Why do cartoon characters only have four fingers ?

Anyone else wonder about this ?

Probably because the cartoonists are too lazy to draw five fingers.

 

I thought the same thing, but would drawing and animating an extra finger slow down the process that much ?

Millions saved only drawing 4 fingers! Enough so they don't look freakish, enough to save money!

The reason why "cartoony" cartoon characters have four fingers is aestetics. Walt Disney originally drew Mickey Mouse with five fingers,but to him,it didn't look right,so one had to go.

Same reason the arachnids in Starship troopers have only 6 legs, not 8. I heard a sequel was coming out...well, it was mentioned in a preview of the rather delicious looking new game.
