Discussion Who Should Direct the Next/Future Star Wars Film(s)?

Haha! Slo-mo stormtrooper closeup and 3PO’s exposition dump got me.

Though they forgot to put a ****** filter all over it. Not a Snyder film unless it looks like the film reel was either frozen in ice or fell into a manure pit.

 

Imagine a slasher film about a masked Sith Lord hunting down Jedi, directed by John Carpenter 40-45 years ago.
Is there a contemporary director who could pull off that vibe?

 

Carpenter in Big Trouble mode would suit Star Wars well. Zany freaky hokum with a light comedic touch. He could even do a synthy soundtrack.

Steven Soderbergh's published list for everything he watched and read in 2024 includes a lot of Star Wars, including the PT, OT, SOLO, ROGUE ONE and ANDOR.

I would watch the living hell out of a Soderbergh Gerrera joint.

What would be really cool is if Pernilla August directed a Star Wars story. I suspect she wouldn't be terribly interested - especially if we're talking feature film - but who knows?
One thing that might interest her is telling the story of Shmi Skywalker... but it might also feel awkward and completely wrong for an actor who's already played the character to direct a younger actor playing the same character.

 

I guess you are a fan because of Let the Right One In ( 2008)? His last film was a adaptation of the crime novel The Snowman ( Jo Nesbø) and it was a huge flop. He was supposed to make a big budget film version of childrens novel author Astrid Lindgrens The Brothers Lionheart. But it never happened and i think that project is now being done by a Danish director ( Thomas Vinterberg) instead.

@Jedi Master Frizzy I think the only realistic Norwegian choice who is working in Hollywood right now is Joachim Rønning. Who did the last Daisy Ridley film ( Young Woman and The Sea). He is already in the Disney studio system, but i do not see him doing a Star Wars film, and he is not really a director i fancy i have to say.

@Lulu Mars Pernillas daughter Alba August is a very talented actress. And singer actually. She could play Shmi Skywalkers long lost daughter…Anakins sister. Yeah….i know.

That was directed by Joachim Rønning. And his partner Espen Sandberg. So already made a big Disney film. I am not a fan of that film i have to say.

 

It was not the best but it had some good things. I think i would like a Star Wars made by him. Maybe we get full on norse mythology. Inspirasjon from Odin, Thor and Loki. Maybe he can direct another Daisy Ridley movie.

 

I have not seen Young Woman And The Sea yet, but it got good reviews. More norse mythology inspiration or viking / medieval period style action is what i do expect from the Dawn of the Jedi project.

 

Depends if James Mangold is a big norse Nordic fan of its history and Dawn of the Jedi feels more ancient Egypt or Aztec/ Babalons to me

 

Oh, for sure. I think i linked it with the Game of Thrones guys who was involved in it on the early stages. It feels like Mangold is doing his own thing. Inspiration could come from many «periods». The norse mythology angle has been used by Hollywood for everything from big animation films to Marvel, so i do not expect them to litterally draw from that source with Star Wars. Some inspiration though, yes
