Anakin hated Obi-Wan because he had become the embodiment of all his problems. The Jedi took him away from his mother when he was a boy. At least that's how he views it. Nevermind that Anakin is one of the rare individuals that actually chose to take upon himself the mantle of a Jedi and go with Qui-Gon to Coruscant to be trained. For Anakin, the Jedi were possibilities of power. He entertained ideas as a Padawan of actually obtaining the power to stop people from dying. It's almost as if the Jedi dangled this power in front of him and when it came time for him to actually acquire this perceived power, the Jedi stripped it away from him.

Obi-Wan held him back...or so he thought...from achieving this power. Therefore, when all was lost for Anakin, when he fell to the hot, sandy bank on Mustafar and started to self-immolate, he could yell, "I hate you!" Personally I don't think it was a narrow condemnation of Obi-Wan Kenobi per se. I think it was more a condemnation of the Jedi Order generally and what that had appeared to have done to the young Anakin Skywalker. He hated the Jedi for tempting him with power. They trained him, used his abilities and to Anakin, cast him off when it came time for the prophecy to be fulfilled.

Anakin could have reasonably believed that when Mace was going to take out Palpatine that the time had come for him to achieve his destiny as the Chosen One. Yet Mace left him behind. Talk about a slight! Anakin knew full well about the prophecy and what the Chosen One was supposed to do. He knew that he was to be the one to destroy the Sith and yet he was not given the chance...at least initially until he again chose to intervene. When he did intervene he was found to be seriously lacking in the character and morality necessary to overcome evil as a Jedi Knight.

    :)

Ani needed someone to blame for everything that brought him
to that pt. and who else would he blame but the person whose
been like a father figure, Obi-Wan.
I don't think Ani gets any clarity into what he is actually
responsible for and I believe he holds onto that hate for the
next 20 yrs b/c he obviously can't wait to confront Obi again
on the death star. I believe if Ani had his way Obi would
have been cut down on Mustafar.

This is a very interesting perspective. If Anakin had indeed fulfilled the prophecy at this point (not to say that he necessarily would have), he would surely have been made a master and been able to find a way to save Padme which in his mind was still the great motivator for keeping Palps alive. Opens the door to a lot of other possibilities. He's already done what he was supposed to do, so could have left the Order and raised babies with Padme on Naboo.

But back to the topic at hand...his supposed hatred was a reflection of his frustration with the Order as a whole. Obi-Wan just happened to the the embodiment of the Jedi at that point.

Anakin's turn which directly led to Padme's demise. Sure, we don't know what would have happened had Anakin stayed true to the Jedi precepts but what we do know is that because Anakin turned he injured his wife, she lost the will to live, and she died. A reasonable assumption is that had he remained a Jedi he never would have had to attain the power to save his wife because she would not have died in the manner which he foresaw.

NoOne is absolutely right. Had Anakin not been a subject of his own greed and blindness in love he would've been okay.

Sarcasm aside, it IS a good question... Would Anakin have shouted the SAME if he'd NOT have been injured?
I LOVE the book, Anakin offers Obi-Wan a chance to LEAVE before he kills him. It shows that he LOVED Obi-Wan. I can't BUY the HATE other than his SCREAMING in a fit of passion over the loss of his limbs... Obi-Wan was EVERYTHING to him.

He was JEALOUS of Obi-Wan, no doubt, but I don't think that would have caused hate... he's a Sith-Lord now, Jedi are his sworn enemy, don't know, that's a stretch too...

Well as you said, the Novel goes into this more. Basically Palpatine made Anakin not trust Obi-Wan, or any other Jedi. He made it look like the Jedi were lying to him the entire time and just using him.

Plus, it DOES NOT help things when Obi-Wan shows up on Padmé's ship. In Anakin's mind it helps support the idea of Obi-Wan lying to him, plus it makes Padmé look like a liar too.

Anakin's perspective is blurred, so he hates Obi-Wan because he thinks he was used and lied to.

Anakin Skywalker did all of this to himself.

Anakin did do everything to himself...and he did it because he was motivated out of his greed and will to dominate. He failed in so many ways to maintain a proper perspective of what was galactically important and was ultimately less important. Anakin placed himself at the center of the galaxy. He thought it revolved around him! Of course, this led to irrational decisions which he probably regretted to a certain extent once he learned that he had, in fact, killed his wife.

His hatred for Obi-Wan was fueled out of all these machinations which led to his fall. I do not undervalue either, the power and deft deception and manipulation exerted by Palpatine over the young Jedi. He was truly a master manipulator and Anakin walked right into his trap. Palpatine preyed on Anakin's emotions, altered them, molded them, so he would hate the Jedi and all that they stood for. He began to perceive the Jedi order as deceitful and twisted. He saw them as hiding precious secrets from him...THE CHOSEN ONE! To Anakin this was intolerable and made the Jedi seem more and more evil than they truly were. As a result, he started to loathe the order and all the Jedi teachings which had, from his perspective, torn everything he held dear to him apart. The Jedi's detached teachings of no attachment, to Anakin Skywalker, destroyed all that he loved and was, appropriately enough, attached to. From this angle, Anakin's hatred is much more understandable...even though it ultimately remains irrational and contrived by the dark side.

Just the heat of the moment. He is speaking from his immediate emotions.

"The Sith rely on their PASSION for their strength. They think inwardly; only of themselves."

I agree with the overconfident-just-out-of-the-teenage-years theory.

He is responding like many young adults still sometimes respond because they are just out of their teenage years. He speaks whatever is on his mind at the moment.

He was even willing to let Obi-Wan live at one point regardless of what the Emperor wanted him to do.

    "Don't make me kill you."

He somewhat expected Obi-Wan to understand his position, but once Obi-Wan engages him in battle, he feels betrayed by the one Jedi he thought he could trust.

Which I blame on Obi-Wan. I always figured Obi-Wan would have done whatever he COULD NOT to battle Anakin because of their friendship, instead he climbs down the ship's ramp, shedding his robe, says "I will do what I must and pulls his lightsaber.
I'd always imagined Obi-Wan PLEADING with Anakin to come back! He was the CHOSEN ONE! Obi-Wan and Yoda would NEED HIM!

Yes, I know what you're saying. Obi-Wan did want him to come back, it's just Anakin was all like "Hey, if your like not with me, then you're my enemy, k?" I think Obi-Wan figured there was no way Anakin would reason with logic at that point ... he's too enraged.

Plus, I don't remember someone holding a gun to Anakin's head when he was doing all his dark deeds. Sure he was being pulling in a thousand different directions, but it is still on Anakin to control himself for the sake of the people he loves. He didn't.

"Anger Numbs the Mind" Ancient Chinese Proverb.

That pretty much defines Anakin's ability to reason. Padme arrives to Mustafar with doubts about Anakin and this swells the resentment inside him, then Obi Wan appears and now Anakin feels betrayed, and like most all of us, betrayal leads to feelings of anger and isolation. Anakin's confrontation with Obi Wan is fueled by that anger and resentment; it's personal not political. Once he's defeated fair and square by Obi Wan, he's really pissed because now his sense of self sufficiency has been shattered by a bitter defeat. This makes Obi Wan the symbol of all that he hates and perhaps it's that anger and hatred that fueled Vader for the 20 or so years between Ep 3 and 4 to serve the Empire since his motivation to save Padme was gone.

Once Anakin lets go of his anger; he sees the clarity of all that has happened.

Anakin's failure to control his emotions, to check his ambitions, and to halt his desire for domination caused all of the pain and suffering his family and "friends" underwent.

Because Padawans have a "special" relationship with thier masters, and when he thought obi was with Padme, it was a crazy love triangle and he was on the wrong end both ways. Or not, just a theory.

Actually I read that when they were making this scene GL originally had Anakin pleading with Obi Wan "Master, please help me..." as he was clawing (with his one arm)to get back up the sand and Obi Wan refuses, saying something to the extent that he "can't" help him anymore and Anakin yells "I hate you" at that point. As the scene progressed, GL changed Obi Wan's lines to the ones you here in the movie where he yells "you were the chosen one..." and then you here Anakin yell his line. The latter would have been much more emotional, but I think people would have really 'hated' Obi Wan for just turning his back on Anakin while he's begging for his help... bad enough to see him leave him the way he did.

It was hate for 13 years, cumuliating in his final outburst. Obi-wan kept him from his mother. Obi-wan didn't listen to him. Obi-wan held him back. Obi-wan was turning Padme against him. Obi-wan made him choke Padme. Now, Obi-wan left him maimed on the bank.

She's his wife. She's supposed to support him no matter what. Just as she did with the Tusken Slaughter. She had no problem with him killing Jedi, now all of a sudden, she does? She keeps talking about Obi-wan. Obi-wan this, Obi-wan that. He was sick of hearing his name. Then, lo and behold, who does he see standing at the entrance ramp, but Obi-wan Kenobi. So he was convinced that she betrayed him, because he was letting his emotions run out of control. It all suddenly clicked. He came to her to talk about him. She started talking like a Separatist. Now there he is after talking about what had transpired hours earlier. He's so convinced that he's in the right, that he doesn't realize how horribly wrong he was.

Obi-wan tried to reason with Anakin. Tried to get Anakin to see what he was doing was wrong. That he was the one that got Padme to turn on him. Then he tried to get him to see that Palpatine's twisted his mind. But Anakin wouldn't listen, so it was on like Donkey Kong. And at the very end, Obi-wan came out and said that Palpatine was evil, but Anakin wouldn't believe it. So, he was lost to him.

He did try to reason with Anakin. Tried to get him to see the folly of his thinking. But he failed, so he had no choice but to do what he did.

Because he felt personally betrayed by him. Obi-Wan refused to join him, and he felt angry. And the simple fact that he had his limbs cut off, and he was going to burn alive...;)

    You are joking, aren't you?

What did Obi-Wan do to Ani?
Erm, were you even looking at the screen as Anakin delivered that line?
Next time you watch it - here are some things to note:
    1) The lack of legs on Anakin's body
    2) The lack of arms on Anakin's body
    3) The flow of lava he is lying inches away from
    4) The horribly burned flesh which covers Anakin's body
    5) Anakin's own smugness as Obi warned him "not to try it"
    6) Obi's being rather lax in the "helping Ani with any of the above" stakes while being rather big on the "walking away and picking up Ani's saber" front

At the end of the Duel, Anakin really, truly hated Obi-Wan, because in one instant, Anakin's dream of being the most powerful person ever (after he had killed Palpatine) was over. He knew that he could never defeat Palpatine by himself again. All his life, Anakin did want to be the "most powerful" ever. And now it was over!

I don't agree that Anakin had "hated" Obi-Wan for 13 years. "Hate" is a strong term. His emotional response to Obi-Wan had always been very mixed: love, resentment, jealousy, admiration, wanting his approval, wanting to be better than him. He never stops talking about Obi-Wan in AotC and the OT. But on the lava banks of Mustafar, for the first time, he really HATED Obi-Wan - and that's when he was fully gone to the Dark Side. I think Lucas has said something like this in the Making Of book.

Anakin does not "hate" Obi-Wan. Look at the sadness in his eyes as he is crawling, helpless. It is only after Obi turns away that he says "I HATE YOU!". I believe Anakin merely uses obi-wan as a scapegoat for all of his own failings, and I do not believe he hates obi.

He doesn't really hate him, but he says it out of anger and frustration.

    [face_not_talking] [face_shame_on_you] [face_not_talking] [face_shame_on_you] [face_not_talking]

when i see his face i dont see sadness and frustration,i see so much anger and hate that i know i could never be so angry as he was in that moment,i know most people disagree but i think that his hate toward obi wan was completely honest.i think that in that exact moment he hated everybody except for padme(and i cant be sure he didnt hate her too in that precise moment when he was crawling in the sand)
