Having Zam be a Changeling is simply another way of Lucas reminding the audience that not everything is as it appears -- an on-going theme in the prequels (and in the entire Star Wars saga). Disguises and dual identities are common elements in all the movies. In ANH, Obi-Wan first appears to be a crazy desert hermit, but later is revealed to be a General and a great Jedi Knight. In Jedi, Leia enters Jabba's palace disguised as a bounty hunter. I could go on and on. Having Zam be a Changeling is just another variation of a reoccurring theme.

Because...it let George put even MORE CGI in the movie. I swear, Lucas must get off on CGI. LOL.

    The answer is WHY NOT.

Making her an alien would be one thing. Making her an alien with a power she could easily use to escape her situation, yet seems to forget about, is something else entirely. It feels tacked on because it was tacked on, in post, without any consideration for how it affected the scene.

What if Obi-Wan was a shapeshifter who never shapeshifted? Would you say "why not?" to that too?

"Zaius, please tell me you're joking. That doesn't make any sense; she's trying to stay inconspicuous, so she starts running around breathing fire?

    Nah."

lol, you're on to me ;)

but that would have been funny. i started cracking up when your queston.
    "running around breathing fire"
    just picture it!!! hahahaha....

btw. Zam being a changling is cool and my only problem is that she should have changed in the night club... but anakin already knew she was a changling. so it prolly wouldnt have helped much.. ( she prolly figured that too. which is why she tryed to kill obi, instead of hiding)

Zam is a changeling because her mother and father also were. What, you think they should have given birth to a random, different species?

Becuase if she was human then lil Boba wouldn't have to be geneticly made and us Fett fans would have to imagine our selves as Zam if we wanted to be with Jango...
Wow, for once Lucas actually thought of the Fett fans!

Seriously, if Zam had been some kind of close friend of Jango (and human), Lucas could have menipulated it in to how Boba was made. Which in turn would alter the story. On the flip side it might have also taken away from the Jango character.
By making her a shape shifter it is less likly that their friendship was any thing more then a commen bond. Hence keeping it all nice and PG.

Remember, there is no "natural creation" in the Star Wars Movies Universe. Every one is either mysteriously born (anakin), cloned (Boba), or brought into existence by his greatness, George Lucas.

Bingo! Look at Mystique in "X-Men": they established her as a changeliing, and she puts her powers to good use. By contrast, Zam was hiding in the bar in human form, she didn't try to change and slip out or anything. Huh??? Then why the powers?

She didn't really have the opportunity to use her shapechanging. Besides do you think that would've really fooled a Jedi?

They might have been introduced so we will accept someone who turns out to be a shapeshifter/changeling in EPS III. Who could that be?

"She didn't really have the opportunity to use her shapechanging."

Come on; she was in a dark, crowded room. The only reason Obi caught her is because she walked right up to him.

They blocked the scene as if she weren't a changeling, then decided to make her one after the fact, which throws the logic of the scene out of whack. It's the same as if the ESB post crew had suddenly decided that Luke could fly, but let him fall regardless.

Okay, while tryign to make logic out of a film is unlogical I will do so any ways-

Lets say Zam actually exists and this hole thing actually happend. Why would a Star Wars shape shiffting bounty hunter walk right up to a Jedi with out shape shiffting or why not just run away ect.
On the one hand Jango told Zam no more mistakes (or some thing to that extent) when he sent her on this mission. This would probably lead her to fight a fleet of Jedi (if she felt she could survive) then Jango (becuase she sure isn't going to survive him). That and possibly some kind of honor she might have or any number of other reasons might have her face Obi and Anakin then run away.
Now why not shape shift if your going to fight a Jedi?
What would it matter!? Their Jedi! They can sense these things. If you have a weapon and are going to attack a trained Jedi no matter what you look like their force abilities will probably alert them to the fact.

And that ladys and gentlemen are my conclusions on why Zam dosn't shape shift and why she dosn't sneak out.

Obi wan was sitting there having a drink cause he knew anakin could sence the assisin just using his jedi powers.. Zam trapped herslf in there and it wouldnt matter if she shapeshifted or not.. they could still find her.. thats why ben just let anakin do the looking... it was just a simple task of "reading" every one in there.
Zam prolly realized this and that why she "walked right up to" ben. cause she knew she wasnt goign to be able to hide.. she was going to kill obi and try to run outta there.

Also, even if she changed shape, she'd still be wearing the same clothes, and that outfit wasn't exactly inconspicuous. Remember, the only person who caught a glimpse of her face was Anakin, so Obi-Wan (and Anakin, to some extent) would recognize her by what she was wearing, since that was the extent of what they saw.

It's the subconcious past of the human species. We evolved from a scaley reptilian past,it's the R-complex. Also Eve and the snake in one.
She has the blood of reptile just underneath her skin seeds from a thousand others deep down from within.- NIN.
Plus remember the Replicant in Blade Runner, the snakecharmer who takes pleasure from the serpent that Deckard chases down.

Why was she a changeling? Because ol'GL thought it'd be a neat addition. Changelings being one of the few SF basic SF creatures not yet represented in Star Wars.

It made sense for a changeling to be a bounty hunter.

The idea of a changeling was discussed earlier on during pre-production with the idea of a possible Changeling Sith as the new apprentice being a promienet one. It is obvious that this idea was discarded for the Sith but applied to a new bounty hunter. It is pretty obvious from circumstantial evidence that Aura Sing was to be the assasin hired by Jango but this was then also discarded and the character turned into the changeling Zam Wesell.

I think it was pretty cool how they let the audience get a first hint of her shapechanging abilities.
When Anakin is struggling to remain on top
of her speeder her face changes just for a short while. The first time i saw AoTC,i blinked my eyes at that moment, and was wondering if i saw what i thought i saw.

Anyway, there is an Aqualish senator among the separatists who is a Shi´do shapechanger.
    What is that?
