I think many of them were raised to go to church and do have some connection to the concept of God. But I think they ignore the teachings of God because it would get in the way of living the "fast" life and making money. But when they accept their awards, they go back to being thankful to God. They rationalize their success as being "a blessing" from Him.

Psychologist would call this cognitive dissonence, which means trying to reconcile what you believe with your actions that are contrary to those beliefs.

Let's get back to the original question of the post.

Now the majority of all rap is filth that talks about stuff like rape, drive by shootings, drugs, killing... And the rappers all wear big diamond studded crosses and give to praise God and their mama for keeping them on the right track... Why do they have to lie? Who are they kidding?

Since whte rappers are not very common lets take one that we all know Eminem (more hip-hop, but still. And let's add some other people who sing songs with these types of themes - Slayer, Manson, Slipknot... None of these guys go around with diamond studded crosses and go around thanking God. Why? Because they know it's a lie and that they look stupid saying it.

I'm not being racist or anything but if you look at the music industry it's the black people (almost all rappers) who do this kind of hypocritical stuff. Why? Beats me.

I always thought they were keeping it real, telling us what it's like to be on the streets, man. No doubt.

I agree Beastie Boys are good. But their lyrics are not like most of the rap out there.

    Vanilla Ice???

    Speaking of sampling...

Just think of all the idiots that say "Hey! They stole that from Vanilla Ice!" when they hear "Under Pressure" from Queen.

I like rap, mostly of the dirty south variety, although I like 2pac and some others, as well.
Some rap has alot of meaning, but most is just fun to listen to. Nothing wrong with that.

I do find it somewhat hypocritical that some rappers who rap about activities seemingly contary to Christian values often thank God in their speeches, album liners, etc.

For example on the inside of a Project Pat(or maybe it was 666 mafia), DJ Paul and Juicy "J", who are called the super producers and the checkwriters, said something to the effect of"Thanks to God, the superest producer and the biggest checkwriter". [face_plain]

I'm not even a Christian and it gets on my nerves.

TPM has a poor choice in music :(
Most rap is terrible, but not all. Rap isn't even singing either. Most rappers have TERRIBLE voices, gold teeth, and bad language. Definitely not the music God would of choosen for us to listen to.

You think God doesn't love rappers as much. Hmmm...that's a pretty hypocritical, intolerant God.

Do any of us actually know what its like to live in the hood? Not exactly.

    Let me get this straight:
So its not hypocritical to be a white who is a bigot b/c of misinterpreting stuff in the Bible to be Christian, but it is hypocritical for a rapper who had a past of violence, drugs and sex to be Christian, and who may have gotten past all that and is now very successful, very rich, etc.. Like Iverson says, that's what he was surrounded by growing up, that's what he talks about. Does God not condone honesty? What should rappers do? Talk about how 'great' their lives were when they were growing up? Most rappers are rags to riches kind of things, Jay-Z is a perfect example of this. Some of his rap is about the tough times, some of his rap is about the good times, some of his rap combines them.

Pope Alexander VI had a child WITH HIS DAUGHTER, Lucretia. The POPE. Before that, he would have sex with women in his bed with his daughter nearby in the bed, just sitting there. To cover up his daughter being pregnant by him, he said it was an IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. Twice. The second time they weren't sure if Alexander had impregnated Lucretia, or her brother.

White rappers popularity is a sign of some of the prejudice in this country. In terms of lyrics, beats, rhymes, etc., there hasn't been a great white rapper until the recent Bubba Sparks - and lets not forget that Timbaland should get a good deal for his popularity, as well as many others(Best Producer Ever). Trust me since I go to High School, there are tons of white kids who will listen to Eminem but not a single note of another rap song.

    Cydonia,
I don't get it. Are you trying to say my posted lyrics aren't good?

    Saint,
Yeah, Ludicrous rocks. So does Nelly and the St. Lunatics, but I guess they are Mid West.

Do you guys like good ol' rock? [sarcasm] because as we know, rock artists have never sworn, never used drugs, and are all virgins. [/sarcasm]

Arg, I shouldn't of posted. What I was saying was that God probably wouldn't approve of language, drugs, killing, ect. . . It's all mentioned in the Ten Commandments.

Here's the deal: I'm not saying they are hypocrites because they sinned. Everyone sins. I'm saying they are hypocrites because they don't show any signs of repentance, which is one of the key parts of the Christian doctrine.

I think we need to avoid generalizing all rap as what we see on MTV and hear on the radio. I can appreciate a lot of rap, but what gets a lot of air play usually isn't good and doesn't contain the best of messages. Generalizing all rap as being like Jay-Z's music is like generalizing all rock as being like Limp Bizkit, and we all know that would be silly. That's just my two cents...

most rap is really really terrible. i mean that. really really really terrible. it was good, Back In The Day (i.e., pre-gangsta rap), but now its really bad. itll get better tho. all things do. like, for example, look at the state of rock music circa 1987-89. it was an abomination before the lord and anybody else who listens to music (did god listen to ratt? i think so. :)) then it got better. now it kinda sucks again, but thats not the point. rap will get better. there are already some comforting signs, like common and jurassic 5 (the greatest rap group on earth. im gonna be the cut chemist when i grow up. before im president. or maybe the same time. itd be funny, ill tell you what). the beta band, while not really rap all the time, are apparently a bunch of english dudes who listened to a lotta rap growing up, and there's a rap song (of sorts. it samples "1 is the lonliest number", i dunno. its weird, but then again, its the beta band, so...) on "Hot Shots Part II".

    topic? what topic? :)

Name me a rock arist who sings about killing, raping, doing drugs... and then thanks god in public and wears big diamond studded crosses.

For everyone that exist there are probably 100 rappers and rapper wannabes.

Now I don't say rock artists don't swear... I listen to Korn personally. And some of their lyrics aren't exactly the greatest in the world. But Jon Davis doesn't go around praising God for his success....

Now a band like POD does (read the credits on their new album). But then look at their lyrics as a whole, from their first album. It's actually believeable when they say they thank God for being a part of their lifes.

It's not very believable when a lot of these rappers do it, in light of their lyrics.

And now for some one other than Suburbian kids to defend Rap music.
I do think that it is not right for rappers to do it then again I do not think any music preformer to thank god unless you sing gosel. It is very on sided to say it is wrong for rappers to say it but say it is wrong for say... Britney Spheres to.

One more thing a gangbang and a drive-by are two very differnt things...

I've always wondered about it too, although it doesn't just apply to rappers, really.

I suppose I'm going through that stage where everything is "hypocritical", but I'm hoping to grow out of it.

In the meantime, a lot of religion today is more spiritual and less and less discernable if you're going merely by the deeds of a person. Who's to say these people you mentioned aren't remembering God every minute that they can? I do, but you wouldn't be able to tell it just from my actions.
