Why should I buy an XL-1S over a GL-2?

What kind of NTSC output do you use? Sure, you can crop it to NTSC settings, but you'd still have to output it to your PAL camera. Or do you also use a PAL tv/vcr? Anyhow, how would you output to an NTSC setup (TV, VCR, etc.)?

After you convert it to 24p, it's a fairly straightforward matter of rendering it to NTSC 29.97 with a 3:2 pulldown.

I equate it to the film practice of developing and watching dailies. Most of the time I'd be content to work with the video exclusively in the computer until final output anyway.

I think that I'll just buy a GL2, an XL1S, and an AG-DVX100... take them all apart.... combine them into one camera...

Then I'll have a super XL6 (Thats what I'll call it)... It will be crazy... Its quality will be Better that film.... Everyone will envy me.

Dorkman: Maybe I misunderstood you, but do you mean you'd just crop it for NTSC, and output it through something like a video card with S-Video? I understand how to crop it to NTSC settings on the computer, but if you're putting it back on the camera, the camera is PAL... unless you have an NTSC camera, as well. Ugh, I wish we had a world standard....

(I probably sound like a completely idiot about cameras and lighting and.. um de-interlation and stuff.)

And here we were being on topic so well... ah well... You'd be surprised what you can BUY instead of bid on at Ebay these days. Some good camera shopping there!

Can't you just film for a couple hours while the sun goes down or up or whatever you want and time remap in AE ?[face_plain]

    Crap.

Um, 80 minutes? Can't you LP or SLP it to two hours?

(My camera right now is Digital8, not miniDV.)

Generally. I do believe that's a feature. But if you want to do a longer time-lapse than 2 hours, it's not an option.

You might be able to pull off switching tapes.

I'd be more worried about hard drive space for all of the captured footage.

    3.61 MB/sec * 60 = 216.6 MB/minute * 60 = 12.69 GB * 2 = 25.38 GB. For one tape.

(Well, I'm not worried about my hard drive space... I have 80 gigs now, and am getting another 200 sometime. :p )

Umm.... I thought it was 660GB, no? Anyhow, some of us have monetary limits.

What about the GL2's fluorite lens? What kind of difference does that make?

    *points at face* confusion.

I was told that w/ the XL-1S I could time lapse an entire day over a very short period of time on like 1 tape...so even though it covered like 24 hours, it wasn't that long on the tape...know what I mean? I'm just wondering if the GL-2 has the same feature. I mean, that way the harddrive space really wouldn't be an issue, right? And yeah, I got an 80 gig myself.

And I'm the newbie here, I don't know jack squat about AE just yet...workin on getting it soon tho, I promise!

    EDIT:

Concerning the Pal XL1SE, if you were to use an external LCD monitor along with the viewfinder would it also need to be a PAL formatted version?

On B&H Photo I've noticed that the Pal version is about $200 cheaper than the NTSC version. Interesting I thought.

The things I like about the Pal camera:

    1. 25fps frame mode which is as close as you're going to get with either version of the XL1

    2. Shutter speed of 1/50, also as close as you're going to get.

    3. 96 more lines of resolution. That's 20% more lines. That part I like the most.

The only hangup I have is that if the Pal version doesn't play well with equipment from the States. The external monitor, my video monitor in my edit bay, etc. And the fact that I'll never export to film and my primary audience will be on the web and on dvd/vhs. I can get around those with the pulldown method so it's not a huge hangup, just the equipment factor. Can anyone expand on that?

I hope I'm not going too far off topic as I think my questions do relate to the discussion in a round about way.

I did a timelapse once. I downloaded anasazi stop motion animator and set it to grab a frame every 50 minutes. A day later I had a cool clip of my room as the day went by. You all should try it just to see what pigs you really are. :D :D

    Okay... to my understanding:

The GL2 has 380,000 effective pixels, both NTSC and PAL. It records a certain resolution and stretches the image down to 720 x 480 (which is 345,600 pixels), this giving higher image quality... seemingly. Like 800 x 475 = 380,000. Yes, it'd probably be the wrong aspect ratio, but disregard that. This is an example. That 800 x 475 is recorded and stretched down to 720 x 480, appearing to have higher image quality.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I've never researched this, but that's how I'd imagine it to work.

Dorkman's pretty much got me convinced that a PAL XL1s is probably the way to go. My questions go with everyone elses on whether or not PAL works all right on U.S. systems. Also, is there a problem with charging the camera batteries with it being a European model?

    I'm waiting for a NTSC XL2. I still don't want PAL.
