During the Dooku duel, when Obi-Wan slices up the super battle droids, Palpy yells out with an audible "Yeah!" Why would he do that? Why would he cheer Obi-Wan not being killed, when later on he urges Anakin to leave Obi-Wan to die?

    Because he's maaaaad.

He's enjoying the fight perhaps? He forsee's Dooku's kick!

I just think he's loopy! Though its probably just part of the facade.

To me, that seemed very out of character for Palpatine. He very likely already knew that Anakin would defeat and kill Dooku. So why would he do that?

His plan is coming to fruition. All of it - but mainly potentially losing Obi-Wan and gaining Anakin as his apprentice.

He was trying to appear all "Horray Jedi Knights, defeat the evil Count Dooku and defend Democracy and all things good and just!"
Plus he is a bit insane anyway.
He does enjoy duels, look at return of the Jedi.

No, the cheer was him not being able to hide his Sith excitement from underneath from his outside personnae of Palpatine.

what bothered me in the duel though was how you could tell the battle droids were added using cgi when obi wan faces them. we see them blasting like hell down the stairs towards obi-wan, and he just strolls towards them not bothering to use his saber to block the oncoming lasers.

He is still the chancellor. He needs to look like he wants the jedi to win.

The fight serves dual purposes. He can cheer because the Jedi are saving him and because he'll be able to swap out Sith apprentices.

He is still the chancellor. He needs to look like he wants the jedi to win.

But they're too busy fighting Dooku to notice Palpy. This is why I find it strange for him to be cheering when nobody's watching him.

Maybe he was cheering at the Battle Droids shooting at Obi-Wan. He said "Yeah" and suddenly stopped at the end because he realized Obi-Wan took care of those droids.

    I'm just guessing though.

I think it's a case of him almost believing the lie. The only way he can disguise himself from the Jedi is to almost completely immerse himself in the role of Palpatine (as opposed to Sidious). He has a somewhat schizophrenic ability to fully adopt the personality of Palpatine instead of simply 'acting'.

i was wondering this too. the only explanation I can think of is that if someone who never saw the OT would assume this chancellor guy is one of them, a good guy. In the point of a fan who's only watched PT prior to ROTS, there's no foreshadowing palpatine as a sith lord. We all know what was going to happen because we watched OT, but in the point of view of a fan who has no clue wat's going to happen, its a drop off from him being a sith. Gives people who dont know what's going to happen a surprise later when he starts wielding sabers at mace. :)

"Palpatine rather hoped that Anakin was going to leave Obi-Wan during the kidnapping, but Anakin is an honorable man and Obi-Wan is his greatest friend, so Anakin insists that he bring him along."

--Ian McDiarmid, Star Wars Insider #82.

"But throughout Revenge of the Sith, it is really Palpatine's plot right from the beginning, from the kidnap that he himself arranged. Palpatine has ARRANGED PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING IN THE FILM except, I suppose, the final duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan."

When Obi-Wan was running up the stairs, the battle droids were trying to hit him, but kept missing. Then, one shot ricocheted off of his lightsaber and killed the droid standing behind. Obi-Wan then sliced and diced the other droid as he was running past.

Guys, this is how it is. It doesn't make sense any other way:

Palpatine had this entire plan to take Anakin and turn the Republic into an Empire for decades. He managed to plan everything down to the most minute details. It would require a perfect act on his part to throw everyone off as to what he really was.

Because of his great attention to detail, he must act like he is just a chancellor under all circumstances, whether he has someone watching him or not. A kidnapped chancellor would cheer for his rescuers, regardless of whether or not they could hear him, just because he is excited that he might be saved.

It's just the simple fact that Palpatine is a master of deception.

That would make sense, too. Look at the scene where Palpatine takes Anakin as his apprentice. "Gooooood", haha. He looks so high there.
