During the fight between Luke and Vader aboard the second Death Star, Luke eventually beat Vader and cut off his hand.

My question is, why did he scream? His hand was mechanical, so I don't imagine that it would really cause him any pain?

Remember at the end of ESB when Luke gets his knew hand and has the pin thing pressed onto it, he clearly feels some pain from that so its safe to assume Vader can feel through his. Which makes sense since a hand where you didn't have a sense of touch wouldn't be that useful.

You might also take a look at this page - there's a ton of good information there. :)

    Hope that helps!

Although mechanical limbs are fixed to human's in the SW universe, those robotic limbs are attached to a module that is connected to one's nervous system. This is why Luke and Vader are able to feel pain.

I read that in either Shatter Point or Labyrinth of Evil. It referred to Anakin and his mechanical hand.

In the ROTS visual dictionary it says that Anakin's mechanical hand was upgraded with technology that allows him to have some feeling. I'm guessing that he had the same type of upgrade in ROTJ.

When attempting to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine, Luke is actually shot in his artificial hand and he feels pain. When a mechanical hand is attached to the wrist, during the operation, the surgeons fit it with a module to give them feeling in that hand, even if it's not flesh and bone.

I also recall Luke yelping in pain when his mechanical hand is shot on Jabba's barge, so there is continutiy there. Definetly not a mistake.

Isn't it amazing that Vader lost all 4 limbs through out his life? The hand from RoTJ was the 2nd time he'd lost a limb from that same arm too.

    Anyway, good question.

Aside from his physical pain I'm sure he was also feeling some surprise.I'm also pretty sure he was having some flaskbacks....[face_thinking]

Either that or thinking to himself "dammit, this losing limbs thing sure is getting old."

There's also a feedback issue. If the circuits shorted out and sent a pulse of current up into his Biological upper torso, that might have hurt like hell. Plus muscle seizures along the the connection points too.

I think Vader is used to the pain by this time. Just think of how much he has gone through. And I don't think it's the primary reason he screams.

The reason Vader screams is probably more because he is resigning to a sense of defeat and is finally grudgingly accepting humbleness. It's like a burst of emotion coming out after realizing that for decades he has been fooling himself into thinking he's invincible through the darkside.

You know what else I noticed?

Anakin did not scream at all when Count Dooku cut off his arm, HIS ARM!

And in Episode III, Count Dooku only didn't even let let out a peep when his hands were cut off?

I know getting hit by a lightsaber must hurt because when Obi-Wan was cut in Episode II, he yelled.

Everyone doesn't have the same stimulus. Some people are impervious to pain or have a high tolerance for pain.

    So what about Anakin?

In Episode II, he lost his entire arm and didn't yell.

In Episode VI, he was mostly mechanical, lost just his hand but yelled.

^I don't think that was a yell. I think it was more of a grunt, almost as if Vader were thinking: "Fine! You beat me! I give up! Don't kill me!"

Notice that his left hand is up in the air (If i can remember) as if he's saying: "Don't kill me...Luke...I'm unarmed!"

It makes me believe that he knew he was defeated and could no longer fight back and that was bad because he had a son who was on a beserk rage at the time.

Semi off-topic. But, does Anakin have a Duracell Battery in his Ep. 3 arm? And does anyone have a shot of it?

He passed out immediately due to the pain when his arm was cut off. Can't yell if you aint concious.

From what i gather in the SW universe, artifical body parts are connected to the end nervous of the cutoff body part..

That way the artifical arm works like a normal arm taking its cues from the central nervous system and brain.

The artifical arm works like real arm. A person can sense hot, cold and yes pain...

When vaders arm was cut off, it was like his real arm being cut off.

Remember in Clone wars cartoon, part 25 when anakin was trying to save the enslaved tribe? he used his mechanical arm to destroy that gem and ended up blowing off his arm.. He scream when that happen.
