We are using paintball guns in our film. We just rip them apart, make some additions to them, paint them differently... and we've got a cool looking Star Wars gun that you can't really tell is a paintball gun unless you are an idiot and wanna just stare at the film forever to see if it is one or not. We are also using some old water guns, too.

Yo DyeJedi... was that my movie? cause in metal gear solid 3 the hero "whips out a paintball gun to shoot through a window to kill a driver" then proceeds to use paintball guns throughout the rest of the movie.

Why is paintball stuff so popular as props?

We had a zero dollar budget, and brothers who like paintball.

    Simple question, simple answer.

Well, I happened to be watching you'res at the time, yes.

If it's customized, disguised, or revamped in anyway that doesn't make me think "Hmm, wonder how often they play?" that's fine. You could use barrel tips as barrels for autoblaster cannons, they fit the part, but just stock from the store stuff? Too easy.

I don't let paintball stuff bother me. I used to play paintball every week, when Duality came out I recognized the paintball mask right away & still enjoyed the film. When I posted the trailer to my film last month, I didn't have one person complain that the character had a paintball mask on. The main character in my film wears a paintball mask & uses a paintball gun at times during the film. (see link in sig) Why, because I still have all my paintball gear, don't want to deface it for use in the film, it still looks cool, is weathered from actually playing painball & not just using it for just a film prop. My CG double even has a paintball mask on, because I wanted to make the CG double look just like I do in costume.

Well, DyeJedi, I think you're overreacting. I practice karate, for example, but I don't feel outraged by the fact that Luke is wearing a karate gi, or a kimono, in A New Hope. I think it looks nice, by the way.

And, really, a LOT of people aren't paintball experts as you are. If I were you I'd simply smile and pay attention to the movie.

Besides, as many have pointed out, we are talking about amateur films here. If Lucas used real world things as props in his multi million dollar movies, I think we can give these guys a break for using a paintball mask in their films.

I'm not really that buffed over it, it may seem that way when I explain my logic, I just wanted to know why everyone used everyday things (for many of us) and expected them to come across as blasters

I'm not huge on paintball guns in movies because you could buy a blaster toy for a fourth the cost but masks are a-okay...as long as they sand out and paint over the logos. I mean they are actually in ways modelled after the stormtrooper and darth vader helmet.
