There's also a character from Coruscant and the Core Worlds (I don't own the book, so I can't confirm what the exact wording or context is) named Signet Mezzileen who ruled over Coruscant for 70 years and served as Supreme Chancellor. I'm not sure if that "ruled for 70 years" refers to him being Chancellor, since I'm pretty sure Chancellors have limited terms (usually eight years a la U.S. Presidents) or if maybe he served as some sort of governor or mayor for Coruscant.

Term limitations are nice but how do they apply to aliens with longer lifespans? Blotus the Hutt reigned 275 years as Chancellor! And yes they called it "reigned" literally as referring to his Chancellorhood. So if Signet Mezzileen is an alien 70 years seems plausible.

Must have been a great Chancellor if people were able to tolerate him for that long. :p Then again, they were willing to give Palpatine emergency powers to extend his term so the people of the Republic might not be a great judge of character.

I don't think they had term limits during the Old Republic until 1,000 BBY. Perhaps Tarsus Valorum's reforms led to only keep two four-year terms.

Now I want shortlived species have terms of 2 days.. 3 weeks... etc. just so befitting their fast living quick dying species. Must be hell for galactic election organisation so soon after but hey... every species deserves to become chancellor if winning it.

Technically Palpatine's Empire was just an Empire in name only and still the victorious Republic after the Clone Wars, just without term limits as that is what went out of the window first for him. The Senate dissolution during ANH made it a shortlived true Empire only since then. Before that it was an ineffective tyrannical Democracy!

what does term limits have to do with how long a species lives? Just because you can live to be 900 doesn't mean the best thing for the galaxy is that you serve 9 times as long as a human can.

And, I suspect if a species only lives 3 weeks, you got better things to do with your life then serve in government. Not to mention, if you live 3 weeks, you probably aren't going to be educated enough to serve in such capacities.

Now granted, I suppose you could have a short lived, incredibly intelligent and fast learning species that doesn't need to spend long periods on culture, courtship, or family behaviors. They just want to be good Chancellors...okay. In that case, you elect them to office on a ticket, knowing full well the Vice-Chancellor will be ascending to the role and completing the term of office. No problemo.

Huh. It turns out the Wook language is almost directly from CatCW. Weird I never honed in on the 70 years before, it definitely didn’t stick in my memory.
