So I was thinking today, wondering where the term "Liberal Arts" in denoting colleges and their degrees first came from, then suddenly I wondered why nobody had ever thought of starting a new trend, by coining the term "Conservative Arts" and having their colleges and degrees be a new alternative to those of the "Liberal Arts".

    Anyone have any ideas?

It doesn't mean as opposed to conservative, it's more opposed to fine arts.

Liberal arts still means you get to draw naked people, right?

    Probably because that's completely ridiculous.

The liberal arts deserves from the Latin artes liberales--the arts of a free man. It had the connotations of leisurely scholarship (scholes being the Greek word that meant both "leisure" and "school"--it was a refined, cultured pursuit.

Why? Well, if you worked for a living, you couldn't possibly get an education. So we have the liberal arts, whence liberal education--this has nothing to do with the ridiculous political overtones the term has gained in the US since the 1930s, but it refers to an older, original usage. Look up the adjective liberalis in a Latin dictionary--here's an example of some definitions: "honorable; courteous, well bred, gentlemanly; liberal; generous."

It's this latter usage that seems to have morphed over time to mean "left-wing" when it oughtn't mean anything of the sort. Liberality (not "liberalism") is irrespective of political ideology: the most conservative aristocrats of the Roman Senate described themselves as possessing a liberal education, and the staunchest imperialists of the British Empire described themselves as liberals because they felt they were generously extending the benefits of civilization to local subjects.

A liberal--or classical--education is merely one structured on old lines, pioneered in the ancient world and set down in medieval times. A liberal arts college, meanwhile, is a college that has a higher faculty to student ratio, small overall class sizes, and is primarily an educational rather than research institution.

No such dichotomy. The liberal arts refer to a general education for the sake of personal cultivation and growth, and the fine arts refer to a specific area of expertise. They're assuredly different, but they're not opposed. You could just as easily place a technical education as the opposite, but they're just different focuses.

This thread is truly smh worthy

We have dictionaries for a reason

late 14c., translating L. artes liberales ; the seven attainments directed to intellectual enlargement, not immediate practical purpose, and thus deemed worthy of a free man ( liberal in this sense is opposed to servile or mechanical ). They were divided into the trivium -- grammar, logic, rhetoric -- and the quadrivium -- arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy.

    EDIT: or what Jello said.

No, no, no . . . Jello, you silly man. It is impossible for words to change their meaning, and English has always been the real language of all people everywhere. Foreign languages just show up in little clips in thriller shows like "24," to show that the bad guys are talking.

We have already established that there are no "Conservative Arts" because conservatives are not allowed to be professors.

Also, the "arts" part of Liberal Arts most definitely refers to interior decorating and other ways of making things pretty, except for when it means "making things ugly in a way enjoyed by liberals."*

Another important thing to remember is that you can only earn a "Bachelor of Arts" degree if you are an unmarried man. I personally hold a Bachelorette of Arts degree in English Literature, although I would lose this if I were to marry. This is a significant consideration when considering wedlock, a sex change, or updating one's resumé.

Earning a Master of Arts degree means that you get to go up to all the local interior decorators and order them around. This is handy if you need some 70's fake wood paneling stripped out of a sunken den, or if you're just really into using the word "bidding" as a noun in casual conversation.

Becoming a Doctor of Philosophy, Jurisprudence, or Divinity is a somewhat tricky matter. It does allow you to practice medicine upon sick philosophies, jurisprudences, or divinities, but really, how often is that necessary?

I hope I have clarified matters.

    * "Liberal" is of course identical to the United States usage of the term. The idea that Canada or the UK might harbor Liberal Democrats who are nothing at all like liberal Democrats is simply madness.

Actually, ophie, there were conservative arts schools but they were closed down for lack of government funding, and replaced with churches operated through the private sector.

Oh yes, that's right. How silly of me. That's what I get for having A Bachelorette's degree in interior decoration.
