For me I would say the original trilogy are all around the same quality and are very good.
From the prequels Revenge of the Sith is outstanding and I favour it over all three of the OT,however I find the first two films in the prequels to be weaker than the OT.

The Force Awakens is now my favourite film overall.

I've been meaning to add my 2 cents here for a long time and I will do that now.

I don't think either the PT or the OT are stronger than the other. For me they simply cannot be compared. Reasons:

    1. Star Wars was always about George pushing the envelope with special effects technology and he used whatever was the cutting edge of technology at the time to show the story, not which he WANTED but which he COULD. Therefore, the OT is great for it's own level of special effects, story, worlds and characters that we get to see. And so is the PT for it's own level of those same things.

PT could show us a lot more worlds and characters and expansive things since the technology allowed it. So neither is better, they are just the best for the respective time periods in which they were made.

    2. The story of the OT is starts from something that calls itself "A New Hope" which tells the story of a hero's rise and of him making a dark world better. The story of the PT starts off with "The Phantom Menace" and is about a hero making a bright world darker.

Therefore, I'd expect the OT to be fun and exciting while I'd expect the PT to be dark and epic. Which is what we got, so both are good in that department too.

    3. The characters are directly affected by the times in which they were written, back in the 70's and 80's the characters in a sci-fi fantasy movie had to be more exciting and fun and campy and out there, since they were based on the Flash Gordon archetypes. The characters in the PT were also a reflection of the times they were made in, the more modern times with less camp, they had to be more serious and cool and flashy.

    4. The story, characters and visual styles all match up to each other and line up with what was required at the times. There are dark times and fun times in both the trilogies, but there were more fun times in the OT and more dark times in the PT since as I said earlier, the OT was about the rise of a hero and the PT was about the fall of a hero.

Am I making sense here? Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling. To put it simply, each trilogy was the best of what it could be with regards to the technology and the story that was intended to be told by Lucas.

I love each movie for it's merits and demerits and view them all separately in their own contexts.

So, in the end I'd simply say......

I was gonna write a long, boring analysis of why I prefer one thing to another, but then I realized exactly how boring that would be, so I'm settling for this instead:

    Star Wars?
    I love Star Wars!

I love all 7 films but when it comes to rewatches I tend to watch the PT more often. A lot of that is nostalgia I grew up with the PT but also love the story of the PT best.

I grew up with the OT. It will always be better than the prequel trilogy in my eyes. I still enjoy the PT because it's Star Wars.
But no the OT surpasses it in nearly every way for me.

I've got more of a preference to the OT. Just think the story and characters are better. Now I do like the PT, especially for Lucas's imaginative world building and detailed directing. I've said this a lot lately but the PT has grown on me more then it used to.

Hi! Welcome to the Boards. I agree that the Prequels are better in pretty much every regard though I still hold the OT in high esteem.

I respect the OT but I was never a fan of the Empire Strikes back, to me the best Star Wars movie is Revenge Of The Sith. Not only was that the only Star Wars movies I seen in theaters, it alongside 1 and 2 presented tragedy some thing that was rare among mainstream movies.

I like all the Star Wars movies and I grew up on the OT but the PT got me interested in Star Wars all over again when it came out and I'm loved the PT more since then. It just expanded the Star Wars universe into so much more. Great characters, great worlds, I like that it went into the detail it did about the politics in the Republic.

The PT was certainly not a rehash or just fan services.

If I attempted to explain why I think the OT is all-around better but I personally prefer the PT, I would end up repeating the above arguments but probably far less clearly, so I shall just leave the above quote in its entirety. @};-

Same here. I love the OT because it stands alone well but also combines with the PT to create this grand saga, and comprises films of consistently good quality, but I love the PT for what it simply is.

I like the scenery and characters better. The PT feels like it is outer space the OT feels like planet earth. PT had more characters outside of its big 3. PT had Maul, Dooku, Grevious, Jango, Zam and Sebulba. The Clones were better soldiers. Kamino, Mustafar, Geonosis, Naboo, Coruscant were better planets. The galaxy was way more alive.

Also, PT has TCW to expand it's story. Rebels is set before OT and, going by rumours, the next animated series is post-RoTJ. Once ST has finished, the OT 'story' will seem pretty limited and vague - most of the action occurred before and after it.

I used to get caught up in these types of debates of what Trilogy is better then the other, etc. But TFA really made me reassess the whole Saga and it put a different perspective on it. I used to look at the OT & PT as 2 seperate trilogies, and I thought that was a bad thing. Now I see the OT, PT, and ST as 3 trilogies, and think its a good thing because you have a variety of different stories and characters.

The OT and ST are about the good guys as the OT was about Luke and the ST is about Rey. If the PT were about another good guy arc, then this saga would have gotten stale. But with the PT being about Anakin and his downfall, it gives the story a nice left turn to give a different perspective.

That's why I prefer 4,5,6,1,2,3,7,8,9. You go from a good guy story in Luke, to a grey guy story in Anakin back to a good guy story in Rey.

Then get an OT series started.
Luke, Han, Leia, Vader, Palpatine, Chewie, R2, C-3PO Mon Mothma, Bounty Hunters, Wedge Antilles, Ackbar, Veers, Jerjerrod, Riekkan, the Hutts, Mando's, Black Sun, stormtroopers, What have you.
You can't get stories from that cast? Highly doubt it.
They had an Indiana Jones type thing with Mace Windu and Jar Jar in TCW for crying out loud!
Luke looking for more Jedi stuff, Han meeting smuggler contacts, X-Wing vs. Tie-fighters, the creation of the A-Wing, Death Star 2 creation, Imperial officers doing missions, Rogue Squadron, The Bothans, looking for Hoth, stuff on Coruscant, and so much more.

Perhaps the greatest harm ever done to the PT was unfortunately born in its conception -- the constant comparisons to the OT. That was the hardest thing for the PT to ever deal with and I don't believe it has ever recovered from having to be compared to some of the greatest films in history. By instead trying experiment, trying to subvert expectations rather than simply fulfilling them, George doomed his new films to backlash before they even began.

With that said, I think it's a fair question to ask which trilogy is preferable to people. I think the real answer though is that they are totally different. So different, that I don't think they are comparable. While there is a lot of symmetry between trilogies, what the PT deals with is completely distinct from the OT. Different themes, different style, different look, different everything.

Overall, if I had to say which I love the most, I will have to go with the classical choice -- OT. But the PT has its own areas of beauty the OT doesn't try to touch. I suppose I see them as good at different things. If you can only appreciate one way, you probably won't appreciate the other. I appreciate both though. The OT is more basic, but beautiful in a very my gut tells me this is RIGHT way. It's an optimistic story of redemption and how people can grow from a place of darkness. For that, and for its style, I prefer the OT.

But the PT is beautiful in its own right, completely different from the OT. It's telling the downfall, the tragedy, of people and of their cherished institutions. It is a trilogy of nuance, of formality, of intrigue, of regal courtly drama. We are no longer dealing with the scrappy outsiders of the OT, travelling into the heart of darkness to redeem everything. No, we instead are dealing with the upper tops of society, the most inner circle, the wealthy and powerful institutions and individuals who are at the heart, but through corruption, they turn the galaxy dark. As you can see from that basic sketch, right off the bat (not even taking into consideration their visual look), the OT and PT are apples and oranges. So, it's all good, but best I think to see them as their own thing first and foremost.

As for TFA, well, we don't know where it's going yet. I would not at present rate it above any of the films so far.

If I had to choose a piece of music to most represent perhaps one of the most interesting and compelling things the PT offers, it would be this track. It is a vibe very unique to the PT -- the sense of growing intrigue and darkness -- and it pervades the films as a subtle subtext. It's not as full-on tragic like the last half of ROTS, but I feel it really represents the sense of unease about things. It has helped me to appreciate the AOTC (and TPM) on further rewatches. You can really pick up on it at times. It's what the PT is about -- festering corruption -- but it's not in your face, it's more nuanced, downplayed. You have to pick up on it and feel that mood. The cool part about it is, since it's nuanced and downplayed, when you notice it, you feel sort of like how the characters do in the film as they discover it. Pretty genius.

Don't be. Right now it's virtually impossible for it to get any votes. The poll mistakenly asks which is the best trilogy, even though the ST won't be a trilogy for another 4 years. Whoops.

I grew up with the prequels, but even as a kid, I've always liked more the originals... which are "ligther" and better movies. Then for a certain period of time I almost hated the PT for its flaws, but now I can see also the many positive things. I liked TFA as well, I put it at the same level of ROTJ and ROTS (more or less)
