Just a thought... why weren't they explored in the first place?

Well I belive this is part of the fact THEY WHERE explored early. Cizilizations like the chiss and Killian Rangers are desendents of modern humans. After time these areas of space where forgotten(most likly because there is no real planed hyperspace route. So nobody to the time to explore in sub-light.

Oh, and they are also assumed highly barbaric and dangerous, not many explorers have come back.
Yet the Empire made several large expiditions along with the Old Republic, like the Outbound. Onfortunatly we are yet to be given a glimce of what they saw other then the events in Command Dicision by Timothy Zahn.

In this short story you see a glimce at barbarian UR life.

"If you keep mapping the Unknown Regions you're going to have to call them something else"-Wedge, Starfighters of Adumar

The unknown regions were like chissdude said, settled early by some means or another. They weren't explored for various resions, like risky hyperspace routes, fables & legions (spacers are very suserstious), and the GCW.
