.

QUI-GON puts his hand on JAR JAR's shoulder. JAR JAR relaxes into a coma.

    OBI-WAN : You overdid it.

The COLO CLAW FISH leaps after the fleeing sub as it shoots out of the
tunnel and into the waiting jaws of the SANDO AQUA MONSTER.

Qui-Gon was trying to relax Jar Jar and overdid it, making Jar Jar fall into a coma.

This whole scene begs the question. Which Jedi visited the planet Vulcan?

    THAT'S INTERESTING

I'VE ALWAYS HAD A DIFFERENT TAKE ON THAT SCENE

I THOUGHT AFTER QUIGON SAYS "RELAX,"

OBIWAN SAYS, "HE NEVER DID IT," REFERRING TO THE FACT THAT JAR JAR IS AN ANXIOUS MESS

Hehe. Subconsciously, I always wondered this, but never pursued it. I guess people just automatically assume Jedi are capable of this. Also, a good portion of society has watched Spaceballs. Lone Star, the "Jedi" of the movie, learned this move from his victim. Perhaps we (again) subconsciously added that to the list of Jedi powers.

Spock: To assume a Jedi to be Vulcan is...illogical. :p
