In A New Hope, Vader is standing behind Tarkin and says, "This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the end of Kenobi and will soon see the end of the rebellion."

Tarkin then gives Vader a funny look.....just wondering why?

I know what you are talking about. Really not sure what was up with Tarkin. Maybe he thought Vader was giving Obiwan too much credit - he didn't seem to respect force-users. Or maybe he thought Vader was going to jinx things by boasting before their success.

I think maybe he was worried that Vader was becoming unpredictible (like going out and shooting rebel X-Wings when he should be standing next to Tarken.) And maybe he was trying to think of a new way to bring him back under his own control.

I was too wondering about that when i watched anh the other day.. my best guess is maybe tarkin is thinking that vader is thinking too much of obi-wan and the rebels.. (his past as anakin, and he is thinking like anakin not vader, because vader didnt know obi-wan ,anakin did,(if you want to split them up, which some people do.)just a guess.I guess this is one of those things where we have to go with our own interpertation(sp).:)

If you've been on a twelve hour shift during a time of crisis you'd be holding it in too.

This scene always makes me laugh, like Tarkins thinking that they have bigger problems than the Rebel alliance. The scene makes Vader looks crazy and obsessed
"Man, is he still going on about that Obi Wan guy?Let it go!"

Maybe Vader had different dialogue for that scene and perhaps it was rewritten after the scene was filmed. Makes you wonder what alternative dialogue could have been in the scene if it was changed.

I also noticed in the scene where Vader speaks to Tarkin in the meeting room Vader is still gesturing with his hand long after the dialogue is spoken.

Yeah, I have often thought it was odd. First it's a sign of skepticism. Like Tarkin is saying, "oh really? That's a bit presumptuous." or "Hmmm, you could be right." But then later he's more like you would expect him to be, "Evacuate!? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances." But I'm thinking it may tie into Vader's line earlier, "Don't be so proud of this technological terror you have constructed." Here, Vader is critical of them being so confident about victory over the rebellion with the Death Star and now it's Vader who is seemingly forgetting that and coming over to their (Tarkin's) way of thinking (or confidence in the Death Star). So he raises the eyebrow to say, "Oh, really? Do you know that you just contradicted yourself?" or rather, "You see, I was right all along."

I always thought it was possibly quite the opposite - jealousy and contempt for Vader collecting the bounty and glory for a man who has been on the Most Wanted List for 20 + years. It would be like some military commander's subordinate officer 20 years from now capturing Osama Bin Laden, and then rubbing it in his superior officer's face.

Vader and Tarkin were very much competitors for the Emperor's favor, just as Vader and Xizor in Shadows of the Empire. Even though other men in the Empire may not have been Sith or Force Sensitives, they could still impress Palpatine and gain more favor. It was almost like currency when you consider the hierarchy. In the Empire, pleasing the Big Man was the surest path to a life of comfort and wealth. As such, I believe a large number of men and women hated and detested Vader, if only secretly. Tarkin had a lot to lose by being upstaged by Vader.

I agree, Tarkin kinda gives the look like Vader should just let it go, its been over 20 years. Then again he could be thinking that Vaders underestimating him, just like on Mustafar.

I'm pretty sure that Tarkin was just intended to give him a silent agreement. I mean, he's just not the kind of villain who goes "Yes, now our evil plans will be fulfilled! Muahahaha!" so he just gives him the look.

Now that I think about it, I may agree with the "dude, get OVER it" sentiment. Consider the number of times that Vader mentions "Obi Wan" in the OT.

In fact..how many times does he specifically tell Luke "Obi Wan has taught you well.."

I imagine the people around him found his fixation with old Ben a little less than endearing.

I think its just a case of..*hides* well not very good acting on Cushing's part. He didn't give a right reaction and now it looks kinda funny and out of place. Probably due to JEJ's voice being added later.

I think the reason for his look is that Tarkin feels Vader puts to much importance into the death of Kenobi.

"You my friend is all that is left of their religion"

but on the other hand he also seems to see Kenobi as an important remnant of the old Republic
"If he is here, he must not be allowed to escape"

so frankly I am a tad confused about Tarkins view on Kenobi.

In the ANH novelization, Vader thinks about how one day people like Tarkin or Motti would be disposed of. Add to this that Tarkin was considering turning the Death Star on the Emperor and you have a potentially paranoid Tarkin picking up some hidden meaning behind Vader's words.

Beside that, I think Tarkin found Vader's opinion of Kenobi's importance to be unsettling.

I think what Cushing was trying to show in this scene is someone who almost believes that what's happening is too good to be true. I'm sure what Tarkin wanted to act like was a newly crowned Miss America but has repressed his emotions for so long he wasn't sure how to react to the news that all his dreams were about to come true. So he settled for a "we'll see" kind of attitude. He's also put his confidence in Vader in tracking the Falcon and now he's actually in the process of letting himself believe that this is going to happen. By the time he's warned of the danger he's convinced himself that this is inevitable and he will be making the Emperor so happy.

Because it's a stupid thing to say. No one talks like that, and Tarkin is calling him on it. And who is he talking to anyway?

Tarkin, being a military man and bureaucrat, is just kind of thrown off by the line. He probably deals with logistical and political issues all day. Then here comes Darth Vader, international man of mystery, talking about ancient religions, long-lost Jedi Knights, and how everything is tied to the Force. Tarkin just thinks that Vader is a relic of sorts.
